Amazing Spider-Man #501 | |
WRITER:  J. Michael Straczynski
PENCILLER: John Romita Jr. COVER BY: Tony Harris INKER: Scott Hanna STORY TITLE: Saturday in the Park with May REVIEW: ACT 1: Aunt May is sitting on a bench in what appears to be a park and is pouring her heart out to somebody, which we can't see. She tells that somebody about how she is coping with the fact that her nephew, Peter Parker (duh!) is actually Spider-Man and how happy she is that Peter and Mary Jane are back together. The story goes to a flashback at this point. Aunt May is walking down a street, heading towards the park, when tons of debris fall down from the roof a nearby building just meters in front of her and other pedestrians. She looks up and sees Spider-Man battling a man in some kind of armored suit. The story goes once again to a flashback where Peter is reading an article in the newspaper about the theft of a mining suit prototype, which allows one man to go deep underground and perform mining operations using a combination of high and low frequency vibrations that can pulverize rocks. Peter's flashback ends but not Aunt May's. ACT 2: The battle rages on throughout the city between Spider-Man and the armored-suited-man whose named is revealed as being Shaker. For hours now, since arriving at the scene of the attempted bank burglary perpetrated by Shaker, Spider-Man has tried to figure out how to stop the latter but hasn't been able to. When their brawl brings them to a local GYM/SPA, Spider-Man finally figures it out. He grabs Shaker and throws him through a wall right into the gym pool. Shaker laughs at Spidey and tells him that his suit is waterproof. However, the vibrations released from his suit turn against him and create continuous tidal waves that hit him over and over again until Spider-Man helps him turn it off and apprehends him. The flashback is now over and the reader is back at the park with Aunt May. ACT 3: Her cell phone rings and she answers it. It's Peter. He invites her to join him and Mary Jane for a dinner and a movie. She accepts and starts walking away. Her location is finally revealed to the reader: she was at the cemetery, at the gravesite of Ben, Mary and Richard Parker. She wishes them good night and leaves. The picture on the last page shows the ghosts of Ben, Mary and Richard looking over their graves at Aunt May.
