Chapter 13

December 1, 1996

Dear Diary,

Tomorrow is the day of the dance at Derrick's school. I bought my dress and everything that needed to be done is done. I can't wait. We're going to have soooo much fun! But I do feel guilty for leaving Nick alone on a Friday evening. I'm sure he could manage though. (So excited)

~Nicole Erickson

Nick was amazed as he read on.

Dear Diary,

Yesterday was horrible. I can't believe that Derrick would do that to me! He completely went crazy! You're the only one I can tell. I'd tell Nick, but I don't want to get him involved. Derrick got SOOO drunk. Then, in the car, he turned into someone completely different. I still can't believe what happened. He said he wanted to drive us home, but I said no. Then, Derrick said that he would call his friend to pick us up while I waited in the car. I bet if I knew how to drive, none of this would have happened. I guess I fell asleep in the car because next thing I knew it was 3:00AM. We had left the dance at 11:00PM and the parking lot was empty because the dance was supposed to end at 12:00AM. That's when I saw him holding it..... a..... gun. I asked him what it was for and he told me that it was just for protection. I told him to give me the gun because he was drunk and that he may do something that he would regret. He had said no, but being me I insisted and that's when he got crazy. He told me the truth and that the gun was to really kill me. He said that he really hated me and that the only reason me and him went out was for so he could get popular. He said that he found someone else and that he didn't need me anymore. He said that if I broke up with him, I would probably tell the truth about why we dated and it would ruin his reputation. Then, he told me that the only way to get rid of me was to kill me. I can't believe it. Derrick wanted to murder me. Luckily, at the time, there was this HUGE bang and I managed to get away when he got distracted. As I was running I heard a bang and a bullet hit a pole I was passing by. I ran into to a 24-hour store on the corner and called Nick. Fortunaltly he was home and came to pick me up with no questions. From now on, I promise to never trust a guy ever again. Except Nick, because he's my best friend and he'll never try to kill me.

~Nicole Erickson

Nick leaned back on the chair he was sitting in and closed his eyes.

I can't believe she held all of that inside of her, Nick thought to himself.

He had gone to pick up Nicole on that night. But he didn't ask any questions because she seemed so fragile and he was afraid that he would upset her.

He knew that he couldn't tell anyone what he just found out because if he did then Nicole wouldn't trust him either.

So what was he to do, tell the truth or lose his best friend?
