Amazing Spider-Man #509 | |
WRITER:  J. Michael Straczynski
PENCILLER: Mike Deodato Jr. COVER BY: Mike Deodato Jr. and Joe Pimentel INKER: Joe Pimentel STORY TITLE: Sins Past - Part One of Six REVIEW:  The first chapter of a five-part story arc, featuring the stunning debut of new regular artist Mike Deodato Jr. (INCREDIBLE HULK) and the introduction of two new characters that will be discussed for years to come! ACT 1: The story opens up with Mary Jane Parker auditioning for an off-Broadway play while her husband Peter waits in the lobby of the auditorium. MJ appears to have a difficult time delivering her performance and is constantly interrupted by one of the producers who tells her to stop "trying to act" and to "just tell the truth". After a second attempt, she nails the audition, when she makes use of her own feelings for Peter to convey her emotions. Peter is ecstatic when he finds out that MJ has been given the part she was auditioning for. Together, they head back to Aunt May’s place to tell her of the good news. ACT 2: They are sitting around the kitchen table talking when the door bell rings. It is the mailman. Aunt May stands up and heads over to the door to get the mail. As she flips through the letters, she suddenly goes white as a ghost at the sight of one of them. She calls up to Peter to come in the living room quickly. Peter thinks May found another spider in the bundle of coupons so he heads unceremoniously into the living room. Aunt May hands the letter over to Peter. Peter is flabbergasted when he reads the return address. It is from the late Gwen Stacy, Peter's first love, and it came from Paris in France. ACT3: Peter sits alone in his old bedroom and begins reading the letter:
I know you were kind of surprised when I took off for Europe so suddenly four months ago, but I needed some time to think things over. I know you're probably thinking, what things? Something's happened Peter. Something I didn't expect. Something I didn't plan for. Something.
God Peter. I don't know what to do, how to tell you this. I'm so afraid that when I tell you, you'll hate me, never want to see me again. I've written this letter six times, but I never seem to find the right words. I tried to call you but your aunt says you're in Canada for the next few weeks on a story for the Bugle and she doesn't have a number for you.
So I’m sending this to you in care of your aunt so you will be sure to get it when you come home, because if I know you, you'll go there first thing. You've always been so good to her. And to me.
For what I'm about to tell you Peter. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. The letter abruptly ends, just as Gwen is about to tell Peter something really important.. ACT 4: A short time later, Peter is standing in the backyard outside May's house. Mary Jane comes over and starts comforting him. She asks him if he is certain that the letter is indeed from Gwen. Peter replies that he has no doubt in his mind that it is from her since he checked her handwriting against some of the letters he still had and it matched. He goes on explaining how he had gone to Montreal (around the time the letter was written) to meet with an attorney there to find out why Doctor Octopus was so interested in Aunt May all of a sudden (back in Amazing Spider-Man #119-120). Right in the middle of it all, Peter, as Spider-Man, had ended up in a battle with the Hulk and had barely gotten out with his skin. Mary Jane is confused as to why Gwen did not tell Peter about the "important thing" when she came back. Peter replies that with what was happening with Harry Osborn (i.e. drug overdose) and the fall of the Osborn's empire, there just wasn't any time. Peter adds that he had a feeling something was bugging Gwen but he just thought she was worried about Harry, like the rest of them. And then...and then she met her demise at the hands of the Green Goblin, Spider-Man's arch nemesis. MJ says that she has heard about the post office finding lost letters written years ago and delivering them years later but has a hard time believing it. Peter acquiesces but tells MJ that there are just a few small problems: "Number One: Gwen never would have sent just that one page, not even by accident. There would have been more. She probably sat up all night writing, finished the letter, addressed the envelope and put it away somewhere while she decided whether or not to send it. Number Two: The stamp on the letter is current. And problem number three is worse than problems One and Two. The postmark on the envelope indicates that it was sent this year." Peter tells MJ that someone is trying to mess with him; not Spider-Man, and that there are some things in his life nobody touches if they want to walk away with their spine intact. One of them is MJ; the other is Gwen. ACT 5: Later that night, back at their apartment, Peter and MJ are lying in bed. MJ is asleep while a very awaken Peter stares at her, pondering about the recent events in his life. A few minutes later, as lightning illuminates their bedroom, Peter is gone. He ends up at the cemetery, visiting Gwen Stacy'’s grave. While there, his spider-sense suddenly goes ballistic. He hears a voice coming from somewhere but is unable to pinpoint its source, nor does he recognize the voice. The person behind the voice is insulted that Peter does not recognize who it is. Peter is unconcerned by that, as he is too busy trying to triangulate in on his position. However, something isn't quite right. The voice is coming from the east but Peter feels someone to the west. And the person to the west feels just like the person to the east. As he ponders about it, he is suddenly tackled from behind and falls to the ground. Peter and his assailant begin rolling down a small hill, the assailant throwing very hard swift punches. At that rate, Peter realizes that he can only take so many punches before he has to resort to revealing his spider-strength. The inevitable happens, Peter uses his spider-strength to defend himself. He slowly begins getting the upper hand when a second assailant (a woman) attacks him from behind and draws first blood. The battle takes an ugly turn soon after, as Peter continues to fight off his attackers. Peter soon discovers that he is no match against the two attackers so, seeing an opportunity to fled – thanks to a passing transport truck – he executes an amazingly huge leap and connects with the truck, which takes him away from the battle. The two assailants, in awe at Peter's amazing abilities, easily connect the dots and realize that Peter has super powers. Whether they realize that he is Spider-Man remains a mystery for now. As the truck drives away, one of the assailant takes off his mask. The man behind the mask strangely ressembles Peter. The female attacker keeps her mask on. To be continued.
