HISTORY: Tyrone Johnson was born and raised in the slums of South Boston Massachusetts, where he spent most of his childhood. Upon reaching his teens, Tyrone’s best friend died. His death could have been prevented but Tyrone, who had a severe speech impediment, had been unable to say the words that could have saved him. Feeling responsible for the death of his friend, Tyrone had fled to New York City.

Shortly after arriving in New York City, Tyrone met Tandy Bowen, a young woman he saved from a purse-snatcher. Their friendship grew but it took one night to change their lives forever. A pharmaceutical chemist known as Simon Marshall, who worked for the nefarious crime lord Silvermane, had them kidnapped along with several other teenagers, and began testing experimental drugs on them. Nearly everyone died except Tyrone and Tandy, who mysteriously developed super-powers, turning them into Cloak and Dagger.

After acquiring those super-powers, Cloak and Dagger decided to take justice into their own hands and went to war against Silvermane and other drug-dealing associations with mixed results. Around the same time they encountered Spider-Man for the first time and although they initially engaged into battle with him, they soon joined forces and fought side by side against evil in all its forms.

Cloak's power lies inside the hooded cape he wears. Hidden within the folds of his cape is a dark dimension, an immaterial, featureless, and seemingly void that sucks the vitality from anyone foolish enough to enter it. Just like a drug, the cape pushes Cloak to feel a constant desire to fill the terrible void created by the dark dimension. The cape also serves as a teleporting device for Dagger and himself.
