SUMMARY:
In Maximum Clonage: Alpha, the Jackal and the third Peter Parker, called Spidercide, release a new and improved Carrion virus into the air in Springville, Pennsylvania, killing the entire population (approximately 2600 people). Back in New York City, Peter Parker, now revealed to be the clone, reflects on the life he thought was his and the events of the past few months that have led up to the startling revelation that he is the clone and that Ben Reilly is the real Peter Parker.
Ben Reilly is not accepting everything that is happening any better than Peter is. Though the revelation that he is the real Peter Parker was longed-for, he still feels that he was robbed of a life that should have been his for the last five years. While scouring the City for Peter, he stops at the Parker house to talk to Mary Jane. He tells her that he does not intend to claim Peter’s life as his own and that all he wishes to do is find Peter before things go from bad to worse. Mary Jane hands him a postcard of Springville, Pennsylvania, received from the Jackal. The message on it reads: "Wish you could have been here". While this takes place, miles away, the mysterious Kaine, revealed to be the first clone of Peter Parker, though a failed one, is being transferred to a new prison. During the transfer, he gets another vision of Mary Jane's death and, again, recognizes the killer as someone familiar. Yet, he still cannot figure out who the killer is. He breaks free to warn Peter and Mary Jane of this.
Meanwhile in Springville, Pennsylvania, a man has apparently survived the mass Carrion viral infection that wiped out the whole city. The Jackal wants to know why the virus did not kill that man so he sends Spidercide to get him. Spidercide finds the man but runs into the New Warriors, a group of superheroes; a battle naturally ensues. Just then, the Scarlet Spider arrives on the scene. The New Warriors think the Scarlet Spider is an ally of Spidercide so they attack him. As Spidercide is not supposed to get involved with any of them, he takes his leave, sans the survivor. The Scarlet Spider and the New Warriors set aside their differences and try and stop Spidercide and rescue the survivor. Unfortunately, they fail on both counts; Spidercide changes his genetic structure and manages to easily escape and capture the survivor as well.
Back in New York City, Peter Parker is packing his bags and preparing to leave. He has come to the realization that Mary Jane and the baby are better off without him so he picks up his Spider-Man costume and tells himself that he may not be the clone or the original Peter Parker, but he is still Spider-Man. He heads over to the Empire State Building, to recollect about his last moments with Aunt May. As he stands on the top deck of the building, he is interrupted by the Jackal, who taunts him into a fight. As they battle, the Jackal tells him that he is going to bring the world to genetic perfection through cloning and mentions that he could use his help (meaning Peter's). The Jackal extends his hand, telling Peter that it would give his life new purpose. Peter remains speechless and takes the Jackal's hand.

SUMMARY:
In Web of Spider-Man #127, the Jackal and Spider-Man discuss their newfound alliance when a SWAT team and the Punisher arrive on the scene. Spidey grabs the Jackal and takes him to safety, leaving a confused Punisher behind.
While all this takes place, Mary Jane worries about the effects that Peter being the clone may have on their unborn child.
Spider-Man and the Jackal take to the streets so that Peter can digest the information that the Jackal is providing him with. They are suddenly attacked by the Punisher. Spidey's spider-sense goes off, warning him that the Punisher has them in his crosshairs. The Punisher fires his gun; the bullets meant for Spidey. The Jackal leaps in front of Spidey, taking two gunshots to the chest; he falls to the ground. As he lies dying on the ground, the Jackal tells Spidey that the answer is in his bloodstream. But before the Jackal can continue with his explanations, the Punisher arrives to finish the job. Spidey attacks the Punisher and easily knocks him out. He then grabs hold of the Jackal and races back to the Jackal's lab where he puts him inside a cellular regeneration pod to heal his wound before it is too late. As Spidey sits next to the pod and eagerly waits for the results, the Jackal thinks to himself that things could not have worked better if he had planned them himself.

SUMMARY:
In Amazing Spider-Man #404, Spider-Man is still waiting outside the cellular regeneration pod inside which the Jackal is recuperating from his wounds sustained in the previous issue, when the Scarlet Spider, arrives on the scene, having finally tracked him down. Ben tries to comfort Peter but Peter lashes out at him. Ben continues to try and reason with Peter but Peter wants to be left alone and walks away. Just then, Spidercide appears and he is not please to see Ben at all. As this takes place, Kaine watches from above, and decides to let Ben die once and for all. Kaine turns his attention to the regeneration pod that contains the Jackal and destroys it. He pulls the Jackal out of the pod and asks him why he would take everything away from Peter especially since Peter has gone well beyond the Jackal's dreams of what a clone could accomplish. The Jackal offers Kaine a chance to be whole again, if he can figure out an end to the degeneration that is affecting him.
Peter/Spider-Man comes back and finds himself in the middle of the battle between Spidercide and the Scarlet Spider. Though Peter hates Ben, he does not know if he wants to see him die. The Jackal and Kaine also return. Ben continues to try and reason with Peter but Peter appears to be involved too much with the Jackal's schemes. Ben lashes out at the Jackal but both Peter and Kaine stop him, telling him that he does not belong in their world. Peter tells Ben to go back and claim his life and to leave them all alone.
While this discussion takes place, Spidercide is compelled to go down an empty hall, where he finds the source of the power calling for him: Scrier. Scrier is now revealed to be an entity, whose purpose, if revealed, would be unfathomable to the mortal mind. Spidercide asks Scrier to reveal himself to him. With the touch of a finger, Spidercide learns all and goes back to the main room where the Jackal orders him to kill Kaine.
Kaine is taken aback and confronts the Jackal about him promising to make him perfect. The Jackal replies that Kaine is nothing more than a walking heap of genetic trash and a complete waste of blood and hair. Hearing those words, Kaine breaks down, begging the Jackal to not abandon him again. But then, Kaine ultimately realizes he was a fool to ever trust the Jackal so he takes his leave, vowing to kill him another time. Spidercide grabs hold of Ben and takes him to a different room where he throws him in. When Ben regains consciousness, he sees an army of Spider-Man clones racing towards him.

SUMMARY:
In Spider-Man Volume 1 #61, the Scarlet Spider decides to run away rather than face the hundreds of Spider-Man clones racing towards him. His main objective is to find Peter to try and reason with him regarding his alliance with the Jackal, who is now telling Peter to bring back the original Gwen Stacy clone. Ben continues to search for Peter and he is being hunted by the Spider-Man clones, who have spread out through the Jackal's lab to try and find him. Luckily for Ben, it means that he only has to fight five or six of them at one time instead of a few hundreds.
In New York City, at the Parker home, Kaine confronts Mary Jane to try to figure out why Peter gave up his life to be with the Jackal. MJ has no clue whatsoever and asks Kaine why he cares so much. With that, Kaine reveals his full origin to her. He explains about the day he emerged from a cloning pod and how Professor Miles Warren was so pleased with the results until a small scar developed on his face. Though the scar was small, it was enough to distinguish him from the real Peter Parker, so he was cast aside. He continues explaining how he ran off before Professor Warren could dispose of him. He stayed close, however, lurking in the shadows, since it was the only life that he knew. He watched as Peter, his brother, emerged from the same cloning pod, and went on to live the life he could never have, to be the hero, the man that Kaine could never be and a symbol for him that he loved. Mary Jane tells Kaine that he is alive, no matter how he was born and she tells him to do what Peter would do, which is to accept the responsibility, just as he has accepted the powers.
Elsewhere, Peter Parker finds the Gwen Stacy clone, who had been expecting him. Together, they swing back to the Jackal's lair. Meanwhile, at said lair, Ben is still fighting off the hundreds of Spider-Man clones, when he discovers where the Jackal's new lair actually is: the old smokestack where his supposedly dead body was left (back in Amazing Spider-Man #149-151). Ben could spend days dwelling on it but the unexpected arrival of the entire army of clones quickly takes him back to reality. Within seconds, Ben is cornered by the clones. But, as they gang up on him, someone distracts them: Kaine. Ben tells Kaine that he will not stand by and let him kill the clones. Kaine agrees to not kill them, saying that they have as much right to live as anyone.

SUMMARY:
In Spectacular Spider-Man #227, Ben Reilly, as the Scarlet Spider, and Kaine continue to battle the hundreds of Spider-Man clones.
Meanwhile at the Parker apartment, Mary Jane gathers all of Peter's spider-tracers and activates them all at once in order to summon him. Miles away, Peter, accompanied by the Gwen Stacy clone, receives the signal and races back to the apartment, Gwen in tow.
In another part of the city, the Jackal expresses his concerns about the lone survivor of the mass genocide of Springville, Pennsylvania to Spidercide, his disciple. The Jackal simply cannot understand how that man survived his new and improved Carrion virus.
As Kaine and Ben continue battling the Spider-Man clones, they come to the realization that the clones were taken out of the cloning pods too early when they start decomposing in front of their eyes. While Kaine increases the pace of the fight, Ben tries to convince the clones that they can have normal lives if they try, citing Peter Parker as an example. Speaking of the devil, Peter arrives at the Parker apartment with Gwen and Mary Jane and Gwen quickly bond.
Ben tries to refrain from defending himself against the numerous attacks of the Spider-Man clones but Kaine does not. Several clones are sent crashing through a skylight and into the Jackal's lair. Witnessing this, the Jackal calls Spidercide to his side but the latter is nowhere to be found. Just then, Kaine enters the lair through the same skylight so the Jackal runs away to find his seemingly faithful clone (Side note: the New Warriors' top priority is to find the mastermind behind the destruction of the town of Springville). The Jackal catches Spidercide in the process of copying all of his files on the Carrion virus and sending them via modem to Scrier. He snaps his fingers, trusting that it will cause Spidercide to destruct on command (as it did for so many others) but it surprisingly does not work and Spidercide punches him across the lab, telling him that his degeneration factor was removed by Scrier in exchange for information. As Spidercide prepares to kill the Jackal, Kaine storms in and stops him. While all this takes place, Ben continues to fend off the attacks of the many Spider-Man clones who are started to degenerate even more in front of his eyes, causing him to puke on the ground.
Kaine and Spidercide engage into a fierce but even battle. However, when Kaine becomes distracted by another vision of Mary Jane dying, Spidercide impales him using a large piece of metal. At that exact moment, Ben arrives and takes on Spidercide while the Jackal grabs hold of Kaine and puts his body inside a regeneration pod before taking his leave. Ben gets the upper hand on Spidercide and sends him crashing into some kind of electrical apparatus, seemingly killing him. This results in a power outage in the whole building, allowing the sole survivor of the Springville genocide to escape. At issue's end, Ben confronts the Jackal but comes under attack by a large pile of genetic goo controlled by his opponent.

SUMMARY:
In Maximum Clonage: Omega, Ben Reilly has his hands full with the creature that is made up of genetic tissue of all the decomposed Spider-Man clones. However, when the Jackal threatens to kill his friends at the Daily Bugle, Ben gets a surge of energy and determination and he manages to break free.
Meanwhile at the Parker home, Mary Jane implores Peter to stay home with her and their unborn child while the Gwen Stacy clone screws up with his head and tells him that he belongs with his fellow clones. Peter tells MJ that he does not deserve her or the baby and he takes off with Gwen and heads out to find the Jackal.
When they arrive at the Jackal's lair, they find nothing but booby traps left by the Jackal to keep intruders away. Using his trusty spider-sense, Peter gets through them and discovers the Jackal's plan for the Daily Bugle and the rest of the world. Meanwhile, back at the Parker apartment, MJ dredges up some of Peter's spare web cartridges to help him and Ben for whatever they may need.
The Jackal, meanwhile, is in the process of setting up a Carrion virus bomb at the Daily Bugle (on the rooftop), when Scrier appears and tells him to stop what he is doing, because the destruction of the human race cannot be allowed. Scrier then orders Spidercide, who survived his battle with the Scarlet Spider in Spectacular Spider-Man #227, to deal with the Jackal.
Just then, Ben (the Scarlet Spider) arrives on the scene and attacks the Jackal and Spidercide. As the battle rages on, the Jackal torments Ben by asking him if he will be able to save his friends at the Daily Bugle, as successfully as he saved the real Gwen Stacy (which he didn't). Hearing those words, Ben comes to the realization that the Jackal's hatred for Spider-Man stems from the fact that Professor Miles Warren, the Jackal's alter-ego, blames Spider-Man for the death of Gwen Stacy. Spidercide takes over the fight against the Jackal from Ben, giving the latter some time to rest. Ben does not have the opportunity to rest for very long, as he finds himself back in the mêlée just in time to witness as Spidercide prepares to deliver the final deathblow. However, in the ensuing confusion, Spidercide is sent falling to his death from the rooftop.
Now facing the Jackal, Ben tries to get him to reveal how he managed to get him (i.e. Ben) to believe that he was the clone for all those years. The Jackal confesses that he implanted the thought in his brain while he was taking cell samples for his clones. On cue, Peter, as Spider-Man, and the Gwen Stacy clone arrive. Ben tells Peter to handle the Jackal while he takes care of disposing of the Carrion virus bomb. Unfortunately, as Ben works at defusing the bomb, the Jackal and Peter unwillingly bring the fight to Ben, forcing him to join in. Peter and Ben manage to web up their common adversary, and then they go to dispose of the bomb before it explodes. Though they do manage to defuse the bomb, they have another problem on their hands: the Gwen Stacy clone has gotten herself a gun and is readying herself to shoot the Jackal. The Jackal breaks free from the webbing while Ben and Peter try to convince the Gwen-clone not to become a killer and Mary Jane arrives on the scene. Distracted by Ben and Peter, the Gwen-clone loses her gun and is knocked off the rooftop by the Jackal. The moment seemingly frozen in time, Mary Jane throws to Ben the spare web-shooter she grabbed earlier (why not Peter...I don't know) and Ben snags the Gwen-clone in mid-air. The Jackal is no so fortunate however, as he plunges after the Gwen-clone to save her, hoping to prove that he could do what Peter could not, and ends up falling to his death. His final words are: "When the dream ends, the nightmare begins".
Before Ben, Peter, Mary Jane and the Gwen-clone can rejoice, Ben and Peter's spider-senses go off warning them that the bomb has been reactivated. Ben volunteers to dispose of it since he is neither married nor has he a child on the way, unlike Peter. Ben proceeds to throw the bomb in the air, snags it with a web-line and starts to spin it above his head, building up momentum until he finally releases it into the air where it explodes. Since Peter and Ben took the Carrion virus out of the bomb earlier on, the blast causes no damage. In the confusion that follows the explosion, the Gwen-clone disappears once again. Having accomplished what they had set out to do, Ben and Peter go their separate ways. Peter goes home with Mary Jane where he apologizes for the way he treated her over the past few weeks. He then proceeds to tell her that he needs to take care of one last thing and then everything will be over. Having said that, he heads over to Ben's apartment where Ben happens to be thinking about how he should both be Peter Parker and Spider-Man since the current Peter Parker is in fact a clone. Peter arrives at the apartment and tells Ben that he wants to give up his name and his costume. Ben replies that it is too easy an answer. At issue's end, they agree that there has to be a Spider-Man, but who it should be remains to be figured out.

SUMMARY:
In Web of Spider-Man #128, the story opens with Felicia Hardy, the Black Cat, having a difficult time accepting that the man she once loved (i.e. Peter Parker) was but a clone and not a real man at all. As she goes out for a swing, the story shifts to Peter Parker and Ben Reilly, who are visiting the graves of Aunt May and Uncle Ben. While there, they become aware that they are being followed. Donning their costumes, they track their follower and ask why he is following Peter Parker. The latter reveals that he is working for the Black Cat and that she has disappeared. Spider-Man (i.e. Peter) vows to find her and is joined in his search by the Scarlet Spider (i.e. Ben).
A short time later, Spidey and the Scarlet Spidey find the Black Cat, or rather are found by her, when she attacks Spidey for leading her on all these years when he was not even a real person, but a clone. Spidey apologizes to her and begs for her forgiveness, as he falls to his knees before her. Wondering what has gotten into Spidey, the Scarlet Spider realizes that his old nemesis, D’Spayre, whom he first encountered during his years in exile, is behind the whole thing. The Scarlet Spidey confronts D'Spayre while also trying to get the Black Cat and Spidey out from underneath the spell D'Spayre is casting. The Scarlet Spider manages to release them from the spell and they join him in fighting off D'Spayre, who seemingly withers away before them. Grateful, the Black Cat apologizes to Peter and lets him know that she cares for him no matter if he is real or a clone. Having said that, she takes off into the night.
Now alone, Peter and Ben come to the realization that, though they share Peter Parker's memories, they cannot share his life. With that in mind, Peter takes off his mask and tells Ben that it is not his life to keep, neither is the costume. Ben stops Peter and tells him that he has earned the right to live as Peter Parker as much as he did and also deserves to remain Spider-Man.
A short time later, Peter returns home to Mary Jane. MJ tells Peter that she wants to stay in New York and continue on with the life they had before the whole clone nonsense started. Across town, Ben Reilly grabs all of his stuff and heads out the door.

In Amazing Spider-Man #405, Ben Reilly is on his way out of the city when he crashes his motorcycle, leaving him stranded in New York. Ben dons his Scarlet Spider costume and swings across the city, winding up outside the Parker apartment. Knowing that he needs to give Peter the peace and happiness he deserves, Ben calls his friend, Dr. Seward Trainer to see if he can crash at his cabin in Vermont.
In a flashback sequence, we learn that Ben went to Vermont four years earlier to work as an assistant to Trainer. Ben figured that, by working with Trainer, a geneticist, he would be able to make money, have a home, and most importantly, find out about his condition. A friendship quickly developed, initiated when Trainer loaned Ben some money to rent an apartment.
Back in real-time, Ben gets a frantic call from said Dr. Seward Trainer, imploring him to get out of the cabin. Trainer cannot give him any further details, for fear that "they" will find him. Ben runs out of the cabin, just before it explodes. Fearing for his friend's life, Ben returns to New York to try and find him. Ben, as the Scarlet Spider, does not find Steward, but he does find these strange machines that are tapping into Trainer's computer mainframe, and then attack him when he gets to close to them. The machine's tentacled arms grad the Scarlet Spidery and shock him to the point of unconsciousness. At issue's end, it is revealed that Seward is imprisoned somewhere and whoever has him captive possesses long tentacled arms reminiscent of the late Doctor Octopus.

SUMMARY:
In Spectacular Spider-Man #228, the story opens with Peter Parker having nightmares about Kaine apparently chasing Mary Jane, only to be revealed that Kaine is trying to protect MJ from Peter, who is the one trying to kill her. When MJ asks about the nightmares, Peter lies to her face and heads into the bathroom. While in there, he gets a vision of the Jackal, who appears in the mirror, taunting him. Later that day, Peter begins to see the Jackal everywhere he goes. Freaking out and jumping to the conclusion that the clone degeneration is causing him to hallucinate, Peter dons his Spider-Man costume and swings into the night, more determined than ever to find out what is happening to him.
As Peter/Spider-Man swings across the city, he contemplates calling Dr. Seward Trainer to see if he can help. Before reaching a decision, a powerful headache suddenly rips through his skull, sending him crashing onto a nearby rooftop. An image of the Jackal appears to him and explains that a genetic implant he put into his mind years ago has now been activated. The trigger words were "When the dream ends, the nightmare begins", which were the Jackal's last words when he fell off the side of the bridge in Maximum Clonage: Omega. And the command stemming from these trigger words is that Peter will now be driven to kill the person he loves most.
Mary Jane returns home from a modeling shoot and finds Peter sitting in the living room, seemingly waiting for her. Grabbing tight onto his chair and holding himself back, Peter tells her to run because he has been programmed to kill her. He tells her to call either the Avengers or the Fantastic Four or anyone else that could stop him before he succeeds in his mission. Mary Jane grabs hold of a nearby lamp and smashes it on his head. She then takes off running. While on the run from Peter/Spider-Man, MJ calls the New Warriors, asking for the Scarlet Spider. When their leader reveals that he is not there, MJ quickly explains the situation and arranges to meet with them. She then makes her way aboard a subway train before Spidey can catch up to her. As she stands aboard the subway train, it is revealed that she did not call the Avengers or the Fantastic Four for fear that they would fight Spidey and possibly hurt him or maybe even kill him. She is confident that Ben Reilly and the New Warriors will be able to help.
Peter Parker/Spider-Man eventually catches up to the subway train carrying MJ. As he makes his way from one subway car rooftop to the next, MJ also makes her way from one car to the other, having been alerted of his presence by fellow passengers. As the subway train comes to a stop at its next station, MJ rushes out of it, thinking that she lost him. However, Spidey appears and grabs hold of her before she can escape any further. Just then, the New Warriors show up and tell him to back off and let her go. Spidey replies that he cannot and that he will fight them if they get in his way. He then begs them to stop him.

SUMMARY:
In Web of Spider-Man #129, the story starts with the arrival of the Scarlet Spider at the headquarters of the New Warriors, only to be informed that the team went out to rescue a woman who called on the phone.
Peter Parker/Spider-Man is battling the New Warriors while also trying to get to Mary Jane. MJ manages to escape and runs into the Scarlet Spider. She explains what happened to Peter and he promises to stop him without hurting him. MJ climbs into a nearby cab, hoping to getaway but the frightened driver runs out of the car, leaving her to step behind the wheel and drive herself out of there.
Peter/Spidey takes off after her, trying to figure out where she is going. Soon enough, he finds out; she drove him to the old Parker House in Forest Hills. When Peter/Spidey walks inside the house, he finds MJ casually sitting on a chair in the living room, surrounded by pictures of his family. MJ tells him that she has faith in him and also forgives him if he cannot control the programming in his brain. She also tells him that she prefers dying in a house full of good memories, than anywhere else. Childhood memories start flooding into Peter's brain, until he breaks down in tears, ridding himself of the Jackal's programming. MJ grabs hold of Peter tightly, as the Scarlet Spider watches on from a distance (he was close by as backup, just in case MJ’s plan did not work).

In Amazing Spider-Man #406, the story opens up with Ben Reilly in cyberspace, helping Dr. Seward Trainer in trying to retrieve missing information located in the system failsafe. The system suddenly starts to overload so Seward warns Ben to get out before he gets trapped in cyberspace forever.
Later that evening, Spider-Man is out and about and wonders if the Jackal has any more tricks up his sleeve. Though he has now found out that he is the clone and that the Jackal had programmed him to kill the one he loves most (i.e. Mary Jane, as seen in Spectacular Spider-Man #228), he still worries that the Jackal may resurface – he is suppose to be dead – and try once again to destroy everything he holds dear. As such, he is afraid of going back to a semblance of a normal life for fear that Mary Jane and their unborn child may be at risk. MJ catches up to him and convinces him to stop hiding behind the mask because they’re going to be a family and live happily ever after.
Meanwhile, elsewhere, the mysterious tentacled individual is finally revealed to be a new female Doctor Octopus. It is revealed that she is trying to break into Seward Trainer’s file system to get some information about research he conducted that would allow for simulations of organic matter within a virtual reality.
Ben and Seward discover an Octopus crest in the files, leading them to believe that whatever is going on may have been set in motion before the real Doctor Octopus was killed. Ben knows Peter has more knowledge and experience in the area but does not want to involve him, because he has too much to risk, so he decides to handle matters on his own. Before Ben leaves Seward’s lab, Peter and Mary Jane show up at the lab to ask Trainer to conduct an experiment on Peter to determine if there are more "time bombs" inside Peter.
After performing a few experiments, Seward detects no trace of any other anomalies. Happy and in the mood to celebrate, Peter and MJ head over to a restaurant to share a nice romantic dinner. While there, they tease each other about the sex of the baby and get to experience the child move for the first time.
Meanwhile, the female Doctor Octopus is testing her virtual reality bomb, causing people to think that dinosaurs are on the loose in the city. The prototype is successful so she prepares to build the real thing.
Seward Trainer is in his office, trying to break the encryptions when he finds the female Doctor Octopus in cyberspace. She is as surprised to find him there as he is but does not have a lot of time to dwell on it when the Scarlet Spider shows up to rescue him. That is easier said than done, because the female Doc Ock is revealed to be a lot stronger than expected. In the midst of the battle, Seward asks her why she is doing this, to which she replies that she was taught to revere scientific research above human life itself. When Scarlet realizes that Seward knows her and asks him about her, she reveals that she is his daughter.

SUMMARY:
In Spider-Man Volume 1 #63, the story opens up at the Parker apartment, where Peter Parker lies restless in bed. Ever since he felt his child move inside Mary Jane's belly, he cannot think straight. So, in order to burn off some energy, he heads out for a swing as Spider-Man.
The Scarlet Spider is taken aback by the revelation that the new female Doctor Octopus is Seward's daughter Carolyn. Conversely, Carolyn is furious with her father because he seems to share a father-son bond with Ben (i.e. the Scarlet Spider), a bond she claims she never had with her father. Ben wants to keep Seward safe but Seward doesn't want to repeat the errors of his past and leave his daughter again. Ben makes an executive decision and decides to grab hold of Seward and take off, the female Doc Ock in tow. As they escape, Seward notices that Ben is using more wisecracks than usual when he speaks and he comments on it. Ben replies that he is just trying to pick up where he left off five years ago.
Miles away, Spider-Man is web-slinging across the city when his spider-sense suddenly kicks in, instinctively warning him that something wrong is happening to Ben. Following his spider-sense, he finds Ben on a rooftop under attack by the female Doc Ock. He manages to help Ben out but is knocked off the roof accidentally. As he falls, the female Doc Ock grabs hold of him and threatens to break his neck unless Ben surrenders Seward, her father. As this takes place, Spider-Man can only think of two people: Mary Jane and their unborn child. Ben comes to his rescue by using his impact webbing to break through a force field created by the female Doc Ock. The female Doc Ock taunts Ben and then proceeds to test his speed by letting Spidey fall from the sky. Within seconds, Ben throws himself off the building after Spidey and gains enough momentum to catch him. The female Doc Ock uses that opportune moment to get away. When Ben and Spidey join Seward back on the rooftop, Ben tells Seward that he'll bring his daughter back without harming her. Ben then turns to Spidey and asks if he is okay. Spidey replies that he is not and explains that, when Doc Ock had him at her mercy, all he could think of was that his offspring would be left without a father. He then tells Ben that he needs to talk to Mary Jane because he has to make a decision.

SUMMARY:
In Spectacular Spider-Man #229, Spider-Man and the Scarlet Spider are scouring the city in search of Carolyn Trainer, the new female Doctor Octopus. Their search leads them nowhere so they return to the Parker apartment, only to discover that Mary Jane has been hospitalized after fainting at a photo shoot for maternity wear. They head over to the hospital where MJ's doctor informs them that microscopic traces of radioactivity where found in her bloodstream, which reacted with the normal hormonal changes, caused by her pregnancy. Dr. Seward Trainer shows up at the hospital and offers his services to try and figure out what is wrong with her. Trainer tells Peter that both MJ and the baby are in grave danger and that the situation is worse than he had anticipated. Having said that, he tells Peter that he secretly prepared an antidote, as he had a feeling that this would happen. He picks up his cell phone and calls his messenger, who has the antidote in his possession. Unfortunately, the female Doctor Octopus intercepts the call and orders some of her goons to hunt the messenger down and retrieve the antidote, which they successfully do.
At the hospital, MJ is not improving. While Peter continuously checks up on her, Ben Reilly and Trainer await the arrival of the messenger. As they wonder where he is, Trainer receives a phone call from his daughter Carolyn, the female Doc Ock, who informs him that she has the antidote and that she will give it back to them in exchange for him (Seward). Trainer notifies Peter and Ben and reluctantly agrees to her deal, knowing the Spider-Men will be close behind.
After telling MJ about the recent development, Peter dons his Spider-Man costume and swings off into the night with Ben, as the Scarlet Spider, and Seward Trainer. They drop Seward off at the rendezvous point and hide on a nearby rooftop overlooking the area. When Trainer disappears inside a parked van, Spidey and the Scarlet Spider decide to make their move. But, when they open the doors to the van, they discover a trap door leading straight into water underneath the docks. Fashioning themselves swimming gear out of webbing, they dive in.
Inside an underwater base, the female Doc Ock "persuades" her father to reveal access codes to a new technology he devised to project actual living matter into virtual reality. While she uses the codes obtained from her father to collect information from his computer files, she is alerted that Spider-Man and the Scarlet Spider have entered their hideout; her mysterious computerized ally sends a welcoming committee to greet them. Spidey and the Scarlet Spider fend off Doc Ock's goons and proceed in their search of the antidote and Seward respectively. Spidey finds the antidote, only to be attacked by the female Doc Ock. In another part of the underwater base, the Scarlet Spider finds Trainer but also comes under attack from the computerized entity, now revealed to be more than just a machine.
The battle between Spider-Man and the female Doc Ock takes an unexpected turn when Spidey causes the ceiling of the underground base to collapse and Doc Ock is swept away in the resulting undertow. Trapped underneath a huge pile of debris, Spidey is helpless. Elsewhere, the Scarlet Spider manages to short-circuit the electrical system, which forces the computerized entity to shut down. He then proceeds to free his friend and the two make their way out of there.
Spidey continues to struggle but time is running out and so is his air supply. Fortunately, the Scarlet Spider appears and helps him out. They then grab hold of the antidote, left there by the female Doc Ock, link up with Seward Trainer, fight their way to the nearest exit and return to the hospital, where the antidote is administered to MJ, who recovers completely. Though Peter is glad that MJ is all right, he comes to the realization that he cannot continue putting his life on the line, as he has done for so many years, especially because of the impending birth of his child. At issue's end, he hands over his costume to Ben and officially offers that he takes over the mantle of Spider-Man. Ben refuses to take the costume but gladly accepts the responsibility.

SUMMARY:
In Scarlet Spider Unlimited #1, the Scarlet Spider investigates the old warehouse that served as the Jackal's lair, only to discover that Detective Jacob Raven has beat him there. It is revealed that the Carrion virus, used by the Jackal to eradicate the population of Springville, Pennsylvania, originated from that location, which also happens to be the last known whereabouts of the mysterious Kaine. As Raven searches through the lab, he discovers a large containment pod inside which lies Kaine's body. Raven pulls his gun, to make sure that Kaine is in fact dead, but is stopped by a couple of strange creatures.
The Scarlet Spider enters the warehouse through the sewer system and starts looking for Detective Raven. Making his way through the warehouse, he ends up running into several more of the strange creatures that attacked Detective Raven. The creatures try to stop him but the Scarlet Spider takes them out and makes his way deeper inside the warehouse, where he finally locates Detective Raven, though Raven is trapped inside some kind of cocoon. The Scarlet Spider frees Raven only to be surrounded by more of the creatures, which have returned. As the Scarlet Spider readies himself to battle them, the High Evolutionary appears, telling the creatures, named Animen, to stand down. He starts to teleport them back to Wundagore, their home, but the Scarlet Spider tries to interfere with the teleportation. As he does so, he accidentally is transported to Wundagore, where he is quickly surrounded and outnumbered. Though he puts up a good fight, there are too many of them and he gets captured.
Another creature show up and recognizes the Scarlet Spider as "the other". The Animen are taken aback and bow in admiration. As the Scarlet Spider looks around, he sees a statue erected in memory of the Jackal. It is revealed that the Animen believe – as was revealed in Spectacular Spider-Man Annual #8 - that the Jackal infected his assistant Anthony Serba with a genetic virus that altered his DNA, turning him into a biological duplicate of the original Peter Parker. The Scarlet Spider tries to argue that it is not the truth, but the Animen call him a false prophet. The Animen go on explaining how the High Evolutionary wanted to create a new race by evolving animals into higher form and that it was thanks to Professor Miles Warren that they were able to do so. The major drawback, however, was that the High Evolutionary wanted to create a race of gods, while Professor Warren wanted to create the perfect human. As a result of this disagreement, Professor Warren was banished from Wundagore. Nonetheless, several "new men" followed him back and volunteered to undergo genetic experiments. Unfortunately, the experiments did not turn them into human; rather, they were turned into living corpses until their death: the Carrion virus.
It was around that time that Professor Warren started experimenting with cloning in order to create spontaneous life. In the guise of the Jackal, he returned to Wundagore to try and blend in with the creatures. He revealed to them that he perfected the cloning process and gained new followers as a result of this revelation. Angered by the Jackal's affirmation, the High Evolutionary took steps to prove that he was a fraud by capturing the Gwen Stacy clone and performing a series of tests on her; tests that revealed that she was not a clone at all – she is nothing more than a genetic duplicate. The Jackal's followers were not easily convinced and made arrangements to retrieve Professor Warren's journal. Reading through the journal, they discovered that the High Evolutionary was telling the truth.
The Scarlet Spider is taken aback by this surge of new information and as he thinks about it, the High Evolutionary teleports him to his "ready room". Then the High Evolutionary decides to tell him the whole story about Professor Warren and the clones. It is revealed that Warren was indeed his assistant and working on ways to turn animals into sentient bipeds. The jackal was the one creature Warren was enamored, however, the experiment turned out to be a failure – the jackal creature resulting from the experiment, seemed to exhibit a Jekyll and Hyde personality. Professor Warren was consequently banished, though the Jackal stayed in his life, hunting him and going so far as kill his family. Blaming the High Evolutionary for their deaths, Professor Warren returned to Wundagore to challenge him. Since his cloning process was a threat to the High Evolutionary, a false journal was planted in one of Professor Warren’s labs. This journal outlined a story about genetic duplication so Professor Warren's people would not know the truth and hold him with such reverence. Eventually, Professor Warren indeed perfected the cloning process, and the Gwen Stacy and Peter Parker clones were created and they were not genetic duplicates but the real thing.
With that revealed to him, the Scarlet Spider convinces the High Evolutionary to enlighten his people as well and he is then teleported back to the Jackal's lab where he awakens Detective Jacob Raven just in time for the two of them to discover that the containment pod in which lied Kaine is now empty.

In Spectacular Scarlet Spider #2, the Scarlet Spider cannot go anywhere without the entire city shouting obscenities and throwing hard objects at him. This causes him to be late for work so Mr. Tso fires him. Returning home, he finds his apartment completely trashed by his cyber self. Seward Trainer appears to him (from the virtual world) and notifies him of his daughter's plan to merge reality with Cyber-Space (Seward's daughter is the new female Doc Ock).
The new female Doc Ock and her henchmen attack Mr. Tso to get hold of a chip needed to finalize the "merge" of the two worlds. Alastair Smythe, Tso's employer, sends his Cyber-Slayers after Ock and her cronies. However, before Smythe can revel in his victory, Mr. Tso double-crosses him and he takes control of the Cyber-Slayers, leaving Smythe to take on Doc Ock by himself. Though Mr. Tso momentarily gets away, he meets his demise when The Pro catches up to him.
Doc Ock's and the Master Programmer's plan to merge reality with Cyber-Space seems to come to fruition when reality begins to shift and the Master Programmer start to take on a more human form. Fortunately, the Scarlet Spider, assisted by Seward Trainer, uploads a computer virus into the system and it neutralizes the entire merging process. The Scarlet Spider saves the day, however Doc Ock manages to escape before he can stop her. Despite his heroic efforts, people still think the Scarlet Spider is a terrorist and monster.
Ben visits Seward Trainer at the hospital and tells him that his daughter (Seward's) was easily able to destroy his reputation because no one had a reason to trust him in the first place. He adds that it was easy for Doc Ock to ruin the image of an unknown like the Scarlet Spider, however, she would never be able to do the same to Spider-Man.

In Sensational Spider-Man #0, the story opens with Ben Reilly visiting the graves of Aunt May and Uncle Ben at the cemetery. While there, he spots a mugging and goes after the mugger, whom he apprehends. While doing so, he is spotted by Anna Watson, Mary Jane's aunt. Anna wonders why Peter (she assumes it is him) is looking so worn out and where MJ is. Pretending to be Peter Parker, Ben makes up an excuse and takes his leave. Continuing on with his soul searching, Ben soon realizes that he cannot go around New York looking like Peter Parker and, though he desires nothing more than to take up the mantle of Spider-Man, he doesn't have a costume, nor does he have any money. Wanting to fix these problems, he heads to a local convenience store and buys supplies to concoct a new web fluid formula. He then heads home to work on that. A short time later, he goes to the Daily Grind, a local diner, to get some food. After grabbing lunch, he finds himself unable to pay his bill. The owner, thinking that he is homeless, spots him the money for his meal. Later that same night, Ben visits the fashion department of the nearby Centennial University to try and locate discarded fabric to create a new Spider-Man costume for himself. After working on it for a while, he comes up with a modernized version of the classic red and blue costume.
As Spider-Man, Ben goes out for a swing and immediately finds trouble, in the form of a villain known as Armada. As Ben takes care of Armada, he is unaware that a woman named Jessica Carradine is snapping pictures of him and it is revealed that she has waited a long time for this day to come. Though Ben takes Armada into custody, he fails to apprehend some of her technical gadgets, which fly off with a revolutionary broadcasting chip that was stolen earlier in its possession. As Ben heads home, the gadgets return to their true master: Mysterio.
The following day, Ben, now with his hair died blond, goes back to the Daily Grind to repay the owner for the money she loaned him the previous night. Sensing goodness in his heart, the owner gives Ben a job as waiter. Later on that day, Ben returns to the cemetery to thank Aunt May and Uncle Ben for making him the person he is today.

SUMMARY:
In Amazing Spider-Man #407, the Human Torch, wondering what happened to Spider-Man, writes a message in the sky with his flames, telling Spidey to meet him at their usual place later that night. Elsewhere, the freelance mercenary known as Silver Sable, who is at the head of the Wild Pack, decides to investigate Spidey to find out if he's been replaced by an impostor or if he's the real one. To do so, she sends the now reformed Sandman to test him out. While all the above takes place, Mysterio is testing out the new digital imagery chip he stole in Sensational Spider-Man #0. This chip enables its holder to create instant programming into somebody else's thoughts.
Ben Reilly takes the ferry to the Statue of Liberty, where he is supposed to meet with the Human Torch, as Spidey. While onboard the ferry, he spots the Sandman. After changing into his Spider-Man duds, Ben confronts him. When Spidey refers to Silver Sable as a "blonde cutie", Sable instructs the Sandman to make the test more difficult for Spidey. While the battle rages on between Spidey and the Sandman, Sable watches on, noting that Ben is as strong and agile as the other Spider-Man, although his moves are different and not as well choreographed. To her, he appears less experienced and more lighthearted. After watching them for a while, she calls off the attack by ordering the Sandman to retreat.
When the Human Torch arrives at the statue, he finds Spidey being offered a freelance job with the Wild Pack by Silver Sable herself. After she is gone, Torch confronts him and berates him with tons of questions about who he is and what happened to the original Spidey. Ticked off, Torch flies off, vowing to keep an eye on him, calling him a "phony" in the process. Once everybody is gone, Ben thinks about how difficult things have become since he was last on active duty. He wonders what kind of world he's in, with the Human Torch as an enemy and the Sandman as an ally.

She (silently) acquiesces to his demand, although it is not revealed immediately, and proceeds to teleport Spidey away, claiming to have killed him. El Toro Negro claims that he must still kill Carlos and as he prepares to do so, Spider-Man is secretly teleported within striking distance of him and he saves the day.

SUMMARY:
In Sensational Spider-Man #1, Ben Reilly meets Jessica Carradine, a photographer introduced in Sensational Spider-Man #0, at the Daily Grind. They hit it off pretty quickly and soon, they head back to her student work area, where she shows him the most recent subject of her photographs: Spider-Man. Before they can continue on with their conversation, Ben recognizes Dr. Ramirez, whose technology was recently stolen by Armada for Mysterio. Ben ditches Jessica and follows Dr. Ramirez back to his place, only to find him sitting in front of the television, watching Mystery Vision like a zombie. Realizing that the above television show has an adverse affect on Dr. Ramirez, Spidey webs the screen and swings out towards the headquarters of Mystery Vision to further investigate.
Spidey meets with Randolph Hines, the president of the company that broadcasts Mystery Vision. Hines gives him a tour of the facility and lets him try some of the technology. Hines is then revealed to be Mysterio in disguise and reality starts to shift, creating confusion for the wall-crawler. He no longer knows what is real and what is an illusion. Spidey is actually unaware that he is wearing adhesive, film-like receivers over his mask, placed there when he was toying around with the technology, which causes him to see the illusions as real. Totally disoriented, Spidey tries to swing out of the building but his web-shooters malfunction, causing him to fall.

SUMMARY:
In Amazing Spider-Man #408, the story opens with Spider-Man falling towards imminent death. Fortunately, Spidey manages to slow his momentum down and grab onto a nearby building, though he is obviously in pain from the sudden stop. While Spidey hangs in this rather dangerous position, the villain known as Armada coincidently happens to break out of police custody to have a rematch with him. While hanging up there, Spidey notices, in an alley down below, that members of a street gang are getting riled up and causing trouble. As he swoops down on them to check it out, Mysterio shows up and uses his powers to make Spidey believe that the gang members are actually monsters. Spidey falls for the trap and starts to beat the crap out of the gang members. When he starts to realize that something is off, he tries to get some answers but the gang members are unresponsive.
Armada finally arrives on the scene and joins with the gang members to eliminate Spidey. The battle soon turns into an all-out-brawl, with Armada getting the upper hand on the wall-crawling wonder. As they battle, the film-like receivers that Mysterio attached to his mask in Sensational Spider-Man #1 begin to come loose, enabling Spidey to get his bearings back. While this takes place, Mysterio watches on from a distance, vowing to succeed in his mission to defeat Spider-Man.

SUMMARY:
In Spider-Man Volume 1 #65, Spider-Man (a.k.a. Ben Reilly) goes out in search of Mysterio but the master of illusions has already abandoned his base of operations when Spidey finally discovers its location. While Ben heads back home to rest, Mysterio, as Randolph Hines, hosts a party at his newly renovated office. Hines leaves the party for a few minutes, changes back into Mysterio, and checks on his television network: Mystery Vision. As he does so, he predicts that he will soon have the one thing that he always desired: fame.
Ben Reilly is awakened the next day by Jessica Carradine, who is ready for their next date. As they walk along a street, they notice that people are assembled in front of an electronics store and their eyes are glued to a television set on display behind the window. Just then, a nearby traveling truck loses control and crashes. As Ben wonders how he will be able to change into Spider-Man, with Jessica standing next to him, and help the truck occupants, Jessica takes off running towards the accident to take some pictures to sell to the Daily Bugle. Ben uses the opportunity to slip away and transform into his alter ego. He then races back towards the truck to help the driver and passenger. As he pulls them out of the wreckage, he notices that Jessica is focusing on him, snapping his picture, and causing him to be worried. Jessica suddenly stops taking pictures when she gets caught up in the excitement over the television set on display and becomes somewhat of a zombie herself. Once Spidey drops the accident victims off to safety, he proceeds to cover up the television set, thus freeing its viewers from its influence.
With some assistance from Dr. Ramirez, Spidey reverses the signal of the lenses that were place over his mask and manages to locate Mysterio's new digs. He heads over there to confront the master of illusions. After breaking in the facility, he is confronted by various illusions, but battles through each one, using his trusty spider-sense as a guide. At issue’s end, Spidey destroys the device that forces people to watch Mystery Vision and captures Mysterio.

SUMMARY:
In Sensational Spider-Man #3, Spider-Man (a.k.a. Ben Reilly) is being hunted by the NYPD for stealing the aforementioned skeleton. While investigating the possible escape of Carnage from the Ravencroft Institute, he finds himself surrounded by the police. Thankfully, Peter Parker, who had tracked him down using a police scanner, comes to his rescue and the two are able to escape.
During the drive home, Ben tells Peter about the concerns he has with his new girlfriend, Jessica Carradine. He shows him a picture of Jessica on her 7th birthday, with a blurred image of her father in the background, and tells him that there is some kind of connection between her father and her hatred towards Spider-Man. Ben goes on explaining how she was upset when he reacted strangely upon finding out about her over-the-top fascination with Spider-Man, as displayed by the wallpapered room of Spider-Man photos. It was then that she asked him to trust her and proceeded to reveal that her father was sent to prison for a crime he did not commit. Jessica had then explained that her father was accused of murder but the truth was, an old man had mistaken him for a burglar, had pulled a gun on him and in the ensuing struggle, the old man was killed and her father was found guilty and sent to prison. When he – Ben – had tried to figure out how Spider-Man was connected to the story, Jessica had simply kept going on and on about how Spider-Man was a murderer. Trying to defend Spider-Man, Ben had asked her if her father had ever interacted with Spider-Man. Jessica remained evasive and told him she did not like to talk about it. Ben then tells Peter that, after stopping by the Daily Grind to drop off his time card, he ran into a victim of an attack by someone who sounded suspiciously like Carnage. This led him to come to Ravencroft to verify that Carnage was still in custody, which is when the authorities showed up and Peter arrived shortly thereafter to help.
To try and solve the mystery of the skeleton clad in a torn Spider-Man costume, Peter and Ben head over to the Avengers’ Headquarter to get some answers to their questions. Ben, as Spider-Man, tells Giant Man, who will be performing some tests, that he’s brought along Peter to memorialize the moment where he is cleared of being the "impostor who killed Spider-Man". While Giant Man performs a series of tests on the skeleton, Peter uses a machine to digitally enhance the picture of Jessica Carradine’s 7th birthday. What he discovers about Jessica’s father leaves him flabbergasted. Her father is the burglar that killed Uncle Ben. The next shock comes from Giant Man, when he reveals that the skeleton has been in the smokestack for at least 5 years and is a clone of Spider-Man.

SUMMARY:
In Amazing Spider-Man #410, Peter Parker and Ben Reilly return from the Avengers’ Headquarter, as perplexed as they were when they first went in. After all, if Ben is the original Peter Parker, and the skeleton found in the smokestack is the original clone, then what does that make of Peter Parker? Unable to think straight, Peter decides to pay a visit to Dr. Seward Trainer, hoping that he will help him straighten things out. Before taking off, Peter takes a picture of Ben, as Spider-Man, with the skeleton, to make J. Jonah Jameson happy.
With rumors still swirling around that Carnage or some kind of doppelganger is roaming around the city, Spidey heads to Ravencroft only to find that Carnage is indeed incarcerated. While there, Spidey decides to follow a suspicious employee named Dickerson, who ends up going into an underground club frequented by super-villains. It is revealed that Dickerson is selling authentic merchandise, like bandages and towers, from Ravencroft inmates. As Spider-Man watches Dickerson work his clientele, Carnage bursts into the club. Despite the fact that this Carnage is a genuine alien symbiote, possessing powers similar to that of the real Carnage and Venom, Spidey figures out that this Carnage is too tall and bulky to be Cletus Kasady, the original Carnage. In the ensuing confusion, Carnage manages to get away.
Meanwhile, Peer Parker and his wife Mary Jane visit Dr. Seward Trainer at the hospital, where he’s been since his encounter with his daughter, the new female Doctor Octopus. Somebody, standing guard in a vehicle on the street, calls Seward’s room and warns him of what to do. Recognizing the voice at the other end of the line, Seward tells the person that he understands and proceeds to call the front desk to tell them not to allow Peter or MJ to see him at that time. Peter is immediately suspicious, but accepts the setback...for now.
At the Daily Bugle, Jessica Carradine shows her Spider-Man photos to Robbie Robertson. Overhearing their conversation, J. Jonah Jameson jumps in and suggests that she take pictures showing Spider-Man in a bad light, as they are more likely to sell. This greatly inspires Jessica.
Ben Reilly, as Spider-Man, is now following John Jameson, head of security at Ravencroft. His hunch proves fruitful when Jameson transforms into Carnage. Ben confronts Jameson/Carnage to find out how the symbiote bonded to him and to help him get rid of it. Jameson manages to fight off the symbiote’s influence just long enough to tell Spidey that the symbiote is using him as a temporary host until it finds someone with more strength. Just then, the symbiote launches itself at Ben/Spidey, bonding with him. The Spider-Carnage immediately starts to cause mayhem throughout the city, followed by Jessica Carradine, who is snapping away with her camera.

Fortunately for Jessica, Ben Reilly manages to keep the alien symbiote imprisoning him from committing this terrible act. Spider-Carnage leaves and goes to Ben’s apartment to wait for Peter Parker.
While Spider-Carnage waits for Peter Parker, the alien symbiote in him tries to take over Ben's conscience. It suggests to him that he ought to kill Peter so there would be no question as to which one, out of the two of them, is the clone. Ben manages to control the symbiote and not kill Peter, who has arrived. However, Ben's internal struggle strikes a chord with Peter, who suggests that they ought to visit Dr. Seward Trainer to try and get some answers. Somehow infuriated by Peter’s suggestion, Ben lashes out at him and forces him to leave his apartment.
Peter heads over to the hospital to visit Trainer only to find that the latter has been discharged and is billing address is not available. When he digs a little bit, he discovers that his medical bills were paid by the Multivex Corporation. Spider-Carnage (i.e. Ben), who has followed Peter to the hospital, attacks him. In the ensuing battle, Ben regains control of the symbiote long enough to allow Peter to live through the confrontation.

In Spectacular Spider-Man #233, Spider-Carnage goes on a tear across the city, delivering his own brand of justice to criminals. Thankfully for the citizens of New York City, Ben Reilly has enough control over the alien symbiote to prevent it from killing them. Believing to be able to get help at Ravencroft, Ben takes control of the alien symbiote and heads over there.
While this takes place, Peter Parker is busy tracking down Dr. Seward Trainer's whereabouts, which lead him to the Multivex Corporation. He tries in vain to obtain some information but is escorted outside by security. As Peter takes his leave, a mysterious person inside the building tells Trainer that they wish to see him continue his experiments in private. The purpose of the experiments is not revealed.
Spider-Carnage arrives at Ravencroft, where the security team tries to bring the symbiote inside. After a bit of a fuss, the symbiote simply returns to its proper host: Cletus Kasady and re-bonds with him. It is then revealed that the symbiote made it out of there, in the first place, via the plumbing underneath the sink.
