Next Time

“Haha! I beat you again, Bree!” I said laughing. Bree is my 15 year-old sister. Every Saturday I take her to the basketball court, and after we go to out for lunch. I’m Brogan. I live in New York, and I’m 23.

“Not fair!” said Bree in protest. You’re taller than me!

While she as talking, my eyes drifted over to two guys who had just walked on the court. One was tall, and had blonde hair, the other kind of short in comparison, and had reddish-brown curly hair. The two looked vaguely familiar, but I didn’t remember where, or if I had seen them before.

Meanwhile, the red head caught me staring at him. He smiled, and gave me a little wave, as if he was completely used to people staring at him all the time.

I turned a deep shade of red, and gave him a shy smile. I looked at my sister, and she asked me if I knew them. “No,” I replied, “but they look kinda familiar.

”So, are we going to play again, or what?” Bree asked impatiently. “Yeah, but can we sit down for a while though?” I asked.

We walked over to a bench along the side of the court, and we watched the two guys play. “They’re good,” whispered Bree.

A few minuets later, the blond guy went up to the redhead and said something. The redhead nodded, and walked up to where my sister and I were sitting.

”Hey. My friend and I were wondering if you guys wanted to play a game of two on two?”

I looked at my sister, and she smiled as if to say, ‘Yeah, I know you want to get to know him.’ “We’re in!” I told the guy. “I’m Brogan, and that’s my sister, Bree.” “Hi. I’m Brian, and my friend is Nick. He’s a big doufus.”

”Hey, Rok, I heard that!” Nick said, laughing. I introduced myself to Nick, we started playing.

After they kicked our butts, 21 to 15, Bree and I decided to call it a day. We went over to collect our stuff, and Bree suprized me by saying, “Hey, I got an idea. Why don’t we ask Brian and Nick if they want to go out for lunch with us?” I was surprized, because usually when we go out on Saturdays, it’s usually just us two. She must have noticed my surprize, so she added, “Common. I know you really like him!” I turned red and nodded.

You can probably guess, I blush easily. The slightest thing will set it off, and my face will turn a lovely shade of pink.

”Good idea. I think I might do that,” I told her. I turned around and walked up to Brian. ”Brian?” I said to get his attention. He turned around and faced me.

”Hey, I was wondering…” started Brian, at the same time I started to say, “Did you and Nick want to…”

I smiled, and Brian laughed a shy laugh. Now that I think about it, is was a bit of an awkard moment. “You first,” Brian said, smiling. For the first time, I noticed when he spoke, he had the cutest Kentucky accent.

”Well, I wanted to ask you if you and Nick wanted to go out for lunch with Bree and I.” A large smile lt up Briand’s face. God, that boy’s smile is contagous. “We’d love to,” he said looking at me, while I was grinning like an idiot.

”Do you have a car, or did you guys walk?” I asked them. “We walked,” answered Nick. “Follow me,” I said. “I’ll drive, then.” I led them to my little beat up, used car. I was a little embarased, but Nick and Brian didn’t seem to notice. We all threw our stuff in the trunk, hopped in the car, and drove off.

”, Everyone like Italian?” I asked. I knew Bree would say yes, but I didn’t know about Nick and Brian. They said that would be great so I drove to my favorite little Italian resturant. It was only a few blocks away, so it was a quick, and fairly silent ride. I parked the car, and we went into the resturant. After we decided what to order, I decided to make some conversation, and maybe get to know the guys a little better.

”So, you guys still in school, or what?” I asked. Nick and Brian exchanged glances, and Nick said, “I actully don’t go to school. I have a tutor,” and Brian said “And I’m done school.”

”Cool,” I said. “So, what do you guys do?” Nick started coughing. “Are you alright?” I asked? He nodded, still red from coughing.

”We’re in a band,” Brian said. “Cool. Is it just you two, or are there more of you?” I asked them. “There’s five of us,” replied Brian. “Cool,” I said again. ‘Way to go, Brogan. Wow them with your extensive vocabulary!’ I thought, cringing. “You guys got any cd’s out, anything I’d know?” I realized I was prying a little, but they had my interest now, and I was eager to know more.

”Yeah, actually,” Nick said, speaking for the first time in a while. “You know, the Backstreet Boys? Ring any bells?” he finished, sounding slightly amused.

”Oh yeah! You guys sing that song… you know… what’s it called? I want it that way!” I remembered, sounding triumphant.

”Yeah, that would be us,” said Brian, with that smile I’m beginning to love creaping across his face. Just then, our food came, pretty much putting an end to our conversation.

”I should probably tell you,” Brian whispered loudly, leaning across the table. “This guy can eat to no end!” “Would you shaddup?” Nick said, punching him in the arm playfully.

Over lunch we talked about a lot of nothing. Movies, sports, music, tons of stuff. I learned a lot about them, and some about their band. It was kind of odd, though, because usually I’m pretty shy, and I don’t usually say much when talking to almost total strangers, but it was different this time, and I liked it!

After we had finished, I asked Brian, “Are you guys here for a while? When do you go?” “We’re here until Tuesday, then we’re off to somewhere else,” he replied. “Life never stops when you’re on the road!” he finished with a small chuckle.

A waitress came up, and set the bill on the table. Brian, Nick, and I all reached for it, but I grabbed it first, and said smiling, “This one’s on me. It’s not every day I take two pop superstars out for lunch!”

”Okay,” said Brian, “but next time it’s on me.”

’Hmmmm,’ I thought. ‘Next time. I like the sound of that.’
