Chapter 3
“I'm leaving now. I should be home in an hour and a half but if it’s later I’ll call.” Rachel told Pat. He gave her a final kiss then watched her leave. As soon as the car was out of sight, he grabbed the phone
Rachel could tell something was wrong as soon as she walked through the front door. The usual noise and laughter was missing. She wandered into the house and found everyone in the family room. “Cookie?” Brian’s girlfriend Shannon offered holding up a tray. “No thanks” Rachel said. She had eaten lunch just before coming over. Rachel made herself comfortable on the couch. “So…” she said slowly. “We heard about what happened last night.” Kelly said. She was the oldest of the group. Kelly was Kevin’s girlfriend. Rachel looked down at the floor. “Oh.” she said quietly. “How do I put this lightly?” Melissa asked to no one in particular. “Your boyfriend is a loser.” Danielle the youngest of the group that was dating Nick said. “No he’s not!” Rachel exclaimed. She was shocked at how cruel her friends were being. “Rach, it’s Thursday and you’ve already been to AJ’s twice this week.” Shannon said. “So?” Rachel said. “You only go there when you’re upset.” Danielle said. “Pat’s always drunk and when he’s drunk he treats you like crap.” Kelly said. “That’s not true! He’s not drunk all the time and he treats me well when he isn’t. Besides I love him.” Rachel said defending herself and Pat. Rachel got up to leave. “Goodbye. Call me when you realize that everything you have said to me is foolish,” she said. The door slammed and the others sat there in silence. They couldn’t believe that Rachel could be so dense.
