HISTORY: Several years ago, Man-to, the Chief of the "Black Feet" ordered his men to train someone to carry on the tradition of selecting a chief for the Black Feet tribe. They were unable to find someone who could outrun a deer, outswim a salmon, and hit a bul's eye using a bow and arrow, which were the qualifications required to become the new tribe's chief. When Dan Lyons, whose father was saved by Man-to, appeared and passed all of those tests, he was given the mantle of the Black Marvel and carried on the tribe’s traditions of "loyalty, honesty, and clean living" as well as righting wrongs wherever they may be found and destroy the enemies of mankind. And so he did.

In Marvels #1, the Black Marvel was shown in action during World War II, along with several other heroes. He also appeared in Captain America #442 as an old man at a Golden Age Heroes Reunion. In the Slinger Series, it was implied that the Black Marvel had failed in the past to save a burning hotel full of people and so he had retired in shame, though still possessing most of his original strength. He apparently became this bitter old mentor to one of the Slingers.
