Dick Grayson and Bruce Wayne share a common loss, and it is because of this loss that brought the two men together. Dick Grayson was first to begin with your average Joe. He and his family known as the "Flying Grayson's" were acrobat teams that were performing around the world for the Haly Circus. They stopped by Gotham and perform there for a social charity event. Little did they know that it was to be the last show the "Flying Grayson's" would ever hold. According to the movie: Two-Face was the man responsible behind the death of the "Flying Grayson's". When trying to rescue the people in the circus from a bomb that was set to blow, young Dick pushed the bomb and let it roll down the street where it plunged into the nearby lake as his whole family plunged to their death. DC Comics had a different angle in turning Dick into an orphan. During a show near Gotham City, John and Mary (Dick's Parents), fall to their death after their trapeze snaps. Their death was not an accident, but actually planned by crime boss Zucco. "Boss" Zucco was running a local protection racket and Haly (owner of Haly Circus) refused to pay. Dick overhears the gang members warning Haly of further accidents and makes a vow to avenge his parent's death. Batman overhears this vow and takes young Dick under his wing and protects him and takes him to the Batcave where Dick soon later becomes Batman's crime-fighting partner. Getting the consent of Dick's nearest relative, Bruce Wayne becomes Dick Grayson's legal guardian. He then proceeded to train Dick to the peak of physical and mental perfection. When the time was right, Bruce gave Dick a costume and named him Robin.

In the movie, Robin was born with the help of Alfred Pennyworth. It was Alfred that gave very little encouragement ("little minds need very little encouragement"). Bruce Wayne/Batman had in the end have to accept him as his partner.
