Chapter 38
“Why is she passing all those tests?” asked the Guardian of Hell.
“Master, her sprit is strong. Each time she failed, she grew stronger. Remember the last time? She nearly passed, but we managed to pull it off,” said his most trusted minion, Fate.
“Don’t’ remind me of my near failure,” he ordered.
After listening to the sounds of tortured souls for a moment, Fate asked his overlord, “Why must you be after the girl? Has she done harm to you in the past?”
“Do you think I do this for fun, fool?!” Flames spurted from behind of the Guardian. “She insulted my manhood when I was still in the mortal realm. Now I carry this,” he said as he held out a necklace with a piece of gold wire wrapped around a rock. Embedded in the rock was a crystal that illuminated itself with a blood red color. “It’s a remember of what has happened.”
“What did she do exactly?”
“She threw a this rock farther than me. We must make her fail her next test, so she can come back to me. I have been waiting 18 years for her to return and take her place right next to me.”
“I don’t need a bodyguard,” Kay shouted. “I’m perfectly able to take care of myself.”
“Everyone knows you’re my girlfriend, and you aren’t exactly safe from the fans,” AJ yelled.
“None of you guys are.”
“That’s besides the point. I want you to have one. They come in handy sometimes in sticky situations. Ask the rest of the girls.”
Kay calmed down. “I just don’t want people looking at everything I’m doing. It’s almost like having my parents again. I just got my freedom. Why don’t you let me enjoy it?”
AJ peered into her eyes, searchingly. Finding nothing but pain, he said, “Fine. But if there’s anything that happens, even the slightest problem, you’ll be getting ten of them.”
It was the Saturday before Cinco de Mayo when Kay went out for an afternoon jog around the neighborhood. She had found the dress of her prom, but needed to lose at least an inch around her waist, but she knew it was going to be a little hard considering her 145-pound body was quite resistant to losing anything. AJ and the guys had gone to California to do some promotions and interviews. She opted not to go because they would be back the next day. Just as she reached a corner, a black limo with flames painted on the sides pulled up. The door opened and an invisible force pulled her in.
