Just as it looks like out slayer is about to be toast, Angel comes and saves the day. He appears out of the blues and fights with the vampires. After being terribly injured, they flee the scene and go and run to Buffy's house. Buffy takes Angel to the kitchen where she fixes his wound. Buffy's mom then comes in the picture and meets Angel. Minutes later after she fakes Angel leaving her place she takes him upstairs where he spends the night at her place - as a perfect gentlemen, sleeping on the ground the whole night. The next day at school Buffy recaps Giles and the 'slayerets' on last nights episode. Later on she goes home and gives a zip-locked bag to Angel containg vegetables, I guess it's much easier to carry it without mom noticing. He thanks her, and she questions him how he passed his time. On replying that he pretty much read to pass his time, Buffy finds her diary out in the open on her desk. She starts contemplating that 'Angel' is just some girl and that 'dreamy' is just another word she just ...well you get the picture..until Angel tell's her that he didn't read her diary cause all he feels like doing now is kissing her. They end up sharing a passionate kill, but then to her horror, she finds out that he is a vampire.
At home, Angel meets up with Darla. She was his lover and partner in crime hundreds of years ago plus she made Angel. She insults him for spending time with the Slayer and his feeling for her and that even if he doesn't feed off of humans, he is still a vampire. Nothing can change him.
Back at the library, Giles goes throu the watcher diaries and identifies Angel as a 240 year old vampire who came to America 80 years ago living in solemn and never feeding off of humans again. Giles also advises to still be careful because before he came to America, he was a very powerful and bloody ruthless vampire. On taking this advise to shares an in depth detail of what happened at her place the night before and confides her feeling for Angel to Willow. We see in the background Darla hiding and getting jelouse. She decides to plan a visit at Buffy's home posing as a student to help Buffy in History. Buffy's mother, Joyce, let's her in and offers her a little snack meanwhile they wait for Buffy. As she gives her back to Buffy and searches in the fridge for something Darla to munch on, Darla has other ideas; she bites her in the neck. Just then Angel enters and tells Darla to let Joyce go. Darla passes Joyce's lifeless body to him and he get's tempted to bite her, but he doesn't. When Buffy enters, she sees Angel holding her mother and assumingthe worst, she tosses him out of the window and threatens him to never to come to her house again, and that he is no longer invited. This falls into Darla's plan where both Angel and Buffy will fight and hopefully Angel will get enough guts to truly except what he is and kill Buffy.
Buffy enter the bronze cautiosly to avenge what Angel almost did to his mother, while back at the hospital we see Joyce telling Giles that Darla came over to study with Buffy. On hearing this he leaves the Hospital with Willow and Xander in rush to the Bronze and stop Buffy from killing Angel. Back at the Bronze, Buffy aims to hit Angel with her crossbow but misses. He comes up to her and tells her that she can do better than that, and that he deserves to be killed. He explains that he did many terrible things over the course of his life just to be kept alive. From killing his own family to his friends, and his freinds freinds and family, and his soul is haunted every day for all his crimes his commited. He also explains that his soul was restored by an Elder in a gypsy clan as a curse. He comes up to her face to face and offer her a direct hit to his heart and kill him, she passes it and places the crossbow down and offers her neck and tells him to go and take a bite. He stares at her with intense feelings (like he cares too much to kill her), then out of the blue Darla come up with two guns in her hand. She fires her first shot at Angel, then goes after Buffy. Giles, Willow and Xander are up on the top level in the Bronze and yell out that it was Darla that took a bite out of Joyce, and not Angel. Darla goes on chasing Buffy with her two guns when suddlenly Angel impales Darla from behind and she turns to dust. When the Master finds out that Darla, his favorite, has been slain, he goes berserk, but the Anointed One comforts him.
Back at the Bronze, Angel and Buffy agree that despite their strong feelings for each other, it's not realistic for them to pursue any kind of relationship. They kiss goodbye and when Buffy walks away, the imprint of her cross has been seared into Angel's chest.
