Amazing Spider-Man #50
WRITER:  J. Michael Straczynski
PENCILLER:  John Romita Jr.
COVER BY: J. Scott Campbell
INKER:  Scott Hanna
STORY TITLE: Doomed Affairs
REVIEW:
This issue picks up where Amazing Spider-Man #49 left off: Peter and Mary Jane meet face to face when both their respective planes are delayed at the Denver International Airport because of bad weather (Peter was going to surprise MJ by flying to California and MJ was going to surprise Peter by flying to New York City; somehow they ended up at the exact same airport because of the delay).

ACT 1: They start to have a conversation but it is suddenly interrupted when the one and only Dr. Doom comes walking in followed by two security guards. At the same moment, an individual approaches Dr. Doom and screaming "Free Latveria!" at the top of his lungs, he detonates the bomb strapped to his body.

ACT 2: Having perceived the danger with his spider-sense, Peter barely has enough time to grab Mary Jane, and shove her out of harm's way. As the smoke clears out, Peter notices that one of the guards that were accompanying Dr. Doom is none other than Captain America in disguise. Peter pulls Cap out of the debris and quickly dons his Spider-Man costume. At the same moment a gigantic robot comes crashing through the roof and aims a blaster at the unconscious Dr. Doom. Spider-Man quickly reacts and prevents the robot from killing Doom. A ferocious battle ensues. The robot, far stronger than Spider-Man, manages to grab the latter by the throat and starts strangling him. Suddenly, Captain America's shield comes soaring through the air and decapitates the robot, which releases its grip around Spider-Man's neck.

ACT 3: Now completely trapped within the wreckage, the two super-heroes, aware that there may be more robots on the way, make sure that everybody is safe and sound. Spider-Man approaches Mary Jane, asks her if she is all right, and they continue their conversation. I want bore you with all the details of their discussion but the best part is undoubtedly when Mary Jane tells Peter/Spider-Man that he never introduces her to any of his friends (making reference to Captain America naturally). I thought that was quite hilarious.

ACT 4: Just moments into their conversation, more robots come crashing in. Once again, Spider-Man leaves Mary Jane behind and jumps back into the action. Soon the dust settles, and amongst the debris two super-heroes stand tall, having defeated every single robot. Dr. Doom, who had slowly regained consciousness while they were fighting the robots, walks up to them and thanks them for saving his life. However, he is quickly verbally assaulted by Spider-Man who expresses his disgust for Doom and what he stands for. Doom replies that if they were in Latveria, he would have had Spider-Man killed for such insolence. On that note, rescue teams come crashing through a nearby wall and escort Dr. Doom to another section of the airport.

ACT 5: As the two heroes are about to part ways, Spider-Man asks Captain America if he can introduce him to a friend, a special friend of his (i.e. Mary Jane). Mary Jane, overwhelmed by Captain America's imposing figure, mumbles a few words as she is introduced to him. Cap then turns around and tells Spider-Man that from personal experience the mask may hide the face but does not hide the heart.

ACT 6: As Cap departs Spider-Man/Peter can finally finish his conversation with Mary Jane. However, Mary Jane does not want to talk to Spider-Man, she wants to talk to Peter. Spider-Man drags her behind a large pile of debris and takes off his mask. This is without a doubt the mushiest part of the issue but it is also the best: Mary Jane and Peter get back together.
