Chapter One

~1996~

"Okay, wait. I messed up again." I said as I forgot one of the steps of the cheer.

"Again? Watch me," my friend Desiree said, taking a deep breath and beginning the cheer.

My friend, Desiree, and I were cheerleaders at our high school. We had been friends for two years. I met her because I used to be friends with her older sister, but then she decided she was 'too good' for me.

We practiced the cheer a few more times until practice ended. Desiree and I sat down on the grass and drank from our water bottles.

"Hey, look. It's Joey," she said, pointing to the bleachers.

"Where?" I asked and turned around.

I saw Joey and walked up the bleachers towards him.

"What are you doing here?" I asked.

"Hello! Cheerleaders!" he said and pointed to the field.

"Oh, I see." I laughed and sat down next to him, "Is that the only reason?"

"Why?"

"I was just wondering." I said.

"Oh. Well, I also came to see if you wanted a ride home," he said.

I sighed disappointed, "I can't. Des is coming over."

"That's okay with me, I can give her a ride, too."

We stood up and walked down the bleachers were Desiree was standing. I told her that Joey was giving us a ride. She grabbed her stuff and we left the field and walked into the parking lot to get to his car. When we got there, I got in the front with Joey and Desiree got in the back.

"Wow. Two cheerleaders." Joey laughed as he backed out of the parking lot.

About fifteen minutes later, we pulled into his driveway. Desiree and I climbed out of the car and thanked him for the ride. We walked through the bushes into my yard and up the stairs into my house. My mom wasn't home and my brothers were in the family room playing video games. We went upstairs and into my room. Since Desiree had been over my house lots of times, she almost had my room memorized. She dropped her bag, expecting it to land on the table. We stared at it as it fell to the floor instead.

"Oh yeah. I forgot to tell you that I moved the table." I laughed.

She laughed and sat on my bed. I pulled the chair from my desk over and sat down.

"I can't believe this. I'm a cheerleader and I can't get a date." I said glumly.

"I think you should go out with Joey. He's okay, I guess."

"Yeah, I know. But I don't think he likes me like that." I complained.

"So? Ask him to take you to the dance if he doesn't already have a date." Desiree suggested.

"Do you think he'll say yes?" I asked.

"How am I supposed to know?" she asked.

I shrugged and looked out my window, "What am I supposed to say anyway? I can't MAKE him take me."

"Well, hint that you want him to take you and if all else fails, ask him yourself,"

I slammed my locker shut and started walking down the hall to my 5th period class. I saw Joey standing in front of his locker putting his books away. I ran up to him and tapped him on the shoulder.

"Oh, hey Samantha. What's up?" he asked, turning around.

"I just wanted to ask you if you had a date for the dance yet." I said.

"No." he said and continued to put his books in his locker.

"Me neither."

"Too bad, huh?" he asked.

"Yeah," I agreed, "I wish I had a date though."

"Don't worry, you'll get one." Joey said and patted me on the shoulder.

"Do you have anyone in mind?" I asked.

"Of course I do."

I realized that hinting wasn't helping so I would have to ask him myself.

"Well, if you don't have date by then, maybe you can go with me." I suggested.

"No thanks. I'll find a date by then," he said and went to his next class.

"He said WHAT?!" my friend, Lynn, shrieked.

"He said no." I said, disappointed. I picked up my phone and sat on my bed, "I just won't go to the dance. It's not a big deal anyway."

"Stop denying it. You know you want to go. You'll find a date by then, don't worry," she insisted.

"I guess so. But for some reason I still like him."
