PREVIOUSLY: Peter Parker's friends aren't faring too well. Harry Osborn was forced to take down his own fiancée, Lily Hollister, when he discovered she was secretly the malevolent Menace, and Peter's roommate, Vin Gonzales, is currently in protective custody for exposing an NYPD conspiracy to frame Spider-Man for murder. Finally, Flash Thompson is scheduled home any day from a long tour in Iraq, a tour that has cost him the lower halves of both his legs.

REVIEW: Recently escaped from prison, Spider-Man visits the Night Nurse to get his sutures checked up. The Night Nurse was unaware that he was in jail, as she doesn't get out much. Spidey comments that he thought he was the one without a life. The Night Nurse tells Spidey she can see him sulk even through his full-face mask. Spidey apologizes, claiming to have had a bad day. Seconds later, he corrects himself, telling the Night Nurse that he didn’t have the bad day, but everyone around him did.

[Flashback] Flashing back to earlier that day, Peter Parker is helping Harry Osborn set up an apartment for Flash Thompson, who is coming home later that day. Peter cannot believe how nice the place is but Harry is of the opinion that it is nothing compared to what Flash did. Peter asks Harry how he's been holding up (since finding out his ex-girlfriend, Lily Hollister, was none other than the malevolent Menace). Harry answers that he's still processing a lot of things. He is, however, angry at Spider-Man, as he feels that if it weren't for him, nothing would have happened to Lily, Carlie and/or Vin. Peter tries to argue but Harry just cannot seem to understand why Peter always tries to protect Spider-Man, even after he's seen what he's seen, and after what happened to him personally and to everybody else. Peter apologizes to Harry and tells him he's sorry things didn't work out between him and Lily. Harry tells Peter not to feel sorry, as he did not have anything to do with it. [End of Flashback]

Back in the present, the Night Nurse tells Spider-Man that his friends cannot blame him for the choices they make. Spidey argues that they can and that they are (blaming him). Suddenly, a loud crashing noise is heard coming from the adjacent room. As Spidey and the Night Nurse go to investigate, they come face-to-face with the same two-bit crook in a high-tech suit Spidey fought way back in Amazing Spider-Man #583. The villain is apparently looking for some medicine for an unexplained reason.

[Flashback] At the New York County District Attorney's Office, Vin Gonzales thanks Peter for stopping by to see him. Peter responds that it's no big deal and that he's there to support him. Vin appreciates that and is grateful to Peter for not mentioning how stupid he was to involve himself in such a conspiracy (to pin murders on Spider-Man, that is). Peter answers that he's not there to judge him and believes Vin must have had his reasons for doing what he did. Vin (freely) explains that other guys in the force first approached him after his brief stint in the hospital, following the attack by Kraven's daughter. Apparently, they'd been laying the groundwork to frame Spider-Man for a while and wanted to know if he wanted in. He hated Spider-Man so much after what happened – in Kraven's First Hunt – he made the stupid choice to go along with their plans. Just then, a lady comes out and tells Vin that they are ready for him. Peter wishes Vin good luck, as he disappears into the next room.

As Vin sits down with his attorney, who happens to be his sister, the District Attorney tells him that they have reached an acceptable plea bargain. He goes to jail for six months in return for him testifying against everyone involved in the spider-tracer conspiracy. As well, he must forfeit his badge. Vin's sister argues that is not up to the DA's office. The DA replies that it is and explains that Vin won't want to be on the force after he breaks down the "blue wall" and testifies against his fellow officers. Vin's sister apologizes to him and says that this is how he only does six months in jail. Realizing that he does not have any other choice, Vin agrees to the plea deal. [End of Flashback]

Infuriated, Spider-Man is beating the heck out of his opponent. He cannot believe how stupid the guy is to have decided to break into a medical clinic for superheroes. As the pummels his opponent senselessly, he wonders if Harry was right about Spider-Man destroying the lives of everyone he comes into contact with, like some kind of disease.

[Flashback] Earlier that day, Peter Parker heads over to JFK International Airport to pick up Flash Thompson. He is totally and absolutely shocked when Flash arrives, not on his own two feet, but sitting in a wheelchair, both his legs amputated below the knee. Peter is completely speechless. Flash breaks the awkward silence by joking about his amputations and apologizing to Peter for not telling him about it earlier. Minutes later, the pair is sitting in a cab where, after hearing about what Flash did back in Iraq, Peter tells his friend that what he did was amazingly heroic. Flash responds that it was nothing and that it's what Spider-Man would have done. He goes on explaining that, since high school, Spider-Man has been an inspiration to him. So what he did, he calls it "doing his job", just like Spidey would have done. [End of Flashback]

Back in the present, Spider-Man has his opponent in a chokehold, squeezing hard, constricting his airway. The Night Nurse is screaming at him to stop. He is so angry, so filled with rage, or so he thought. It's not rage that he's feeling...it's guilt. He basically became Spider-Man out of guilt, to fight against the guilt, so the people closest to him wouldn't suffer. Everything is upside down, everything is wrong, he tells himself. And pummeling this D-lister super-villain is going to bring him some satisfaction; at least, that's what Spidey tells himself...but he knows better. He could easily beat that guy so bad his grandchildren would feel it but all he would feel afterwards is guilt. Coming to his senses, so to speak, Spider-Man releases his grip on his opponent and walks away.

The end...for now.

PREVIOUSLY: Their father-son relationship has been a rollercoaster ride for decades. Norman Osborn is a vile manipulator and cruel and hard father, whose showed very little love for his son Harry throughout his entire existence. Despite his father's antics, Harry has always loved him and has kept hope, over the years, that his father would reciprocate that love. That has yet to happen. Though there have been times where it seemed Norman was doing something for his son, out of love, it was only as a platform for attaining his own selfish goals.

REVIEW: The story opens with a younger Norman Osborn teaching his son Harry how to ride a bike. Narrated by Harry, the tale serves as a self-reminder that his father wasn't always a cruel man. He was a real father, the kind of father that would take the afternoon off to teach his son how to ride a two-wheel bike. Unfortunately, for every ounce of goodness that Norman Osborn possesses, there is an equal, sometimes greater, amount of cruelty, of evilness, inside him. Harry wished he had the ability to only remember the great things about his dad and forget about the rest, but it's not possible.

Harry is zooming along the street on his bike when three local boys (see bully) call him over. One of them, the presumed leader, asks Harry if he can try his bike. The naïve boy he is, Harry agrees to let the boy try his bike, knowing full well, the instant the boy touched the bike that he was going to steal it from him. Harry stupidly and naively waved goodbye to the boy, unable to speak, or move, or do anything about it. It was the first time in his life where he felt ashamed, embarrassed, crippled.

When Harry returned home, he tried to make it past his dad without shedding a tear. He succeeded in doing so but his father caught up to him as Harry sat down on his bed, wiping off his tears. Upon finding out from his son that his bike was taken from him, Norman tells Harry to get in the car, as they are going to go fix this.

Minutes later, they locate the boy that took the bike from him. Norman gets out of the car, a baseball bat in hand, and advances toward the three bullies. Two of them manage to get away but the third – coincidently the one that took the bike – is unable to escape. Norman pushes the boy off the bike and to the ground. Terrified, the boy apologizes profusely. It looks as if Norman is about to pummel the boy with the bat but, in an unexpected turn of events, Norman starts to smash the bike into pieces, to the utter amusement of the boy that took it. When he's done tearing the bike apart, Norman nonchalantly asks Harry if he wants to go get some ice cream. Harry utters a barely audible yes.

In the present, a much older Harry Osborn is telling this particular story to the other members of his AA meeting group. He confesses that blaming people in his past for his current condition is not allowed; however, he thinks it's important to look back and use the past as a tool for recovery. Harry goes on saying that he lost someone close to him recently and it has him thinking about all of the nice things in his life that he has ruined or that he lets be ruined because of fear, shame and/or his father. His recovery program (with the AA) tells him that he doesn't need to be that guy anymore, that he has a choice, not to pick up a drink or drugs over it, and he has a plan to move on with his life. Standing up with the other members, they pray that God grant them the serenity to accept the things they cannot change, the courage to change the things they can, and the wisdom to tell the difference.

A few minutes later, Harry is leaving the AA meeting, when he's accosted by none other than Menace (a.k.a. Lily Hollister). She doesn't want him to look up at her and goes on telling him that there is nothing he can do to change that (i.e. her being Menace). Conscious of the fact that his own father has enlisted Lily for some unknown scheme-to-come, Harry warns her that his father has a knack of abandoning his "nice things" after he has no use for them. Harry hopes she’ll realize that before it happens, because when Norman Osborn is through with you, no one gets to have you.

The end...for now.

STORY #3 - LOOSE ENDS

PREVIOUSLY: Months ago, a new Kraven the Hunter - seemingly the late Kraven's 12-year-old daughter - stalked Spider-Man, tracing him to his home, apartment of his alter ego, Peter Parker, and Parker's roommate, police officer Vin Gonzales.

The young Ana Kraven deduced Gonzales, not Parker, as Spider-Man's secret identity, systematically destroying his life, wiping out his life savings and getting him suspended from the police force. She then captured Vin and took him to the villainous Vermin's lair in the New York City sewers. There, she pumped Gonzales up with Mutant Growth Hormone and hunted him for sport.

Meanwhile, Peter Parker, borrowing the costume of fellow crime fighter Daredevil to conceal his identity, traced Kraven and Gonzales, rescuing him from certain death and leaving the young Kraven to fight Vermin, who had returned to his home. The young Kravne returned to her mysterious mother with Vermin, now tamed as a prize. Since then, she has remained in hiding.

REVIEW: The story opens with Peter Parker visiting iVin Gonzales at the Columbia University Medical Centre. Vin was hospitalized there after his altercation with the villainess new female Kraven and Vermin in the bowels of Manhattan. Vin is telling Peter to not defend Spider-Man for what happened to him. Vin feels that if it weren't for Spidey, he would not have been stuck in the hospital, wearing an old lady gown, as he puts it. Peter argues that what he's saying is not entirely true. Vin retorts that Spidey showed up at the hospital just the previous night, at one in the morning, and told him the story about how he tagged him with his costume. If it weren't for that, Kraven would never have thought he was Spider-Man. Peter claims that Spidey probably feels bad about the whole thing. Vin is not too sure about that. He tells Peter that Spidey just can’t swing around, breaking the law over and over, never showing his face, and expect guys like him who don’t wear masks or use innocent folks as human shields to just thank him. Vin adds that his hatred of Spider-Man was nothing compared to that of the "little witch" who put him in his suit and pumped him full of drugs. Peter asks Vin if the girl said anything about why she was hunting down Spider-Man. Vin answers that all he knows is that she had been in the tunnels for quite some time, that she was targeting all of Spidey's friends and had been hunting him down for weeks. Vin tells Peter to be careful when he returns to their apartment, seeing as both Vermin and the girl know where they live now.

In a building somewhere in Manhattan, the latest and youngest offspring of Kraven the Hunter, watches the day unfolds beneath her steady gaze. She hates being trapped up there, like an animal in a cage. Making matters worse is her hatred for common humans, which walk by aimlessly on the grounds down below. Bred to hunt, she has to restrain herself – it's probably better for them that her mother does not allow her to go outside. A noise breaks her train of thought. Turning around, she looks down at her prisoner, the creature known as Vermin. Vermin is uttering some nonsense about the devil being the spider. The girl kicks him across the room, telling him that she should have killed him back in the tunnels. As he continues uttering more nonsense about the devil being the spider, she asks what he means by that. He goes on explaining that Spider-Man was dressed as Daredevil – he remembered his scent from having encountered him before. The girl cannot believe she had the real Spider-Man right there and didn't get a chance to kill him. Realizing that she left compromising information back where they fought each other, in the tunnels, she makes plan to head back there right away.

Across town, Peter Parker coincidently decides to go back in the tunnels to see if he can find any clue as to the whereabouts of the female Kraven. A few strands of web later, Peter, as Spider-Man, makes his way inside the NYC sewer system. After scouring the tunnels for a few minutes, Spidey locates what's left of her lair. He looks around and finds old newspaper clippings of his earlier battles with various super-villains. He also finds pictures of his apartment, as well as the comic book store where she first attacked him. Spidey realizes that Vin was right, that she had been watching him for weeks, perhaps longer. As he continues looking around, he notices something wrong. The female Kraven had an arsenal down there, such as chains and weapons; he wonders where it all went. Just then, he spots what looks like an explosive device on a wall. His spider-sense kicks in. He turns around and comes face-to-face with the female Kraven. Before she can attack, Spidey tells her that he doesn't want to fight her. He simply wants to know who she is and goes on asking if she's Kraven's daughter. She does not answer and proceeds to click on a handheld device that triggers the bomb. The place starts erupting into a multitude of explosions. Spidey swings and crawls away and makes it out of there in one piece...barely. He cannot believe that she killed herself trying to kill him. He is completely shocked.

Twenty minutes later, we find out that the female Kraven did not kill herself after all. She somehow managed to survive. She now has his scent; she can therefore find him. She swears on her father's grave that when the time is right, she will kill him for what he did to her family.

The end...for now.
