PREVIOUSLY: The Invasion has begun! Shape-shifting alien Skrulls have infiltrated Earth. Completely undetectable, they have assumed positions in government, the military, and even the super hero community. They possess highly advanced technology, a massive armada of warships, enough soldiers to occupy the planet and a secret weapon – Super-Skrulls, which can imitate the powers of multiple super heroes.

With both Avengers teams confronting a Skrull pod in the Savage Land, New York City is vulnerable to the alien attack. With even Spider-Man, New York’s hometown hero, out of town fighting with his Avengers team mates, who will stand up for the people of New York? Who will protect them in the face of this challenge? Who will stand tall during this Secret Invasion?

REVIEW: The issue opens with Jackpot battling a Super-Skrull atop a taxicab inside which Dexter Bennett, Betty Brant and Vin Gonzales are holding on for dear life as Joe "Robbie" Robertson - one-time street racer – speeds through the New York City streets.

Immediately, the story goes into flashback mode, to the previous night. In some unidentified warehouse, Jackpot is up in the rafters, spying on a group of men seemingly making some shady business deals involving a lot of boxes. Taking pictures of the activities down below, it is revealed she's been investigating Walter Declun's business dealings to prove that he's up to no good. Done with her pictures, she drops from her hiding place and surprises the men, telling them they are all under arrest. Unfazed, the men engage into a fight with her. Minutes later, all the men are incapacitated. Jackpot makes a startling discovery, however, when she looks through the boxes spread out on the floor. What she thought were illegal shipments of various things turn out to be legal shipments of DVD players. Needless to say, she's in a heap of trouble now.

The Lower East Side, earlier that morning, Vin Gonzales knocks on Peter Parker's bedroom door, wondering if he's there. There's no answer so Vin peeks inside the room, apologizing for invading Peter’s privacy and mentioning that rent is due. Peter, however, is absent and Vin thinks it is quite suspicious that, once again, Peter is missing in action the day rent is due.

A short time later, Vin arrives at the Coffee Bean, just off Astor Place, where he runs into Carlie Cooper and Lily Hollister. He asks if they've seen Peter and explains that rent is due. Lily reassures Vin that Peter is not skipping out on the rent, if that's what he's thinking. Just then, Harry Osborn shows up, inquiring about who is skipping out on rent. Carlie – wanting to hide this from Harry – replies for she and Vin that nobody is; Vin reluctantly concurs. He then points out that it's time for him to get to work so he asks Carlie if she wants to walk with him. She agrees and proceeds to ask Lily and Harry what they are up to the rest of the day. Harry jokes that he and Lily will spend the entire day researching what the obscenely rich do to fill their days. He then tells Carlie and Vin they could help them out if they weren't so busy serving and protecting. Laughing, Carlie replies that it sounds wonderful and walks out of the coffee shop with Vin.

On a rooftop somewhere in the city, Jackpot is reading the latest edition of the DB, whose lead story is that of her warehouse raid gone awry. Ticked off that the article is making it seem like she is above the law, she decides to pay a visit to Dexter Bennett at the DB. When she gets there, she barely has a chance to say anything, as Helen Rogers, her Superhuman Registration Act union rep, takes the lead in demanding to speak to Dexter Bennett about his act of libel against her. Rogers is completely infuriated as she walks through the newsroom. DB reporter Betty Brant comes up to her and asks if there is anything she can do to help. Rogers recognizes Betty has the reporter who committed the libel in the first place. Betty defends herself, telling Rogers she spoke with several eyewitnesses and police officers who all confirmed Jackpot's actions. Jackpot tries to explain herself but is interrupted by a staff photographer who keeps flashing his camera in her face. Nearby, a very peeved Joe "Robbie" Robertson tells his former employer – Dexter Bennett – that he doesn't want to be associated in any way with the DB and that he wants his name off of the masthead. or else he'll take legal actions against him. Just then, Dexter Bennett notices Jackpot standing in the newsroom and asks what she is doing there. Rogers comes up to Bennett and accuses him of having a personal vendetta against Jackpot. She then hops on a nearby table and starts naming their terms – the DB's surrender will be the first topic; no quarter will be given and none asked. Fed up with Rogers’ insane tirade, Jackpot speaks up and tells Rogers that had she known the SRA would have sent her a crazy person, she would have just come over to the DB by herself. The staff photographer from earlier happens to take a picture as she speaks. She turns to him and tells/asks him to never do that again; she gives him one heck of a dirty look – the photographer steps back. Still standing atop the table, Rogers tells Jackpot she has control of the situation and that she will not leave until her demands are met. Having remained silent the entire time, Dexter Bennett finally says something; he tells Betty to call the police. Her head buried in her hands, Jackpot cannot believe how badly the day is going.

In Manhattan's Soho District, Harry Osborn and Lily Hollister are walking aimlessly when something in the sky above them catches their attention. In Midtown Manhattan, officers Alan O'Neil and Vin Gonzales are patrolling the streets when they received a call to investigate a 10-50 (Disorderly Person) at the DB. Something in the sky above them also catches their attention. At the DB, this same something has everyone staring out the window. This something is revealed to be none other than a giant Skrull ship, hovering above the Empire State Building.

At ground level, Harry and Lily are in awe of the humongous ship. That feeling quickly dissipates when an explosion tears through the asphalt in front of them and a Super-Skrull confronts them menacingly. A few blocks away, Alan O'Neil and Vin Gonzales are calling for backup when an explosion is seen and heard coming from one of the floors of the DB building, which is right above them. It turns out the explosion occurred at the newsroom level. Thankfully, nobody is critically injured. Getting back to her feet, Jackpot is surprised to see Spider-Man standing on top of a pile of debris. When she approaches him, he grabs her in a chokehold and tells her to tell him where the real Spider-Man is. Jackpot retaliates by kicking him in the genitals and punching him in the face. Nearby, Dexter Bennett wonders why Spider-Man just hit Jackpot. Betty Brant comments that she doesn't think it's Spider-Man. Case in point, as she says that, Spider-Man kicks Jackpot across the room. Cleaning blood off her face, Jackpot suggests they take their leave immediately. Without a second to spare, Joe Robertson leads the evacuation of the building.

While Jackpot has her hands full with the fake Spider-Man, who is revealed to be a Skrull sent over to replace the real Spider-Man, Harry and Lily are running away from a Super-Skrull. They run into a nearby alley, hoping to lose the Super-Skrull chasing them, but they run into another Super-Skrull. They are trapped, with nowhere to run.

Back inside the DB, Jackpot and the fake Spider-Man are going at it. Jackpot seems to be getting the upper hand on the shape-shifter; that is, until he assumes his real form, that of a Super-Skrull, with the powers of six different super heroes.

To be continued.
