"Christ", he muttered.
Fortunatly, the phone was next to him so he didn't have to disturb Nicole who was still in his lap.
"Hello?"
"Hi, is this Nicole?"
"No this is Nick Carter. How may I help you?", he asked.
"Um, this is Mrs. Davidson. Derrick's mother. Uh, Nicole went out with my son for 3 years.", she said.
"Oh yeah. Um, can I take a message?", he asked.
"Um...no, that's okay.", she replied.
"Oh ok, um, what keeps you up at this hour anyway?", he asked curiously.
"My son, he was in this accident while coming home and.... and he's in the emergency room now. I talked to him a few minutes ago and he seemed fine.", she replied.
"Oh, at least I'm glad that he's feeling fine.", he said.
Nick heard a voice in the background. Even though he strained to hear what was being said, he heard every word. He figured the person was a doctor. "I'm sorry Mrs. Davidson, but your son Derrick, is dead."
"OH MY GOD! But-but how?" She began to cry and told Nick that she had to go.
Carefully he got up and walked over to the window. I'm sorry, but your son is dead. The voice echoed over and over in his head.
Nicole began to yell and scream. Nick went over to her and tried to put her back to sleep, but she woke up screaming. He put his arms around her and rocked back and forth because she had begun to cry. He said compforting words, but none of it helped. Finally, she calmed down and fell asleep in his arms. Nick bent over and kissed her forehead. Then het got, picked up Nicole, carried her up the stairs, and laid her in her bed. He covered Nicole with a blanket and fell asleep next to her on the floor.
