Chapter 6

THAT NIGHT

I entered the after-party room, hand in hand with Alyse. As almost a reflex, Justin and Joey ran to a scantily clad group of girls. Joey took two of them in his arms and began to charm them by telling them he was in a music group. He always used that excuse to get chicks. I often wondered if he even enjoyed singing professionally. Justin was just trying to impress the girls with his voice and dance moves. Somehow it worked for him and off he went with a few girls on the dance floor.

Alyse and I began dancing together on the floor and I let all the bad memories of my past relationship slip away. Only an hour later I was told I had a phone call. I thought it was a little odd that someone would call me here, but then I figured it was my Mom. I hadn't heard from her in a few weeks. I excused myself and went to go take the call. "Hello?" I said to the unknown person on the other line. " Hi, honey! How've ya been?" a familiar voice whispered. It took me a minute but then I recognized the voice. It was Liza, my ex-girlfriend. "Um...why'd you call?" I asked her. I wanted to know after five months of being apart she was talking to me. She paused for a second. "Well, I've realized my mistake JC, I want to start over. It took some time but I found that I love you...." she replied. I wasn't sure or not if she sounded genuine, but still my heart sank. The feelings I had for her came rushing back to me. I didn't respond for what seemed like hours and then I managed to say, " I don't know Liza. I'll have to think about it, OK? I mean you hurt me real bad," I said. She said her good-bye and promised to call tomorrow. I hung up the phone and went back to Alyse. Even though we danced for the rest of the night, my mind was preoccupied. Alyse tried to hide the fact that she knew something was wrong, and I escorted her downstairs. I gave her a parting hug and kiss. I didn't want the night to end because then I'd be left to face my thoughts of Liza and her surprising phone call.
