SYNOPSIS

A helicopter is flying over the bridge we were on at the end of part one. It is in Pennsylvania. Burned bodies can be seen everywhere. One of them is the Consortium member that brought Cassandra there. Firefighters, EMT's, police and others converge upon the place, including Mulder. He walks among the dead, searching. He sees a body being put into a body bag, a woman with red hair. He approaches and sees that it is not Scully. Someone calls his name. It's Skinner, who tells him that they found Scully alive, along with about fifty other survivors. They go to the tent where Scully and the other survivors are being treated. She has only minor burns, but her fluids and electrolytes are abnormally depleted. She's in a state of vasogenic shock. The medical technicians load Scully onto a helicopter. Skinner asks Mulder what happened there and Mulder replies, "The answer just got loaded on to that chopper." The helicopter takes off. Jeffrey Spender is now on the scene. He approaches Mulder and asks, "Is she hear? Was she found?" Mulder: "Who?" Skinner: "Agent Spender?" Spender looks at Skinner. "My mother," he says, then walks away." Cut to a medical treatment room. A doctor is working on a patient. "I'm fairly certain it's not a question of dosage. We've administered three intramuscular injections over the past twenty hours since we found her on the roadside," says the doctor. We see the man she is talking to. It's the Well-Manicured Man. "And you've seen no effect?" he asks. Doctor: "No. It doesn't look good.." We now see that the patient is Marita Covarrubias. WMM lifts her eyelid to reveal the black oil swimming around inside her eye. He looks above him at where the other members of the Consortium are watching through some observation windows.

Cut to Scully's hospital room. She wakes up to find Mulder looking down at her. "What time is it?" she asks, propping herself up on her elbows. Mulder laughs and smiles. "What time is it? It's time to thank your lucky stars." Scully: "Why are you laughing?" Mulder: "I'm not laughing at you. I'm just very happy to be standing here talking to you, that's all." Scully: "Mulder, what am I doing here?" He explains the condition she was brought in and tells her that she has some first degree burns and scorching on her hands and face. Scully: "From what?" Mulder: "You don't remember?" Scully looks up and sees the incident on the bridge being reported on TV. Mulder: "Is any of this coming back to you?" Scully: "I was there? Doing what?" Mulder: "I was hoping you were going to answer that question for me." A nurse comes in a tells Mulder that Scully needs her rest. Mulder tells Scully he'll come back later. As he leaves, he gives her a thumbs up for encouragement. In the hall, he is confronted by Jeffrey Spender. Spender tells him that Cassandra wasn't found, only her wheelchair. "What were you doing with her?" he asks. Mulder: "What was I doing with her? What makes you think that we had anything to do with this?" Spender is apparently convinced that Mulder and Scully had something to do with his mother being on the bridge. He refuses to listen to Mulder. "She's my mother. She's not some test subject of your's," he says angrily. Mulder: "Your mother will be found." Spender: "All I want is for you to leave it alone. Is that too much to ask?" Spender walks away.

Cut to the Russian freighter that Krychek brought Dmitri to the U.S. on. Krychek is handcuffed in the same storeroom where is kept the boy. WMM comes up to them. He tells Krychek that the ship is heading back to Russia the next day, and that "there will be quite an enthusiastic homecoming" for Krychek there. Krychek asks if WMM has the boy. WMM explains that Marita took Dmitri. He tells Krychek that his "alliance with her was as misguided as ours., but it appears that she was unaware of the consequences of her deception. You were clever. Infect the boy to insure infection of anyone who tried to learn what he knows; who would cheat you." He tells Krychek that the boy is dead, a victim of the latest killing of abductees. Krychek tells WMM that he knows what the boy saw and what these murders mean. WMM: "You've as much as told me what I need to know." Krychek: "You know nothing." WMM: "If the boy was your trump card, why infect him unless you could also cure him? With a vaccine developed by the Russians, one that works. It would mean that resistance to the alien colonists is now possible." Krychek: "Your dreaming." WMM: "Do you have the vaccine?" Krychek: "You need what I know." WMM: "Do you have the vaccine?!" WMM kicks over the bucket of water he had brought for Krychek, then walks away toward the door. "Give you the means to save Covarrubias, after what she did?" WMM: "The means to save yourself."

Cut to Wiekamp Air Force Base. A spaceship crashes in a field on the base. We see someone dragging a body away from the crash. Armed soldiers arrive and aim their weapons at the crash survivor. It is one of the faceless aliens, as is the body. Cut to Scully's hospital room. She is looking at photos of bodies on the bridge and the nearby dam. She still has no memory of what happened. Mulder tells her that none of the other survivors can remember either and that he found more implants among the victims. He's told no one else. He believes that this explains how Scully was directed to the sight and why she can't remember, and also Cassandra Spender's sensations and abduction "fantasies", and what happened on Skyland Mountain. Scully: "Yeah, but it wouldn't explain why they would want to kill me. And it doesn't explain why I survived." Mulder: "It all comes down to a question, Scully, one that hasn't been answered or, I don't even think, honestly addressed. Who made that chip in you neck? That chip was found in a military research facility. Our government made that chip, implanted it in your neck as part of a secret military project to develop a biochemical weapon, to monitor you immunity or to destroy you like a lab rat if the truth were to be exposed. Your cancer, you cure, everything that is happening to you now--it all points to that chip. The truth I've been searching for? The truth is in you." Scully: "Mulder, when I met you five years ago, you told me your sister had been abducted...by aliens–that that event had marked you so deeply, nothing else mattered. I didn't believe you, but I followed you on nothing more than your faith that the truth was out there–based not on fact, not on science, but on your memories that your sister had been taken from you. Your memories were all that you had." Mulder: "I don't trust those memories now." Scully: "Whether you trust them or not, they've led you here...and me. But I have no memories to trust or distrust. And if you asked me now to follow you again, to stand behind you in what you now believe, without knowing what happened to me out there, without those memories, I can't. I won't" Mulder moves away toward the window. "If I could give you those memories, if I could prove that I was right and that what I believed for so long was wrong...." Scully: "Is that what you really want?"

Cut to the medical facility where Marita is. The Consortium are back in the observation room. They are looking at a photo of the alien that was taken prisoner at the crash sight. The First Elder comments that the sealed eyes and mouth are for protection again the black oil. "What the hell is he?" asks one Consortium member. WMM: "An alien rebel. This is what the boy saw in Russia, the last face the dead saw at Skyland Mountain and, most surely, who killed our man at the dam in Pennsylvania. He is a resistance fighter against the alien colonists. This is what Alex Krychek knew, that a war had begun." First Elder: "What good was that knowledge? Without a vaccine against the black oil, no one can survive." WMM: "We have a vaccine, developed by the Russians, stolen by Krychek, given to me." They all look down through the observation windows. The doctor is preparing to give Marita an injection. WMM: "You see what this means? Resistance is possible. We have the weapons and magic in hand." First Elder: "We don't know the vaccine works." WMM: "It will. And, if it doesn't, we have a new alliance to be made." He looks down at the photo of the alien rebel. First Elder: "Side with the resistance?" Another consortium member: "Suicide." First Elder: "They'll squash us as they do them. We must turn the rebel over." WMM: "But first, wait till we know the vaccine works."

Cut to the office of Dr. Werber. Mulder and Scully are sitting on a couch. The doctor explains to Scully about the hypnotic trance he is going to put her in. He starts the process. At first, nothing happens, then suddenly, Scully vividly begins to remember. She sees the lighted spacecraft hovering above her. Then it moves away. Scully grows very upset and agitated. Her hand is reaching out. Mulder takes it. Scully is remembering the "faceless" aliens and says that they were setting the people on fire. She is standing beside the Consortium man and Cassandra. The man pushes past her, drawing his gun. Then another ship appears overhead. Beams of energy descend from it and incinerate the alien rebels. Then another light comes down and shines upon the people who are still alive. All of the people raise their arms toward the ship. Cassandra begins to float up toward it. She disappears into the light. Because of Scully's agitation, Dr. Werber decides to bring her out of the trance. He has a hard time bringing her out of it. Finally she emerges. Mulder releases her hand. Dr. Werber looks at Mulder, who does not looked pleased. Mulder looks at Scully, and she at him. "You've been here the whole time?" she asks. He nods, then gets up and walks away.

Cut to Skinner's office. He is holding a cassette tape. "I, uh, reviewed the tape of the sessions you requested. I have to say I wasn't prepared for what I heard on this." Scully: "No, Sir, neither was I." Skinner: "Agent Mulder?" Mulder: "I'm familiar with the regression process and Dr. Werber's work. "I've heard hundreds of those types of abduction scenarios." Skinner:"Well, what do you make of this one?" Mulder: "The imagery is startling, but not atypical. Bright lights, weightlessness, stolen memory, lost time, expressed as a close encounter, an abduction, a religious rapture or as a kind of dark night of the soul." Skinner: "Expressed?" Mulder: "Described in an interpretive, into a linear narrative, a, uh, gestalt impression of a subjective, non-linear experience." Skinner:"And your interpretation?" Mulder: "That Agent Scully witnessed a very powerful event, not unlike the one I described on my regression tape–the memory of my sister's abduction." Skinner: "Agent Scully?" Scully: "I've listened to the tape several times, and I don't have a clear recollection of what I hear myself saying, but I also don't see any reason why I'd be saying it." Skinner: "I've got a problem. The problem is I have to head up the investigation into this incident. I don't have the luxury of interpretation. I have to make a report, and that report must state a reason or site a fact or, at least, make an assumption. As I sit here right now, I am unable to do that. I need to know what happened." Mulder: "It was staged." Skinner: "To?" Mulder: "To test a classified military project or to cover it up." Skinner: "Then what I want to know is what happened to Cassandra Spender." Mulder: "Cassandra Spender was taken aboard a military aircraft as part of the staging." Skinner: "Over the past five years I've doubted you, only to be persuaded by the power of your believe in extraterrestrial phenomena. And I'm doubting you now, not because of that belief, but...because extraterrestrial phenomena is, frankly, the more plausible explanation." Mulder, looking disgusted, says, "Then I suggested you put that in your report." He gets up and leaves.

Cut to the medical facility where Marita is. There is no sign that the vaccine is working. WMM says that they must give it time. First Elder: "We must survive first. Survival mean collaboration." WMM: "Turn over the alien rebel and you turn away any chance of resistance." First Elder: "It's already been done." Cut to Mulder's office. Scully walks in to find Jeffrey Spender there. He wants to know about his mother. He tells Scully that he knows she went to Dr. Werber. He figures that she is considering the possibility of alien abduction. "I'm sure you know enough about it. Agent Mulder surely pushed the idea." Scully: "No, actually, Agent Mulder hasn't." Spender: "I find that hard to believe." Scully: "I thought you were here about your mother." Spender: "You went to see her. I'd like to know what you talked about." Scully: "We talked about how she was feeling. We talked about a lot of things." Spender: "You talked about abduction, about her experiences. Did you talk about me?" Scully: "In what way?" Spender: "I have something here that might explain a lot for you." He shows Scully a video tape of a regression session with a young boy. The boy, who is Spender himself, is talking about what he witnessed during one of his mother's abductions. It's what Mulder would describe as a classic alien abduction scenario. The boy describes seeing his mother taken up to the spaceship, then he himself floating up toward it. Spender turns off the TV. Scully: "Is that what you're afraid people are going to find out?" Spender: "Yes, but not because it's true. None of this happened." Scully: "I don't understand." Spender: "I made it up or, I should say, my mom did." Scully: "She told you to say those things?" Spender: "Essentially. She told me that story so many times that I believed it, absolutely. It became a kind of truth. But it was really just a substitute." Scully: "For what?" Spender: "For the fact that my dad had left his family, and it drove my mom insane. Only I was eleven years old and didn't know it." Scully: "Why are you here, Agent Spender? Why did you show this to me?" Spender: "Because I think the process is bogus. Dr. Werber and his whole regression of memory is B.S. It's like having a dream and pretending it's real." Scully: "Well, I think that Dr. Werber would beg to differ." Spender: "He indulged and infantalized my mother, for his own purposes. I think he's dangerous and I think his methods are unsound. And, if you went through it, I'd hope you'd question what came out of it." Scully: "Well, I appreciate your opinion, Agent Spender, but I don't have a mother feeding me abduction stories." Spender: "You got Agent Mulder, don't you? How many times have you heard the stories he's told? How about the one about his own sister?" He turns the TV back on. "Don't let yourself be used."

Cut to Mulder's apartment. Mulder walks in and sees a note lying on the floor. Without turning on the light, he bends over to read it. It says, "Things are looking up." Suddenly someone attacks him and smashes him against some furniture. On the floor, Mulder looks up and see Krychek, who has a gun. "You must be losing it , Mulder. I could beat you with one hand," says Krychek. Mulder: "Isn't that how you like to beat yourself?" Krychek cocks the gun. Mulder: "If those are my last words, I can do better." Krychek: "I'm not here to kill you, Mulder. I'm hear to help you. Mulder: "Gee, thanks." Krychek: "You know, if was not in my best interest, I would just as soon squeeze this trigger." Mulder: "What's stopping you?" Krychek: "Hear this, Agent Mulder. Listen very carefully, because what I am telling you is deadly serious. There is a war raging and, unless you pull your head out of the sand, you and I and about five billion other people are going to go the way of the dinosaur. I'm talking planned invasion, the colonizations of this planet by an extraterrestrial race." Mulder laughs. "I thought you were serious." Krychek: "Kazakhzan, Skyland Mountain, the site in Pennsylvania, they're all alien lighthouses where the colonization will begin, but where a battle is now being waged, a struggle for heaven and earth, where there is one law: fight of die, and one rule: resist or serve." Mulder: "Serve who?" Krychek: "Not who...what." Mulder: "Krychek, you're a murderer, a liar, and a coward. Just because you stick a gun in my chest, I'm supposed to believe you're my friend?" Krychek gets a strange look on his face, an almost sad smile. He leans toward Mulder. ‘Get up," he says. Mulder sits up. Krychek: "I was sent by a man, a man who knows, as I do, that resistance is in our grasp, and in your's. The mass incinerations were strikes by an alien rebellion, to upset plans for occupation. Now one of these rebels is being held captive and, if he dies, so does the resistance." Krychek takes a long look at Mulder--then soundly kisses Mulder on the cheek. He offers the gun to Mulder. Mulder just glares at him, so Krychek drops the gun in Mulder's lap. Mulder puts his hand on the gun and his finger on the trigger, but does not point it at Krychek. Krychek says, in Russian, "Good luck to you, my friend." Then he leaves. Mulder just sits there and watches him go. Cut to the air force base. The alien bounty hunter, complete with normal eyes and mouth, climbs over the perimeter fence and heads across a field.

Cut to Mulder's apartment. Scully comes in to find Mulder sitting on his couch in the dark. She asks what he's doing. "Thinking," he replies. Scully: "Thinking about what?" Mulder: "Oh, the usual: destiny, fate–how to throw a curve ball. The inextricable relationships in our lives that are neither accidental nor somehow in our control either." Scully: "I've just taken a long walk, and I've reconsidered that I may have been wrong about what I believed happened to me." Mulder: "I've been doing some reconsidering of my own." He gets up and hands the note to Scully. On the back is written "Wiekamp Air Force Base". Scully: "What is this?" Mulder: "Maybe an answer...to a question you and I seem to have been destined to ask."

Cut to the base. Mulder and Scully pull up to the guard station, asking to be allowed in. The guard tells them that, due to the nature of the facility and the hazardous chemicals on site, he can only allow pre-cleared civilian and military personnel on the base. A large truck is approaching the gate from the direction of the base. Mulder looks at it and says, "Are you aware that there's been a leak and contamination in one of the lab facilities and that the personnel inside are in need of immediate medical attention?" Guard: "No, Sir, I wasn't." Mulder: "Why don't you go check on that, Son. I'd hate for somebody to die because you were uninformed." The guard goes to the phone in the booth. The truck reaches the gate. Mulder: "Buckle up, Scully." Scully: "Mulder, he's armed and well within his jurisdiction." Mulder looks at the guard. The gate begins to open for the truck. Scully looks at the driver of the truck and recognizes him. The face is that of the Consortium man who was on the bridge. Scully tells Mulder about this. Mulder looks at the guard again. The truck drives past. The guard listens to some orders over the phone, then returns to Mulder's and Scully's car. He looks inside, then looks at the truck and sees Mulder clinging to the back of it. He yells to the guards to stop the truck. He then pulls his gun on Scully and orders her out of the car, saying that she's under arrest. He calls the base and tells them that he has a breach of security and a possible hijacking of a military vehicle.

Cut to the truck. Mulder pulls back the tarp and crawls inside. The truck is empty except for a tall crate with a window at the far end. He approaches the crate and looks in the window. The alien rebel is inside. Suddenly, the truck stops. The driver takes off his gloves and cap. His face changes to that of the bounty hunter. He get out of the cab and head to the back of the truck. When he pulls back the tarp, there's no sign of Mulder. The bounty hunter walks up to the crate. Mulder is hiding behind it, his gun drawn. The bounty hunter looks at the rebel, then pulls out his "alien ice pick thingie". Just then, there is a rumbling, and a bright light passes over the truck. A figure enters the truck and is revealed to be another rebel. He has one of the incinerating rods in his hand. Mulder comes out, points his gun at them, and screams, "Noooo!" He fires the gun.

Blackness. The camera pulls out to reveal the blackness to be the pupil of Marita's eye. There is no sign of the black oil. WMM looks down from the observation room and nods at the doctor. Cut back to the truck. Mulder is standing in the truck, a dazed look and perspiration on his face. Soldiers climb into the truck. Mulder looks back to see that the crate is empty. The soldiers take him out of the truck and put him into a car. Scully is already there. Scully: "What happened?" Mulder puts a hand over his face. "I don't know," he murmurs. Concerned, Scully takes Mulder's hand. She and Mulder share a long look. Then Mulder looks away out the front window.

Cut to the FBI Headquarters and Skinner's office. Jeffrey Spender walks in. Skinner tells him that there is no news about his mother. He hands Spender a file. The case number begins with an X. Skinner: "I appreciate you wanting to keep this discreet. I'll try and do that. But you should know Agent Mulder has opened an x-file on this case. Spender nods and moves to leave. "This hasn't reflected on you in any way, Agent Spender," says Skinner. Spender: "Thank you, Sir." Skinner: "You'll do fine. It seems you have a patron outside this office who thinks highly of you." Spender: "Who's that?" Skinner: "I don't know. Someone working with a high level of influence." A puzzled look on his face, Spender leaves Skinner's office. In the hallway, he is handed a letter in a red envelope. Spender reads the return address. It says, "R.R. #1, North Hatley, Quebec, JOB 2CO, Canada. Spender looks up, an irritated, or perhaps, somewhat angry expression on his face. He puts the letter in his pocket. Cut to the cabin in the forest. The boy again trudges through the snow up to the cabin and knocks on the door. He is carrying a red enveloped letter. The door opens. The boy hands the letter to the man. "Sorry about that, Mister," he says, then walks away. The man is revealed to be none other than our old friend, Cancer Man. He looks down at the letter. It bears a yellow sticker that reads, "Return to sender. No forwarding service available." He looks up from the letter, the expression on he face kind of sad and distant. Fade to black.
