Peter Parker is perusing through a pile of trip brochures, as he wants to get away from the insanity that is the recent election of J. Jonah Jameson as the new mayor of New York City. He cannot believe that while he was gone to the Macroverse with the Fantastic Four for an afternoon, two months passed back on Earth. Even more strange is that someone has been taking care of his and Vin Gonzales' apartment and paying bills, and he has no idea who did that. Realizing that the only cure to his frustration is heading out for a swing as Spider-Man, he does just that.
A dark-haired woman is seen walking into Peter's apartment after he leaves (She could be in her own apartment but it is impossible to tell. There is no clear indication as to where she is). Is she Peter and Vin's mystery house-sitter?
At City Hall, J. Jonah Jameson is hounded by both the press and some of his own staff. Amongst the crowd is reporter Betty Brant of the DB. Betty manages to squeeze by the others and ask triple-J if the rumors that he ran Spider-Man out of town are true. Seeing an opportunity to lambast the wall-crawler and take credit for something he did not have any part in it whatsoever, Jameson claims that his new policies have forced Spidey into hiding. Having said that, he tells the assembled crowd to schedule an appointment through his assistant if they want to talk to him. Said assistant tells Jonah that his four o'clock appointment has arrived and is waiting for him in his office.
Jonah enters his office to find his father, J. Jonah Jameson Sr. standing there. Sr. tells Jonah that he had to make an appointment to see him and that he wished he’d stop avoiding him. Jonah tells his father that he was the one that left when he was young, only to resurface two weeks ago and points out that it was his father that was avoiding him, not the other way around. Sr. admits to deserving that. Jonah sits down and asks his father if he's ready to tell him why he abandoned him and his mother. Sr. answers that he came back to New York to make amends, only to find Jonah dragging the Jameson name through the mud. Jonah argues that he made the Jameson name into something in this town. Not only was he the publisher of the greatest newspaper but he's now mayor; Jonah thinks his father should be proud to have the same name. Sr. retorts that he is not proud of the way his son has been so relentlessly persecuted a man of character like Spider-Man, a personal obsession of his (Jr., not Sr.). Jonah tells his father not to discuss that "wall-crawling criminal" in his office. Sr. argues that Spidey is a good man and that New York City owes him a debt of gratitude for everything he's done over the years. Jonah throws the spider-tracer murders at his father but Sr. points out that Spidey was cleared of all charges. Jonah tries to make another point but his father continues pointing out other good things Spidey has done, such as being an Avenger and a good friend of Captain America, Jonah's own hero. Jonah has no comeback. His father asks why Jonah is afraid to face the facts.
Just then, they hear crunching noises coming from the opened office window. They look in that direction and find Spider-Man, hanging in a web-hammock outside the window, and eating popcorn. Spidey amusingly tells the two Jameson's that he did not mean to interrupt. Jonah is spastic but Spidey reveals that he's not there as a menace or threat; he says hi to triple-J Sr. Jonah cannot believe his own father knows Spider-Man. Spidey reveals that JJJ Sr. saved him from a subway collapse (back in Amazing Spider-Man #579). JJJ Sr. tells Spidey not to be so modest, as it was he that saved them all in the end. Having said that, JJJ Sr. bids his son and Spider-Man goodbye and takes his leave.
Spidey turns to Jonah and extends the olive branch to Jonah, suggesting they put their pasts behind them and focus on making New York City a better place together. Spidey makes it clear that his intentions are genuine, that he really wants this to happen. He puts his hand out and offers a handshake truce. Jonah thinks it's some kind of trick but Spidey reassures him that it's not. Still, Jonah believes the only reason Spidey is doing this is because he's afraid of Jonah's power as the new mayor of NYC. Spidey cannot believe that Jonah is still singing the same old song. What does Jonah do next, do you think? Well, he activates a silent alarm and, seconds later, a SWAT team comes bursting through his office door, opening fire immediately. Dodging the barrage of bullets flying his way, Spidey launches himself out the window and quickly swings away. Jonah comes over to the window and yells at Spidey that he's "finished in this city".
As Spidey swings aimlessly, he makes the decision to become Spider-Man 24/7. In so doing, he hopes to infuriate Jonah even more, making him go crazy, so to speak. Needless to say, Spidey's plan works, as his picture is soon plastered over all of New York City's major newspapers. Frustrated beyond reason, Jonah tells his assistant to have his SWAT team work double-time, if need be, to stop the wall-crawler. The aide points out that the budget is restricted so Jonah tells him to take it out of his own salary. He adds that Spider-Man cannot be everywhere all at once. To add salt to Jonah's wounds, Spidey drops down a basket with a kitten in it outside Jonah’s office window. Picking up the cat, Jonah comments that it cannot last any longer.
A gang of thief has just stolen millions of dollars in heroin from the mob. They are loading their loot onto a small boat, when one of their fellow gangbangers, who had been dragging behind, reveals that he was shot in their earlier exchange with the mob. The others would love to help him out but they are scared of something and/or someone. They tie him up to a nearby wood post and rapidly take their leave. The man screams for them not to leave, but to no avail. Minutes later, a shadowy bird-like figure flies in front of the moon. Terrified, the man begs for his life. But whatever this creature is, it shows him no mercy and descends upon him, seemingly killing him. Could this be the new Vulture that the powers-that-be at Marvel have alluded to? Time will tell.
Spider-Man has been at it for hours, days, but he barely feels tired. He's hungry but not fatigued. He decides to stop by Aunt May's house in Forest Hills, Queens, to clean himself and his costume, and raid her fridge. While there, he hears banging noises coming from Aunt May's room. He goes to investigate and gets the shock of his life when he opens his aunt's bedroom door and finds her in bed with JJJ Sr.
To be continued.
