And my spider-sense is getting nervous – Doctor Octopus tentacled his way back into town. With that new Vulture a few weeks back and my scuffle with Hammerhead, maybe this is the start of a trend. Something’s brewing on the horizon...I can feel it..."
REVIEW:
The story opens with references made to various terrorist attacks that took place in the past few years. Then, the story abruptly switches to an unknown location where a man is strapped to a chair. The man's own voice is heard playing in the background, while someone else proceeds to repeat every single spoken word. This someone else is none other than the Chameleon, practicing to mimic the voice of his prisoner, which was recorded from a phone conversation. The Chameleon, holding some kind of spray gun proceeds to unload its' content in his captive's face. The man passes out almost instantly – his airways obstructed. Minutes later, the Chameleon grabs hold of the rubbery substance that formed on the man's face and peels it off, revealing an exact duplicate of the face. He then covers his blank mask with the copy of the man's face. Before the prisoner can regain consciousness, the Chameleon presses on a button with his foot and the chair carrying the man starts to lower into a vat of acid. Soon, all that remains of the man are his bones. Minutes later, the man is no more and the chair is lifted back into its' normal position.
Across town, in the Diamond District, Spider-Man is busy chasing down the villain known as Slyde, who's just stolen several dollars worth of jewelry. Nabbing a nearby manhole cover with his web, Spidey puts a stop to the thief by slamming the steel cover into his face, causing the villain to fall to the ground. Before Spidey can web him up, Slyde proceeds to reveal himself as an undercover police officer of the NYPD. Just then, other officers, wearing high-tech armors, arrive on the scene and surround Spidey. Without wasting a second, Spidey engages the enemy. Even imbued with spider-like powers, our wall-crawling friend is unable to fight off his assailants. Thankfully, a passing bus provides him with a way to escape the sticky situation, so to speak.
A short time later, Peter Parker arrives at City Hall for his meeting with mayor J. Jonah Jameson, his new employer. Peter enters Jonah's office, welcomed by Jonah's press secretary, Gloria Grant. Unbeknownst to either Peter or Gloria, the Chameleon is disguised as one of Jonah's security officer – for a reason that remains to be explained. Upon seeing Peter, Jonah comments on his lateness for their meeting. Peter retorts by blaming Jonah for being late, as a result of triple-J cutting half the bus routes that Peter would normally use. Just then, the Deputy Mayor of Operations interrupts Jonah's and Peter's squabble and explains that they could use a photographer to take pictures of Jonah inside the new office of emergency management, which is supposed to replace One Police Plaza in the event of a massive terrorist attack. Jonah likes the idea and instructs Gloria to make the necessary arrangements for the Deputy's suggestions to take place. Peter and Gloria leave the office together. On their way out, Peter makes snide remarks about Jonah, prompting Gloria to put Peter in his place, advising him to show Jonah some respect.
Upon leaving City Hall, Peter marches through the nearby park, when his spider-sense suddenly kicks in, warning him of danger. He tries to pinpoint the source of danger but to no avail. He is about to take his leave when the individual dressed as the Statue of Liberty lowers his torch and pricks the back of his neck with a tiny needle hidden inside the flame of his torch. Within seconds, Peter collapses to the ground. Having witnessed Peter passing out on one of the monitors in the command center, security officers call for an ambulance to show up on the scene. Seconds later, an ambulance roars in and Peter is put in the back of it. The men dressed as the Statue of Liberty, revealed to be none other than the Chameleon, climbs onboard the ambulance carrying Peter and closes the door behind him. He then opens up his fake tablet, revealing that he was recording the discussions held in the mayor's office using sophisticated spy-like equipment. His thoughts indicate that he now has everything he needs to carry out his nefarious plan, which has yet to be revealed.
At the Coffee Bean, Harry Osborn is busy mopping the floors when the beautiful Mary Jane Watson walks in. She gives Harry a big hug and mentions that he’s the first one of the old gang she's hooked up with. Harry goes on asking if she's seen Peter. She relates how she saw him at Aunt May’s wedding and how their encounter was very much awkward. She goes on mentioning that she is surprised to see Harry doing all this manual work by himself. Harry answers that he's had a difficult time retaining staff and that he's had other hardships recently. MJ replies that she wants to hear all about it and tells Harry to take her out to a new club in town. Struggling to make ends meet, Harry complains about the cover charge to get in the club. MJ indicates that it's a bargain for good times with old friends. She then makes her way into the manager’s office, discovering that Harry has been sleeping in there.
Elsewhere, Peter Parker is strapped to a chair inside the Chameleon's lair. Using recordings of Peter's voice, the Chameleon practices mimicking it. He seems to recognize Peter's name, but is unable to make the connection. He proceeds to make a mask of Peter's face using the same spray gun mentioned earlier. Once he’s done, he activates the mechanism that lowers the chair into the vat of acid. While an unconscious Peter disappears into the hole that opened in the floor, the Chameleon puts the mask of Peter's face on. Just then, he gets a call on his cell phone – or, rather, on Peter's cell phone; it's MJ. She's calling to tell Peter about Harry's sleeping arrangements. She thinks they should help him out of his funk. Peter agrees, telling MJ to name the place and time and he'll be there. Behind him, the chair that Peter was sitting on is back out from the vat of acid - Peter is gone.
To be continued.
