Amazing Spider-Man #39 | |
WRITER:  J. Michael Straczynski
PENCILLER: John Romita Jr. COVER BY: Kaare Andrews INKER: Scott Hanna STORY TITLE: Meanwhile... REVIEW:  This issue was part of the Marvel "Nuff Said" event where all issues coming out in May of 2002 had to be word-free; meaning that the creators had to tell a story using visuals only. This issue jumps back and forth between a day in the life of Peter Parker (a.k.a. Spider-Man) and his wife-at-large, Mary-Jane Watson-Parker. ACT 1: It starts with Mary Jane waking up, taking a shower and watching the news on TV; news about none other than Spider-Man. Later that day, she is on the set of a photo shoot. That same night, she is at the World Premiere of a movie. Later that night, she is back at her apartment, getting ready to go to bed. The TV is on. Again, Spider-Man' latest rescue is the hot topic of the day. Mary Jane goes to bed. The hours pass by. She cannot sleep. ACT 2: At the New York Library, Aunt May is reading the online newspaper versions of the Daily Bugle, the New York Herald and the Brooklyn Banner. Later she emails all three publishers. She cancels both her subscriptions to the Daily Bugle and the New York Herald because of their one-sided coverage of Spider-Man and she subscribes to the Brooklyn Banner because of their even-handed coverage of Spider-Man (it should be noted that Aunt May now knows that Peter is in fact Spider-Man). She then writes to the Letterman Show, the Tonight Show, Larry King, Dan Rather and Oprah Winfrey to ask him to consider the idea of doing a show about the lives of such super heroes as Spider-Man. She then crosses a few items off her "To do" List. It is interesting to see that the number 4 thing she wants to have done is to "pick up Zantac and Tucks" and the number 5 thing is to "keep working to forgive Peter". She then ponders for a few minutes and rephrases number 4: "Pick up lots of Zantac and Tucks". ACT 3: Meanwhile, Spider-Man has just saved a father and his son from a burning inferno and after handing them out to the EMS personnel, he swings away and goes back to his apartment. He takes a shower – lost in his thoughts about Mary Jane. Later that night he is having supper with Aunt May. ACT 4: The issue ends with Mary Jane and Peter both sleeping in their respective apartments and Aunt May reading "The psychology of Super Heroes".
