Behavior
Over Time: Character Graph A
follow-up to Come Morning A behavior over time graph is another way
for readers to understand more about characters in a story. Using the story Come Morning, place a number value for
each character based on their knowledge and commitment to become involved in
helping slaves on the Underground Railroad. Mr. Brown has e-mailed each student an
Excel chart to use. Right-click and save the Excel chart to your home
directory. Open the Excel document and begin assigning values for each
character. Level of
Knowledge and Commitment* Knowledge: How
much did the characters know about what their families were doing on the
Underground Railroad? Commitment: How committed were the characters to help
slaves find freedom? Use the following number scale
in the chart below to rate the level of knowledge and commitment for each character:
* Students may substitute other themes in place of
knowledge or commitment. Check the work that Mrs. Teillon’s class has done identifying themes that they
considered to be clear values worth tracing throughout the book. SCALE
Students may consult an old
reading comprehension Web activity that may help them remember chapter by chapter:

When you finish assigning numbers for each character by
chapter, highlight rows 1, 2, 3 and 4 through chapter 15. Use the chart
wizard to create a line graph. Save your graph, copy it, and paste it into
Microsoft Word with a proper header (see example below). Next write a paragraph to
describe the level of knowledge and commitment each character had to help
slaves on the Underground Railroad. Start with a topic sentence something
like this: Freedom Use a passage from the book
with quotes, and note the level of knowledge or commitment. Write about
changes for each character in their knowledge and commitment. Finish your paragraph with a
sentence about whether or not you agree with the character’s level of
commitment to help, and why?
