Betrayal of Trust
Chapter Three
Kevin walked down a few narrow hallways, past rooms that appeared to be offices for employees of the old hotel. He spotted a set of stairs leading down to what he assumed was a basement. He held the flashlight towards the stairs letting the beam of light fall on the old stairs. After looking at them, he thought they looked safe enough to walk on so he started down towards the basement. Once at the bottom of the stairs he found a large door.
"Why did I have to go alone?" He muttered to himself after hearing a creaking noise. Kevin turned the knob on the old door and pushed it open. Surprisingly the door opened easily for him. He shined the flashlight around the room trying to see as much as he could. He walked into the room and stopped when he felt a sudden gust of air.
"This is creepy, I should head back upstairs and wait for the guys." He said to himself as he ran his hands over his arms. Just then his flashlight died. He shook it a few times trying to get the light to work. He turned towards the door where he could see a small amount of light. Before Kevin could take a step towards the door it slammed shut on him leaving him alone in the cold basement.

"Whoa, slow down Nick. You look like you just saw a ghost man." AJ said after Nick had ran into the room behind them.
"Maybe that's cause I did just see a ghost AJ." Nick said in between breaths.
"Right, like there's such a thing as ghosts." Howie said being the rational one.
"There is Howie." Brian said calmly, "We saw one up their before you and AJ showed up."
"So that was what that scream was about?" AJ questioned. Nick nodded in response.
"Where is Kevin?" Nick said looking around, "Shouldn't he have met us here by now?"
~*~*~*~
"Oh just perfect," Kevin mumbled in a sarcastic tone
of voice. Feeling his way
back to where the door was, he stubbed his toe on a
dresser causing him to
curse loudly.
"HEY! NICK? BRIAN? HOWIE?"
After a few moments pulling on and pounding the thick
wooden door, Kevin
realized that no one was out there to hear him and
more importantly, the
door was not going to budge. "Okay, I have to use my
wits and figure out how
to get out of this damned room."
For some unexplainable reason, the flashlight started
to work again, but not
at full potential. A murky brown light shone where it
was cast. Kevin was able
to make out a roll top desk and some file cabinets. In
the corner of the room
was a small bed, pushed up against the wall. He
narrowed his eyes on closer
inspection of the bed. The rest of the room appeared
untouched for
centuries, but this bed looked as if someone had been
sleeping in it only a
few hours before.
Kevin took a few steps closer towards the bed to get a
better look when he
felt a thud on the back of his head. He quickly yelped
and dropped his
flashlight, crumbling to the floor.

"Sh-h-h, did you hear it again?" Nick asked as he held
a hand up in the air.
"Hear what?" AJ asked, an annoyed tone set in his
voice.
A soulful moaning was echoing through the vents in the
old hotel.
Nick’s eyes widened as he looked at AJ. "THAT! THAT
RIGHT THERE!"
"Nicky, calm down," Howie urged, trying to squash out
the fear that was
rising in his own body.
"Dumbass, it’s probably some freakin rat," AJ
remarked, rubbing his hands
up and down his arms.
"I...I don’t know, it sounds like Kevin," Nick gulped
nervously.
"I say we break up and take the basement and work our
way up," Howie
suggested.
"B..b...break up?" Nick croaked.
"Yeah I agree with Nick, I think we should at least
pair up," Brian suggested
just as a crack of lightening added to the tension
among the guys.
"Suit yourself, I’m going with Howie though, you can
babysit dumbass," AJ
stated. "Let’s meet back here in 30 minutes. If you
find anything just yell,
got it?"
"Sounds good," Brian replied. Nick just stood behind
Brian, looking nervously
behind his back every so often.
