SUMMARY:
In Web of Spider-Man #122, both Peter Parker and Ben Reilly are getting visions of the Jackal, the alter ego of Professor Miles Warren. Ben's vision leads him deep inside the forest, where he comes face-to-face with a Jackal impersonator who claims that all the answers to his questions can be found behind a secret door guarded by a monster called the Guardian. Ben battles the Guardian but is knocked unconscious during the fight. Kaine, who had been watching the fight from nearby, waits to make his move.
In New York, Detective Raven (seen mostly in the other Spider-Man titles investigating the death of his partner at the hands of Kaine) meets with J. Jonah Jameson while Peter Parker continues to have memory flashes of himself waking up inside a cryogenic chamber. Needless to say that these flashbacks are making him doubt that he is the real Spider-Man, though he cannot bring himself to accept that notion. At issue's end, Peter gets a vision of Ben lying unconscious and races to his aid.

SUMMARY:
In Amazing Spider-Man #399, Kaine prepares to make his move when he is confronted by Scrier last seen in Spectacular Spider-Man #217. Kaine is evidently taken aback by his arrival, as it appears that Scrier is aware of Kaine's relationship with Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider. Scrier tells Kaine that he should not fear him...yet.
Peter Parker/Spider-Man finds Ben, just as the Jackal impersonator returns. The impersonator leads them through the previously guarded passage and into the laboratory. The Guardian is in the lab and appears to be in great pain. Blaming the real Jackal for his condition, he collapses. The impersonator proceeds to take off his mask and that of the Guardian, revealing that they are both failed clones of Peter Parker. Suddenly, a voice calls out to the impersonator, telling him not to compare himself to either Ben or Peter, because "they" are his greatest achievements. With that said, the real Jackal steps out of a regeneration chamber, more powerful than ever, and reveals that the Jackal that died years ago, in the now classic Amazing Spider-Man #149 was a clone.
The Jackal tells them that degeneration affects all clones sooner or later. Spider-Man asks the Jackal if that means Ben will die soon and the Jackal replies that he was referring to the both of them. Hearing that, Spider-Man loses it. Ben tries to calm him down but Spider-Man turns his anger towards him. Seeking the truth, Spider-Man asks the Jackal to prove it. The Jackal agrees and proceeds to open another cryogenic chamber. As it opens, the Jackal reveals to them that he's made a mistake and accidentally opened the wrong one. The one he opened contains the real Gwen Stacy.

SUMMARY:
In Spider-Man Volume 1 #56, Spider-Man goes off to talk with Gwen Stacy, while Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider confronts the Jackal, who tells him that he is the real Peter Parker and that he should kill his clone and reclaim his life. While this takes place, Kaine watches from above and Scrier watches above him.
The Jackal and his impersonator attack Ben so Spider-Man comes to his aid. While they battle, the Jackal tells Spidey that he is the real Peter Parker and that Ben is the clone and tells them both that he was lying to Ben moments earlier. Spidey accuses him of lying because he read his journal and spoke with the High Evolutionary. The Jackal comments that the High Evolutionary would have absolutely no purpose in telling him the truth and goes on telling him to go to Gwen, as she is his true love. Gwen approaches him (i.e. Spidey) and wraps her arms around him and she tries to convince him that she is real. But, as she does so, she degenerates right in front of him, to the utter laughter of the maniacal Jackal. Spider-Man and the Scarlet Spider prepare to move in on the Jackal but he manages to flee through an escape door, telling them that the entire building is set to explode and that neither of them is the real Peter Parker; the real Peter Parker is in a chamber somewhere in the building. Spidey and the Scarlet Spider safely make their way out of the building before it explodes but Spidey is angry still, because he wants to know the truth. Ben tells Spidey that it is probably easier just to go on living. At issue’s end, it is revealed that a lone cryogenic pod rests. But what or who is inside it?

SUMMARY:
In Spectacular Spider-Man #222, Kaine rummages through the wreckage of the Jackal's lab and copies pertinent computer files. As he does so, he accidentally triggers the emergence of a genetic pod containing a third Peter Parker. On cue, the Jackal and his little apprentice, Jack, appear and confront Kaine. While Kaine battles the Jackal, Jack makes a duplicate disk of the information Kaine downloaded from the computer. Scrier chooses that moment to show up and interrupt the whole shindig. Kaine uses the opportunity to flee the scene and so does the third Peter Parker.
Making his way across the city, Kaine is tormented with the recent revelation that there is a third Peter Parker. Suddenly, he gets a vision of Mary Jane lying dead on the ground. Several blocks from there, a very much alive Mary Jane is visiting her family doctor who informs her that he's detected a minor anomaly with the baby-to-be and he'd like to schedule some additional tests.
While the Jackal oversees the setting up of his new laboratory, Peter Parker meets with Robbie Robertson at the Daily Bugle to try and score a photo assignment. Robbie is all out but promises to scrounge something up for him. While there, Peter runs into J. Jonah Jameson who informs him that a police detective has been around asking questions about him and Ben Reilly. As these events take place, several miles away to the West (presumably in Utah), a warrant is in the process of being issued for the arrest of whomever killed Detective Raven’s partner.
After leaving the Bugle, Peter is confronted by Kaine, who hands him a copy of the disk he stole from the Jackal's lab and tells him that the files contain proof that he is the real Peter Parker. Kaine disappears as quickly as he showed up but he is there long enough to ruffle Peter's feathers, who is tired of all these mysterious strangers showing up and screwing with him. Peter takes off after Kaine.
As Ben prepares to leave the gym where he is watching Flash Thompson coaching, the Jackal and Jack show up, looking for a fight. Ben ducks out, transforms into the Scarlet Spider, and comes back to confront the Jackal. Several blocks from there, Peter, as Spider-Man, catches up to Kaine and confronts him, demanding to know the truth. Meanwhile, the third Peter Parker, recently released from a genetic pod is heading somewhere, still dazed from being in the pod and trying to remember who he is and what he should be doing.

SUMMARY:
In Web of Spider-Man #123, the issue features two major battles: Spider-Man versus Kaine and the Scarlet Spider versus the Jackal. The Scarlet Spider struggles difficultly into defeating the Jackal but he finally succeeds into overpowering him and taking him into custody. The Jackal is sent to Ravencroft, which is exactly where he had planned to be sent, as there is something there that belongs to him. Jack, the Jackal's apprentice, gives the Scarlet Spider the floppy disk containing information about the real Peter Parker. Upon seeing this, the Jackal snaps his fingers, causing Jack to degenerate right in front of the Scarlet Spider. Seconds before crumbling into dust, Jack tells the Scarlet Spider that his future is now in his hands.
While this takes place, Spider-Man has his hands full with Kaine, who is extraordinarily powerful. The battle goes on for quite a while, until Kaine gets the upper hand and knocks him out. Kaine then disappears into the night.
Meanwhile, at the Forest Hills Hospital, Aunt May awakens from her coma, though she does not answer to any of the doctors. Her thoughts reveal that she wants to see Peter as soon as possible. Meanwhile, in Utah, Detectives Trevayne and Raven are eagerly awaiting the aforementioned warrant to be issued, but it hasn’t come through yet.
At issue's end, Ben finds himself atop the smokestack, where the first confrontation between Spider-Man and him ended. He wonders whether the floppy disk obtained from Jack will reveal any secrets or simply offer more questions. Truly believing himself not to be the real Peter Parker regardless of what is on the disk, Ben throws the disk into the river and swings off into the night, knowing that truly "life is in the living". Elsewhere, the third Peter Parker returns to New York City, still dazed and confused, and wanting to rest before confronting his inevitable destiny.

SUMMARY:
In Amazing Spider-Man #400, Aunt May, having emerged from her coma in Web of Spider-Man #123, returns home to Peter and Mary Jane. Upon seeing Mary Jane, Aunt May intuitively and immediately deduces that she is pregnant and gives them words of advice, à la Uncle Ben.
Ben Reilly visits Peter and they have a heart-to-heart conversation in Aunt May's yard. Ben tells Peter that he is leaving New York because he does not want to ruin his or MJ's life since things seem to be going so well. As Ben leaves the house, his thoughts reveal that he may have been in love with a woman named Janine.
A week later, Peter takes Aunt May atop the Empire State Building, as per her request to get out of the house. Looking out the observation deck, Aunt May asks Peter how it feels to swing over the City and being so free. Peter is taken aback and tries to change the subject but Aunt May tells him that she would have had to be an idiot to not know that he is Spider-Man, especially since they lived under the same roof for so many years. She explains to him that, after Uncle Ben passed away, she could not accept that he was risking his life every day as Spider-Man. But it grew on her and she is now very proud of him and knows Ben would be as well, if he were still alive. Shortly after revealing this, Aunt May collapses, so Peter takes her home. A short time later, after having said her goodbyes to Peter, Mary Jane and Aunt Anna, Aunt May passes away.
Family and friends come to pay their respect to Aunt May in what is one of the most emotionally charged issues of Amazing Spider-Man ever written. A short time after the funeral, at the Parker house, Detectives Trevayne and Raven show up and arrest Peter for first-degree murder.
Trying to figure out what to do to help Peter, Mary Jane thinks about calling Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil, but believes him to be dead. As she prepares to go to the police station, the Scarlet Spider shows up at the house, removes his mask, introduces himself as Ben Reilly, and tells her that the time has come for them to meet face-to-face.

SUMMARY:
In Spider-Man Volume 1 #57, Mary Jane is not at all pleased to see Ben Reilly and accuses him of causing more damage than helping. Though Ben leaves her, he promises to help nonetheless.
Peter is held without bail and is paid a visit from Detective Raven, who informs him that he won’t get away from killing his former partner.
Meanwhile at the Daily Bugle, Robbie Robertson asks J. Jonah Jameson what he is planning to do regarding the Parker story and if he intends to help the Parkers at all. Jonah does not really answer Robbie but it is later revealed that Jonah is privately paying all of Peter's legal fees.
While the third Peter Parker wanders the streets in search of answers, the jailed Peter Parker seeks answers from Mary Jane. He does not understand why he has been arrested for a crime he knows he did not commit. Elsewhere, Detective Raven is starting to come to the realization that he might have arrested the wrong man. While all this takes place, Kaine is continuing to have visions of Mary Jane dying.
The third Peter Parker comes under attack by a street thug but is able to get away when he discovers that he has powers and also remembers Uncle Ben's old adage that "with great power must come great responsibility”".
While walking along a street, Mary Jane is confronted by Judas Traveller. Traveller wants to understand Spider-Man through the eyes of the woman who loves him. Thankfully for her, the Scarlet Spider had been following her so he drops to protect her. Though Traveller is excited to meet Ben again, the timing could not be any worse. Snapping his fingers, Traveller causes the street to explode and buildings to collapse, which preoccupies the Scarlet Spider. Traveller prepares to leave with Mary Jane in tow but Ben grabs Traveller's wrist before he can escape. Realizing that Ben will not give up that easily, Traveller releases Mary Jane and tells Ben that "Soon, very soon…you, Peter, and I will sit down together and get to know all about one another". He then disappears. Ben apologizes to MJ for intruding and she tells him that she is willing to try and talk to him.
At issue's end, Kaine visits Detective Raven and tells him that he has arrested the wrong man. Raven replies that all evidence points to Peter Parker so Kaine puts his hands on Raven's face and gives him a non-lethal mark similar to that found on his other victims. He then proceeds to tell Raven to take a good look in the mirror and think about the evidence some more.
Meanwhile at Ravencroft, the Jackal contemplates the most recent developments and ponders that he could not have planned it better...or did he?

He then hacks into Dr. Kafka’'s confidential computer files with the intention of learning why a former associate of his recently evidenced an interest in Ravencroft. He pulls out the file of Malcolm McBride, the second Carrion (McBride, a former student of Professor Miles Warren, became Carrion in Spectacular Spider-Man #149 and later lost his power when Shriek absorbed them in Amazing Spider-Man #393). It seems that he's found exactly what he was looking for. The Jackal makes his way to Shriek's cell, attacks her, and extracts the Carrion virus out of her. After killing a few guards who became aware of the situation, he makes his way out of the building with no one any wiser.
At the Parker apartment, Mary Jane Parker and Ben Reilly have a heart-to-heart conversation. Ben comments to MJ that she should get the baby tested as soon as possible (it was revealed that the baby may have genetic damage) and suggests a doctor-friend of his who specializes in genetics: his name - Seward Trainer. Ben earns her trust.
While the above events take place, Peter Parker, who is imprisoned, contemplates breaking out of prison. He quickly realizes that, in doing so, he would jeopardize the lives of Mary Jane and their unborn child; thus he decides to stay put for now.
Elsewhere, the third Peter Parker, who emerged from a regeneration pod in Spectacular Spider-Man #222, is roaming the streets of New York in search of answers about his identity and his purpose. Unbeknownst to him, the enigmatic Kaine watches his every step. And so does the mysterious Scrier.

SUMMARY:
In Amazing Spider-Man #401, the story opens with Mary Jane coming face-to-face with the third Peter Parker. She does not know if this Peter Parker is her husband or Ben Reilly. The third Parker explains that he is neither and tells her that he has been locked away for the past five years while an impostor has stolen his life. The mysterious Kaine, who was last seen in the sewers, shows up on the scene and warns MJ about the third Parker. A battle ensues between Kaine and the third Parker, creating an opportunity for MJ to get away.
Moments later, MJ calls Ben and gives him a rundown of the latest developments. While this takes place, the jailed Peter Parker is visited by one of Judas Traveller's associates, who lets him know that MJ is in danger. Wanting to protect his wife no matter what, Peter decides to breakout, regardless of the fact that it could damage his reputation and make him look guilty should he get caught. He manages to make his way out of his cell undetected and, as he stands outside the prison walls, Traveller shows up and offers to help by putting an illusion of Peter Parker in his cell, while he goes out to save MJ. With Peter Parker gone, Scrier appears and questions Traveller's fascination with him.
Meanwhile, at the Parker home, MJ has bought herself a gun for protection, mainly because it appears that there are even more characters that know Peter's secret identity; therefore putting her life in jeopardy. She is taken aback when she runs into Spider-Man in the house, especially when he reveals himself to be the third Parker. Mary Jane warns him to stay away as he draws near. She fires the gun and misses him, and the force of the blast causes her to lose control. On cue, Kaine appears to take out the third Parker. He contemplates killing him but a noise coming from upstairs stops him in his tracks. He grabs hold of MJ and quickly leaves, heading towards his secret underground hideout. The noise Kaine had heard turns out to be the Scarlet Spider entering the Parker home through the rooftop skylight. Scarlet Spider wonders what Peter is doing home – it's actually the third Parker but he doesn't know that yet – just as the jailed Peter who escaped from prison enters the home and all three come face-to-face.

SUMMARY:
In Spider-Man Volume 1 #58, the story opens up with the tree Peter Parker facing each other and trying to make sense of all the confusion. Ben Reilly/Scarlet Spider comments that he is certain that he – himself – is not the real Peter Parker. He turns to the third Parker and asks what happened. Injured from his battle with Kaine, the third Parker passes out. Ben turns to (the escaped) Peter and asks what he is doing out of prison. Peter reveals that he is going to look for Mary Jane and, on that note, he grabs the gloves and mask of his old black costume and a pair of spare web-shooters and he takes off. Ben goes to take care of the third Parker but the latter has disappeared, in his Spider-Man costume.
A short time later, Peter, wearing the old black costume, comes to rest on a rooftop, waiting for some kind of sign from MJ. He is accompanied by Ben, who offers to help, knowing full well that Peter will need all the help he can get to take on the mysterious Kaine. Meanwhile at Kaine's secret hideout, MJ tries to get answers from Kaine but to no avail. She reaches insider her pocket and pulls out a spider-tracer designed to emit high frequency waves to be used in the event of an emergency. She activates it and seconds later, Peter receives the signal and begins tracking its source to find her. As he takes off from the rooftop, he warns Ben to stay out of it. Elsewhere, the third Peter Parker, wearing a Spider-Man costume, is resolute not to let the other two get the better of him (he believes himself to be the real Peter Parker and the other two to be fakes).
Peter and Ben follow the spider-tracer signal, which leads them into the sewers. Ben tells Peter that he will go in first to distract Kaine while he – Peter – takes care of rescuing MJ. As they prepare to make their move, the third Peter Parker appears and tells them that he will find MJ and kill whoever took her. He suggests that they leave him and MJ alone (again because he believes himself to be the real Peter Parker).
Meanwhile, MJ is on the run from Kaine, who seems to want to carry out with killing her so as to fulfill his visions of her death. Just then, Peter, Ben and the third Peter Parker show up and simultaneously lunge at Kaine. Confused as to who the real Peter Parker is, MJ tries to get away. Ben continues the assault on Kaine, while Peter goes after MJ, with the third Peter Parker in tow. The third Peter Parker starts to lose it and he screams at them that he is the real Peter Parker and that he will kill everybody else. Peter and MJ are about to turn around and escape when Kaine comes in between them and the only exit.

SUMMARY:
In Spectacular Spider-Man #224, the third Peter Parker suddenly starts to go through some kind of genetic transmutation that causes his face and body to violently spasm out of control. As Peter and Mary Jane Parker wonder what is happening to him, Kaine explains that the third Peter Parker is a killing machine genetically engineered by the Jackal with the sole purpose of destroying them. He suggests that they ought to escape while he takes care of the third Peter Parker, just as he did with the Scarlet Spider (a.k.a. Ben Reilly). On cue, the Scarlet Spider comes to and attacks Kaine. Peter and MJ use the distraction to escape, though Peter is reluctant to desert Ben.
While Kaine and Ben reluctantly join forces against the third Peter Parker, MJ and Peter make it back to the surface, where MJ gives Peter her blessing to go back into the sewers to help Ben. As she takes off, Peter readies himself to head back in. Just then, Kaine, Ben and the third Peter Parker, who now has the ability to morph his body at will, come crashing through the pavement. Ben, Peter and Kaine join forces to try and take down the third Peter Parker, who appears to not give a damn if innocent lives are lost. Prepared to do what neither Peter or Ben would do, Kaine grabs hold of a nearby car above his head and hurls it towards the third Peter Parker, who was just preparing to throw a nearby propane truck at them. The impact is disastrous, as the propane truck erupts in a giant ball of fire, seemingly killing the third Peter Parker. As Peter wonders what happened to Kaine and Ben, Kaine appears through the flames and stares at him, as if deliberately trying to taunt him; he then disappears back into the flames. Peter continues to look around for Ben and finally finds him, buried underneath a pile of rubble. As Peter helps him out of wreckage, Ben suggests they go in pursuit of Kaine. Peter lashes out at him (verbally) because he has to go back to prison for a murder he believes him responsible for. Ben argues that he is innocent and, as proof, offers to trade places with Peter because he trusts him to do everything in his power to prove his innocence. While this takes place, Kaine watches on. At issue's end, Ben goes to prison to take Peter's place, while Peter returns home to MJ. As Ben sneaks back inside the prison, Scrier and Judas Traveller watch on and it appears that they had anticipated the substitution.

The Hobgoblin is soon rescued when his fellow super-villains arrive on the scene, though none of them are able to take Kaine down. In comes Peter, as the Scarlet Spider, who jumps in the mêlée. The battle eventually ends and everyone escapes relatively unscathed. Peter makes the decision to help Ben no matter what, which is why he must find Kaine before he can become a threat to him and MJ.
Speaking of MJ, she receives a call from Dr. Seward Trainer, asking that she come over to his lab to go over the genetic tests they took earlier. She meets with him and whatever it is that he tells her, she quickly runs away, seemingly worried about something.
Later that same night, the mysterious Scrier appears at the scene of the fight that occurred between Peter, Ben, Kaine and the third Peter Parker. There, he finds a pile of goo with shreds of a Spider-Man costume in it. Scrier grabs it, believing that it may be of some use down the road.
At issue’'s end, MJ appears at Felicia Hardy's apartment, as she desperately needs someone to talk to.

SUMMARY:
In Web of Spider-Man #125, Peter Parker, as the Scarlet Spider searches the Daily Bugle archives for anything about the Jackal (a.k.a. Professor Miles Warren) that will help clearing up his name. He does not find much, except for an address. He heads over there and starts snooping around the house. As he does so, he is caught right in the act by the Gwen Stacy clone, who thinks he is a burglar. Peter takes his mask off, thinking she will recognize him, but she lashes out at him. Professor Warren steps out of the shadows and uses a tazer on him.
When Peter comes back to, Warren and the Gwen Stacy clone are both gone. As he searches the house, he finds further information supporting the theory that a woman named Joyce Delaney (see Spectacular Spider-Man #149) was in fact genetically altered to look like Gwen Stacy. He also discovers that Warren knew that he and Gwen are only clones and also finds out that he was working on a cure for the clone degeneration. As the Scarlet Spider, Peter swings off in search of Professor Warren and the Gwen Stacy clone.
A car carrying Professor Warren and the Gwen Stacy clone is crossing the George Washington Bridge, the infamous bridge where the original Gwen Stacy met her demise at the hands of the Green Goblin. The car suddenly crashes, almost tumbling into the water down below. The new Green Goblin (later revealed to be Phil Urich, nephew of Daily Bugle reporter Ben Urich) swoops in and rescues Gwen, though it looks like he is kidnapping her. He transports her to the top of one of the bridge's pedestals where he drops her off. Warren starts shooting at the Goblin and causes Gwen to lose her balance and fall off the pedestal. Thankfully, the Scarlet Spider arrives on the scene and rescues her. After getting her to safety, he goes to check on Professor Warren, only to find that he's degenerated and the Green Goblin has gotten away. In the ensuing confusion, Gwen leaves.

SUMMARY:
In Spider-Man Volume 1 #59, Peter Parker tries to find his wife, Mary Jane amongst the ruins of what used to be New York City. Judas Traveller tells Peter that he, MJ and their child all survived, but at the cost of everything and everyone else, which could have been prevented. He then proceeds to bring Peter back to the present where he explains to him that his Host are in the process of sabotaging an experimental Geothermal Heating Station, which will result in an explosion that will level the entire city. Traveller cannot stop them from committing this anis act, as they are part of his experiments to understand the true nature of evil and, in turn, discover the true nature of all that is good. Traveller vows to protect Mary Jane and her unborn child, even if he fails; therefore, if all Peter wants is the safety of his wife and child, then he does nothing. Peter replies that he wants to talk to Mary Jane before making up his mind. While all this takes place, Detective Jacob Raven privately meets with Detective Conner Trevayne to enlist him in helping him prove Peter Parker's innocence.
While Peter visits Mary Jane, Traveller is paid a visit from Scrier, who warns him about straining the limits of his powers. This infuriates Traveller who tells Scrier that, though they have been allies and confidants to each other for hundreds of years, he should never presume to be his equal. Scrier replies that he never would.
After leaving MJ and promising that things will be okay, Peter, as the Scarlet Spider heads over to the Geothermal Heating Station and confronts the Host. He manages to stop them from sabotaging the station, but something else has them all worried. A time vortex has been created, which will collapse on itself in a wave of destruction greater than what they had hoped to accomplish by sabotaging the station. Scrier tells Traveller that the time vortex has been caused by Traveller toying with the space-time continuum and reveals that the reason for the future destruction of New York City is not Peter Parker's fault, but his all along (i.e. Traveller).
The vortex is starting to close in on Traveller, which it originated from. Scrier reveals that Peter and his family will remain safe, as they are protected by the last of Traveller's powers. However, the city will be destroyed and Traveller will die. As the vortex tries to engulf Traveller, the Scarlet Spider (i.e. Peter) reaches in and grabs him out of the vortex, saving his life. As Scrier claims the unconscious body of his ally, he tells Peter that Traveller will never be satisfied until he can completely understand him. Peter accepts that and goes back to his wife and holds her close as Scrier and Traveller disappear.

SUMMARY:
In Spectacular Spider-Man #225, Peter Parker, as the Scarlet Spider, swings off into the Manhattan skies in search of Kaine whom he believes is responsible for the crimes that he has been accused of committing. He is also on the lookout for the Jackal, who recently escaped from Ravencroft, as well as the new Green Goblin (who recently surfaced in Web of Spider-Man #125) and the clone of Gwen Stacy who also recently resurfaced in his life. In his secret hideout, the Jackal is furious with the recent appearance of a new Green Goblin. The Jackal fears that this new goblin will foil what he has planned to ruin the life of Peter Parker.
Peter stops by his apartment and finds Mary Jane in the process of sewing a new Spider-Man costume for him, because he's grown tired of wearing Ben's. MJ tries to convince Peter to stay home so they can talk about the baby, rather than him obsessing over Kaine, Ben Reilly and the Jackal. Peter realizes that he's neglected her and promises to talk about it soon, as he needs more time to deal with everything. When they overhear a story about another homeless man set ablaze by the mysterious Firefist, they know Peter needs to check it out, as Spider-Man. As MJ sits alone in the apartment, she wished Aunt May were still alive so she could talk to her. She then realizes that perhaps she could talk to Ben.
The new Green Goblin also wants to investigate the most recent murder so he decides to take his glider out for a spin. As he searches through dark alleyways for Firefist, he is confronted by Spider-Man, who is not pleased to see that someone else has taken over the guise of the Green Goblin. The Goblin pleads his case, claiming that he is one of the good guys, but Spidey attacks anyways. As they battle, Spidey gets the strange feeling that his opponent is purposely holding back and wonders why. His thoughts are interrupted when he takes notice that the deadly Firefist is attacking another homeless man. While all this takes place, the Jackal watches on.
MJ goes to prison to visit Ben and talk about the possibility that her unborn child might have a genetic abnormality due to Peter's radioactive blood. Ben tries his best to alleviate her fears and recommends that she wait until Dr. Seward Trainer gives her the results of his tests before passing judgment. Ben vows to be there for her no matter what happens.
Spidey and the Green Goblin reluctantly join forces to save the homeless man that Firefist is about to kill. While the Green Goblin swoops down and saves the bum, Spidey engages into battle with Firefist. After dropping the homeless man off to safety, the Green Goblin returns to aid the wall-crawler, unaware that the Jackal is watching him from a distance and has deduced that whoever is behind the mask is not an Osborn. After fighting valiantly, Spidey and the Green Goblin manage to defeat Firefist. Before Spidey can catch him, the Green Goblin takes off into the night, vowing to fight the good fight and become a superhero. After delivering Firefist to the authorities, Spidey swings off into the night and heads back home, where he intends to have a long awaited heart-to-heart talk with MJ about their baby. Unbeknownst to him, the Jackal continues watching and, after a while, returns to his laboratory where he is greeted by another Peter Parker.

SUMMARY:
In Web of Spider-Man #126, Spider-Man searches the city for Kaine, whom he believes holds the key to proving Peter Parker's innocence. Kaine finds him first and is furious with Peter for getting involved with things that do not concern him. Peter argues that being framed for murder is enough of a reason to get involve. Kaine retorts that he was trying to frame Ben Reilly for murder, not him. He adds that, by allying himself with Ben, he – Peter – became entangled in the whole thing.
The trial of Peter Parker begins with the prosecution introducing some pretty convincing evidence of Peter's involvement in the murder. Ben, who is impersonating Peter, hopes that Peter will find a way to prove that Kaine is the real murderer.
Meanwhile, Kaine lets Peter know that he feels no guilt for letting Ben Reilly take the blame for the murder, no matter what name he goes by. Kaine and Spider-Man battle it out to try and settle this once and for all. Though Kaine is way more powerful than him, Spidey does not give up.
Elsewhere, Detective Raven and Stunner catch wind of a report about Spider-Man and Kaine fighting each other. They head over to the scene of the battle to try and capture Kaine, whom they also believe to hold the key to prove Peter Parker's innocence. While this takes place, the battle rages on between Spider-Man and Kaine. Spidey garners all his strength to try and stop Kaine. He has no idea what happened between Kaine and Ben to cause Kaine to hate Ben so much. Nonetheless, Spidey vows to bring Kaine to justice and set Ben free.
Detective Raven and Stunner arrive on the scene of the Spider-Man/Kaine battle. Stunner prepares to jump in the mêlée but before she or Raven can do anything, Judas Traveller appears and teleports both Kaine and Spidey away from the area.

SUMMARY:
In Amazing Spider-Man #403, while Ben Reilly impersonates Peter Parker, who is on trial for murder, Spider-Man faces a trial of his own. His trial is presided over by Judas Traveller, while Carnage handles the prosecution and Kaine, John Jameson and Dr. Kafka are in charge of his defense. The jury is made up of Ravencroft inmates. The objective of the trial is to determine if Spider-Man, by his very existence, is responsible for the creation of these super-villains and to determine if his death would somehow "cure" them. Infuriated, Kaine attacks Traveller, calling him "Scrier's Man". Though unfazed by Kaine's attack, Traveller does not accept being called that.
Meanwhile, at the trial of Peter Parker, Mary Jane is on the witness stand. The prosecution bombards her with questions about Peter's frequent absence and asks her where he was a few years ago when he went missing and no one knew where he was. MJ knows where he was – he was buried alive by Kraven the Hunter – but she cannot tell them, as it would reveal that he lives a double life as Spider-Man.
Back at Spider-Man's trial, Carnage blames Spider-Man for his existence because it was Spider-Man that brought the symbiote that transformed Cletus Kasady to Earth. Kaine cross-examines Carnage by attacking him. They battle it out for a while until Traveller puts an end to it. Spidey starts to feel that, though Kaine has committed anis crimes, there seems to be something beneath the darkness that surrounds him. Carnage's next witness is Malcolm McBride, also know as Carrion. Carnage asks McBride why he experimented with Professor Warren's Carrion virus in the first place. Before McBride can answer, Carnage suggests that perhaps he was jealous of the success of another of Warren's pupil and, as such, he became irrational and started experimenting with the virus. Carnage asks who the student was, to which McBride replies that his name was "Peter Parker". With that, Carnage moves towards Spider-Man and unmasks him, revealing that Spider-Man and Peter Parker are on and the same. He then claims that, no matter what his identity is, he destroys everything and everyone close to him.
Furious that his identity is once again compromised, Spidey breaks free of his shackles and confronts Traveller. Spidey offers to give himself up to Traveller, as long as he is allow to bring Kaine to justice first so as to clear Peter Parker's name and save Ben Reilly's life. Traveller completely ignores his plea and asks the jury for their verdict, even before allowing the defense to present their case. The verdict is immediately returned and Spidey is found guilty. As such, Traveller sentences him to death, which is to be carried out by the prosecution and jury, which consists of other super-villains.
Things go from bad to worse when Spidey is paralyzed by Traveller. Fortunately for him, Kaine comes to his rescue and engages into battle with the super-villains that are trying to kill him. Kaine battles them admirably and fiercely but they are too much to handle alone. Strangely, Traveller chooses to end the battle by teleporting all of the villains back to their cells before they kill Kaine. Spider-Man asks why he came to Kaine's aid and Traveller reveals that he did so because he needed to understand him. He explains that the fact that a corrupt soul like Kaine would sacrifice himself for him speaks more about Spider-Man’s life than his actions ever could. Traveller then concludes that his experiment is over and teleports Spider-Man and Kaine back to where they were last. As they reappear over there, Stunner is waiting for them.
Back at the Ravencroft Institute, Carnage is in his cell, planning to kill Peter Parker and his family. Traveller visits him and wipes all of his memories, claiming that the knowledge of Spider-Man's secret identity is too precious for him. He does the same to all the other villains who witnessed the day’s events.

SUMMARY:
In Spider-Man Volume 1 #60, the story opens up with Stunner attacking Kaine and Spider-Man. She gets the upper hand against a weakened Kaine but Spider-Man comes to his rescue. Their battle is so violent that it causes a nearby building to collapse, nearly killing them. Pulling herself out of the wreckage, Stunner disappears. Spider-Man also extracts himself and Kaine from the rubble and tells Kaine that he (Kaine) is coming to the trial with him. Kaine replies that he will fight him with every ounce of strength he has to keep him from helping Ben Reilly, who is impersonating Peter Parker, while Peter tries to sort things out, which is what he is doing right now. Spider-Man understands where Kaine is coming from and nods in understanding. He then proceeds to put all of his power into a single devastating punch that knocks him unconscious.
Spider-Man is in the process of dragging Kaine into the courtroom when Kaine breaks free and attacks him. The battle is again quite violent, as both men throw each other through walls and create enough of a disturbance to cause the judge presiding over the Parker trial to call for a recess. The fight spills out into a private room where Kaine tells Spider-Man that they need to stop fighting. Spidey agrees as long as Kaine tells him the truth about everything. Kaine explains that if he – Spidey – would examine his actions, he would understand that Kaine is only trying to protect Peter Parker and that he just cannot allow him – Spidey – to throw it away and risk everything for Ben Reilly. Having said that, and wanting to prove his point even more, Kaine removes his mask and his face, though scarred, is revealed to be that of Peter Parker. Kaine reveals that he was the first clone of Peter Parker created by Professor Warren and that the degeneration factor has started to take effect, preventing him from ever having a real life. He goes on explaining that the degeneration factor also had an effect on his powers, somehow increasing them and making him more powerful than both he and Ben. He then explains that all of the above reasons is why he spend most of his life making sure that Peter Parker's life would never be in danger.
Spidey understands where Kaine is coming from but still cannot believe that he would not help Ben Reilly. Running out of options, Spidey realizes that the only way to save both Ben and clear his name is to reveal his identity to the world and explain everything about the whole clone saga (a feat, not the least). Kaine begs him not to do it but Spidey ignores him and enters the court to offer new evidence that will prove Peter Parker's innocence. He starts to pull his mask off when Kaine interrupts him and approaches the judge's bench to come clean. Kaine tells the judge and the whole court that he has hated Peter Parker ever since Parker took a picture of him while committing a murder and that, to get his revenge on him, he altered his fingerprints to match his, so as to implicate him in his most recent murders. Having said that, Kaine lets the court take his fingerprints as evidence to support his claims. Kaine will not go down that easy however and he sets out to do what he has wanted to do for years, which is to carry out Ben Reilly's execution. At issue's end, he lunges himself at Ben, who is in fact impersonating Peter Parker, which is a fact that Kaine does not seem to know...yet.

SUMMARY:
In Spectacular Spider-Man #226, the story opens with Ben Reilly, who is impersonating Peter Parker, being attacked by Kaine, only to be saved by the sudden appearance of Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Ben is glad to have Peter on the scene but knows full well that he is no match for a psycho powerhouse like Kaine. Mary Jane sees that Ben wants to jump in the mêlée, but she reminds him that he will jeopardize hers and Peter's future if he does so. Thankfully, Ben’s help is not required, as Peter/Spidey manages to take Kaine down, aided by none other than Detective Jacob Raven. The judge presiding over the court, after seeing the overwhelming evidence in front of him, declares Peter a free man. The news spreads like fire, all the way to the Daily Bugle, where Peter's co-workers and even J. Jonah Jameson, are ecstatic about the great news. While all this takes place, the Jackal is questioned by yet another Peter Parker clone to find out when he will be allowed to destroy the Parkers and Ben Reilly. The Jackal tells the clone to be patient and soon, they will have a nice family reunion.
Alone in his private laboratory, Dr. Seward Trainer double-checks the results of the genetic test he performed on the Parker fetus (in Web of Spider-Man #124). What he discovers is astounding and hopes that Ben Reilly and MJ are prepared for a shock. When Peter, Ben, and MJ arrive at the Parker home, they get a phone call from Trainer asking them to come down to the lab immediately.
At the same time as Peter, Ben and MJ are making their way to Trainer's lab, Kaine is being transferred to Ryker's Island. Suddenly, Kaine gets another vision of MJ dying, though, this time, he sees her murderer lurking in the shadows, and appears to recognize him. When Peter, Ben and MJ arrive at Trainer’s lab, Seward exchanges little pleasantries and immediately explains that the child is healthy; however, he has discovered something else that is troubling him. He goes on explaining that, when running tests on the fetus at the genetic level, he detected some kind of genetic drift, which suggests that one of the parents is quite possibly a clone. This does not sit well with Peter and he lashes out at Trainer, accusing him (and Ben) of trying to screw him over. Peter prepares to leave with MJ but MJ convinces him to do the tests himself to make sure that Ben and Trainer have not sabotaged the earlier experiment. Trainer interjects and explains that he has no vested interest in the final outcome and, as such, offers that they use his equipment to perform DNA tests on themselves and compare the results. Peter reluctantly agrees.
MJ watches on, as blood and tissue samples are taken, scrutinized, compared, contrasted, analyzed and subjected to an exhausting variety of examinations. She desperately wants the burden of uncertainty forever lifted from her husband's shoulder. After what seems to be hours, Ben and Peter reach the same conclusion. Peter is the clone and Ben Reilly is the real Peter Parker. Peter is so ticked off at this point that he lunges at Ben, accusing him of trying to steal his life. In the ensuing battle, Peter accidentally hits MJ when she tries to pull him away from Ben. Realizing what he just did, and how far he’s gone over the edge, he takes off.
Elsewhere, the Jackal is ready to begin mass-producing his new and improved Carrion virus. But he needs one last ingredient before starting, so he gives the third Peter Parker a costume he made for him and sends him on his way to retrieve said ingredient.
