TEAM ADVANTAGE:

CYCLING FOR VALUE

Based on concepts from the Strategic Innovation course of the

Stanford Strategic Decision and Risk Management program

The VISION – VALUE / CHARACTER EDUCATION symbol at the top of each Character Education exercise is based on the Cycling for Value concept. The symbol has arrows pointing around in a circle to illustrate the importance of the cycle.

VISION represents an idea – in this case Character Education.

VALUE has to do with the importance of the VISION. To discover the importance of the VISION we will consider how Character Education adds value for students and how closely the idea is aligned with our schoolÕs Strategic Plan.

NOTE: The symbol represents a cycle where the VISION is checked for VALUE. During this process people may use the Six Value Medals to make sure the idea is worth the effort, the Good Decision Chain and the Six Thinking Hats to review the quality of the first iteration. The word iteration means ÒÉ a cycle in which a procedure is repeated until the desired result is achieved.Ó

People who wish to improve a VISION (or idea) will check iterations to make any corrections or adjustments necessary for the best quality possible in order to increase the VALUE.

There are a few important points to understand before we begin Cycling for Value.

  1. The cycle may be used to identify the highest-value elements
  2. The cycle may be used to improve the quality our ideas, vision, mission, and plan.
  3. The cycle may use all of the creative ideas and skills in the class.
  4. The cycle may use the Good Decision Chain, Six Hat, and Value Medal thinking.

CYCLING FOR VALUE

GOAL: You will work as a member of a team to make a presentation to ÒThe BoardÓ (your peers.)

Your presentation must include what you believe are the highest-value exercises of the Character Education program, and what quality improvements you recommend for the next iteration.

DIRECTIONS:

PART I: IDENTIFY HIGH-VALUE EXERCISES – USING TORNADO CHARTS

  1. Students will be assigned to work in teams of five or six.
    1. Form a circle with your team.
  2. Think LONG-TERM. Which exercises do you think are high-value lessons for the future?
    1. Each member will use a handout with the CHARACTER EDUCATION EXCERCISES (table 1) to choose the top five exercises they believe have highest-value for improving decision-making and Essential Qualities.
  3. Collect and tally the totals for exercises with the most value.
  4. Ask one member of the team to open Word. Copy and paste the TORNADO CHART (below) into the document.
    1. Type the exercise with the most votes into row #1 on your group Tornado Chart.
    2. Do the same for the next five exercises with the most votes.
    3. SAVE the Tornado Chart! You will need it for your PowerPoint presentation.

We will use class time to learn how to use Tornado Charts to make projections over time.

PART II: IMPROVE THE QUALITY OF EXERCISES

  1. Use all of your skills, creativity, and resources to find ways to improve the highest-value exercises you have identified. In what ways can the exercises reach more students (different grades, and different interests.) Use Word to make a list of your ideas. Narrow your ideas to the best two or three. SAVE your ideas!

PART III: POWERPOINT

  1. Your PowerPoint presentation must have the following:
    1. List of the top six highest-value exercises in the Character Education program.
    2. A Tornado Graph with high-value exercises in order of importance.
    3. Recommendations for improvement to the high-value exercises.
    4. SAVE your PowerPoint presentation.

FINISH LINE:

  1. Complete a self-assessment for this activity.
  2. Share your PowerPoint with the class.
  3. Cooperate as an active listener, and remember what audience participation looks like and sounds like.

TORNADO CHART

One way to identify the highest-value elements and measure what really matters is to use a Tornado Chart. The chart can be used to graphically show which elements have the most value to students, and rank them in order of importance. We will use a Tornado Chart to identify the highest value Character Education exercises and rank them in order of importance.

The Tornado Chart Net Value Estimate (NVE) for a Haverford education is 4 + or SUPER.

Notice there is room for improvement and decline for the NVE. We will use the Tornado Chart (above) to chart the Character Education Exercises rated by the students as having the highest-value for strengthening the decision-making skills and Essential Qualities.
