Before coming to the world, Bane was condemned to a life of imprisonment due to his father's crime. Leaving alone his very pregnant mother, Bane's father split town so he could escape the penalty of his crimes - spend the rest of his life in jail. In Santa Prisca, the law says that if the father can't fulfill his sentence, then it is obligatory that his son fulfill it. So with that, the government took custody of Bane's mother and her unborn child and locked them both up in a cell. Shortly later, Bane was born. At the age of six, Bane's mother passed away and her body was taken by the ward and under instructions of the ward was to go with him. There Bane was taken to the edge of a cliff where he witnessed the ward throw his mother's body over the cliff and bare witness to her body being devoured by sharks. This was his first and painful lesson about life. That night he had nightmares of a bat coming after him and killing him. First he thought it was just a dream, but as time passed he had the nightmares coming to him ever so often that he believed it was a message to him.

Back in jail, Bane had a friend named Trogg, who took pity on Bane and taught him about life and looked after him till they took him away for an experiment. The experiment would change Bane's life forever. They replaced his blood with venom, which made him invulnerable to toxins and poison and strong. After this other cellmates told Bane about a Batman who was the protector of Gotham. Intrigued about this, he inquired more about the Batman and thought if he defeated him, he could be the ruler of Gotham. He trained himself his whole life to defeat and take over Batman's place in the name of Evil.
