Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Research Essay

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Service Essay is intended for students to learn about Dr. King by examining the difficulties he faced, the choices he made, and the outcomes of those choices. Students will use Web resources, library books and multimedia to answer essential questions about the value of racial justice, equality, and commitment.

Essay Format

IMPORTANT: Students must clearly understand the meaning of plagiarism (from Plagiarism.org – What is Plagiarism?), how to cite sources, and how to use quotes with critical responses. The consequences for plagiarism are that students will receive a zero for their work, with one opportunity to re-write and turn-in an acceptable essay for partial credit.

 

NOTES: Students must use research notes to answer essential questions for each paragraph. Students must turn-in their notes for credit.

 

ESSAY: Essays must be written in MS Word, with a proper header, indented paragraphs, and complete sentences.

Paragraph 1 – Who was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.? What difficult situations did he face? What problem was Dr. King trying to solve?

Paragraph 2 – What alternatives or choices did Dr. King and his followers have? What were the most important outcomes from Dr. King’s decision to use non-violent protest? How did the U.S. government respond to Dr. King’s decision to use peaceful protest?

Paragraph 3 – What talents did Dr. King display as a leader of the civil rights movement? What do you think Dr. King valued (what was his dream)? What can you do to honor Dr. King’s dream? What sort of commitment will you make to get involved on MLK Day? How will you follow-through on your commitment?

Essay due date: No later than January 31.

Assessment

Each student will be assessed on the following:

Format – Does the student follow the essay format?

Spelling and grammar – Does the student use correct spelling, grammar, and punctuation?

Essential questions, vocabulary and facts – Does the student use information from their Web-based research to answer the essential questions, and are the facts accurate?

Source information - Does the student use quotations with critical responses, and cite sources in a bibliography?

Deadline – Does the student complete his work on time?
