SUMMARY:
In the opening pages of Sensational Spider-Man #4, Peter discovers that J. Jonah Jameson has hired a forensic expert to reconstruct the face of the skeleton. Elsewhere, Ben Reilly gets caught changing out of his Spider-Man costume by his girlfriend, Jessica Carradine, who earlier revealed to him that her father was killed, years ago, by Spider-Man (or so she seems to think). He tries to talk to her but she doesn't want to have anything to do with him. Ben later meets with Peter and the two of them dispose of the skeleton by burying it into a graveyard. While doing that, Peter tells Ben that he is suspicious of Dr. Seward Trainer, who performed the tests that revealed that he was the clone and that Ben was the real Peter Parker. Ben refuses to accept that Trainer could have done such a thing as rigging the tests.

SUMMARY:
In Amazing Spider-Man #411, the Daily Bugle puts out a $100,000.00 reward for the return of the stolen skeleton. Elsewhere, Ben Reilly has more problems than he can chew. The heat in his apartment has been shut off, because his rent check bounced, a trip to the bank reveals problems with his social security number, and a visit to the Daily Grind, where he works, adds to his misery when Shirley, his employer, reveals that two men claiming to be cops came by and warned her about him, telling her that he has a history of violent and erratic behavior against his employers.
While all of the above takes place, Peter Parker and Mary Jane argue about whether to go back home to Portland or get to the bottom of the skeleton mystery. Meanwhile at the Multivex Corporation, the mystery man who has been harassing Dr. Seward Trainer is shown in more detail. He wears some kind of environmental suit that keeps his body functioning and he needs Seward to help him get back to his physical prime.
While out shopping, Peter and Mary Jane are attacked and dragged into an alley by a cybernetically enhanced mercenary squad known as Cell-12. Peter tries to convince them to let go of MJ, but to no avail (they do promise to not hurt her). The squad beats the hell out of Peter, until he falls to the ground. As they leave, they tell him to not poke is nose where it doesn't belong. Meanwhile, Ben returns to his apartment and is shocked to discover it completely empty, the words "We Know Who You Are", written on the floor. Realizing that whoever did this to his apartment might want to lash out against his workplace, he rushes over there but arrives too late. The Daily Grind has been burned down to the ground.

SUMMARY:
In Spider-Man Volume 1 #68, the police try to implicate Ben Reilly into the Daily Grind fire, because of his history of lashing out at employers (which we all know is untrue). While this takes place, Peter Parker and Mary Jane discuss his recent beating at the hands of the Cell-12 squad.
Thinking that Jessica Carradine, his ex-girlfriend, is behind the recent misery in his life, Ben shows up at her apartment and warns her to stay out of his life. He swings off, as Spider-Man, and realizes that there is only one person he can talk to: Dr. Seward Trainer. Having tagged him with a spider-tracer earlier, he begins tracking him. He arrives at a location and is attacked by the Cell-12 squad. He disposes of them quickly and easily, and then comes face-to-face with their leader: the Hobgoblin (who now has many cybernetic enhancements on his costume). Having never faced the Hobgoblin before – this is Ben after all – he mistakenly refers to him as the "Green Goblin". During the ensuing battle, the Hobgoblin reveals that he has been orchestrating everything that has been happening to Peter Parker and Ben Reilly, as instructed by his employer. As he gets the upper hand on Spidey, the Hobgoblin is ordered to stop by none other than Seward Trainer. Spidey is shocked to realize that Trainer is involved and he cannot help but to watch helplessly – he is incapacitated by injury – as his friend walks away with the Hobgoblin. After a few minutes of gathering his strength, Spidey manages to get out of there, all the while thinking about this overwhelming development. He races to where Peter and Mary Jane are staying, enters their room, and collapses to the floor, waking them in the process.

SUMMARY:
In Spectacular Spider-Man #234, Ben Reilly is depressed about how he failed both as Spider-Man and as himself. As he talks to Peter and Mary Jane Parker about it, he confesses that he has come to the realization that the mastermind behind everything that has happened to them has to be Dr. Seward Trainer. Having a hard time wrestling with the idea that Trainer is involved, Ben, as Spider-Man, swings off into the night. Miles away, Trainer is having a heated argument with the mystery man introduced in Amazing Spider-Man #411 and his bodyguard, The Hobgoblin, about the fact that they had agreed that Ben Reilly would not get hurt. Trainer loses that round.
Ben goes to Jessica Carradine's apartment and apologizes to her for accusing her of being the mastermind being everything that has happened to him. He professes his love to her but then he screws up everything by asking her to burn the negatives of the pictures revealing that he is Spider-Man. Believing that he only apologized to her to get the pictures, she kicks him out of her apartment. While this takes place, Liz-Allan Osborn, current CEO of Osborn Industries, notices some irregularities while looking at the company's quarterly financial report. She calls her brother, Mark Raxton, a.k.a. the Molten Man, to ask him if he knows anything about incredible amounts of money being funneled to a small research company called Multivex (where the mystery man and Trainer were arguing earlier); Raxton is clueless.
When Ben returns home, he finds out that Peter has gone to Multivex to get answers from Trainer. Ben immediately takes off after him.
Peter breaks into Multivex and makes his way through the building undetected, until he decides to take a detour and runs right into the arms of the Cell-12 squad. Thankfully, Ben, as Spider-Man, arrives on the scene and takes them all out. But then, the Hobgoblin shows up. Peter and Ben split up; Ben confronts the Hobgoblin while Peter takes off after Seward. Coincidently, Peter, Seward, Ben, and the Hobgoblin all end up on the same rooftop. Peter tackles Seward to the ground and is about to question him when he notices the Hobgoblin's glider heading towards a large fuel tank (Ben pushed the Hobgoblin off his glider during their fight). Peter launches himself after the glider and grabs hold of it. He tries to steer it to safety but loses control and is knocked off. Witnessing this, Ben abandons his battle with the Hobgoblin and rescues Peter. This distraction allows both the Hobgoblin and Trainer to disappear. At issue's end, Peter and Ben realize that the Hobgoblin and Trainer are but pawns to somebody else, which brings them right back to square one: who is behind everything and why.

SUMMARY:
In Amazing Spider-Man #412, the issue opens up with Spider-Man (i.e. Ben Reilly), Peter Parker, and Mark Raxton, surrounded by Multivex security team. While Spider-Man takes them on, Peter stands on the sidelines and Raxton confronts the mystery man, who seems to be orchestrating the whole thing. Raxton and the mystery man engage into a battle, during which it is revealed that the mystery man relies on his suit to survive because his body is dying and rotting away. It is also revealed that the mystery man is willing to do anything to be free, including working for the devil himself. The mystery man takes Raxton out and proceeds to engage Spider-Man into battle. During their battle, the mystery man reveals that Spidey has encountered him in the past, though his appearance was quite different than it is now. Spidey wonders who the mystery man is and shudders when he considers that it could be Harry Osborn, the second Green Goblin.
While this takes place, Peter continues to look for Dr. Seward Trainer but is interrupted in his search by a voice over the intercom announcing that the "game is over". At this point, it is revealed that Mary Jane was captured when she came over to Multivex to try and warn Peter and Ben. Peter surrenders and is captured.
While Spidey and the mystery man continue to battle each other, Seward calls out the mystery man, referring to him as Gaunt, and informs him that the regenerator is all set to begin the "rebirth" procedure. Gaunt proceeds to tease Spidey about the fact that his (and Trainer's) employer is another former acquaintance of his and then uses gas to knock him out before Spidey can react to this alarming news.
As Gaunt prepares for his rebirth, Peter, MJ, Spidey, and Raxton try to break free from their bonds. Spidey manages to expand his chest muscles and breaks free from his chains without drawing the guards' attention. During the ensuing battle, the regenerator is heavily damaged. Peter, MJ, Spidey and Raxton escape the lab unscathed, while Trainer stays behind to keep the regenerator from exploding before they can make it out of there. Believing Trainer to be dead, Ben/Spidey wonders if Trainer sacrificed himself for them by sabotaging the machine or if he was actually trying to save himself by saving the machine.
At issue's end, Gaunt accuses Seward of trying to sabotage the regenerator, which Seward strongly denies. Their argument is interrupted by another mysterious person who seems to be the real mastermind behind everything that has happened to Peter and Ben. Though little is revealed about his identity, clues that he has been manipulating events and people from the shadows for years seem to corroborate the fact that he is a former acquaintance of Peter's. He also vows to make Peter and Ben pay for what they did to him, at a time and place of his choosing. Who is this mysterious person?

SUMMARY:
In Spider-Man Unlimited #12, J. Jonah Jameson wants forensic scientists to examine the bones of the skeleton to determine its identity. In order to examine the skeleton, Jameson has to find it first so he is offering a $100,000.00 reward to anyone who can locate the skeleton (as seen in Amazing Spider-Man #411). As a result of this, Spider-Man has had to deal with the likes of the Beetle, Shocker, Boomerang and the second Jack O’Lantern.
While Spider-Man deals with hordes of new super-villains trying to cash in on the reward, Peter Parker is forced by the Pro to dig up the skeleton, which Ben Reilly and him buried in a graveyard. Spider-Man makes his way to the graveyard to help Peter out but a welcoming committee made up of the police and reporters forces him and Peter to hand the skeleton over to them.
The forensic team reconstructs the face of the skeleton, only to reveal the face of Peter Parker. Since Peter took part in an earlier test to verify the authenticity of the imaging device, as per a request from J. Jonah Jameson, the scientists deduce that there is some kind of problem with their imaging system (they assume his earlier picture somehow got mixed up with this new one) and that, as such, the experiment is deemed a failure.

SUMMARY:
In Amazing Spider-Man #417, the story opens with Peter Parker waking up in a cold sweat, having had a nightmare in which Judas Traveller appeared to him, warning him that they both had been betrayed and manipulated. Thankfully, Mary Jane is by his side and offers words of comfort.
The following day, the Host try to capture Chakra, as they know she has been secretly providing Traveller with sensitive information. Chakra tries to defend her actions but the Host tells her that Traveller is not their leader. Chakra manages to escape, but not before Mr. Nacht warns the Host that their performance will not be tolerated very well by their employer.
At the Daily Grind, Peter visits Ben Reilly to talk to him about his dream. They share information about Traveller and his Host, and most importantly, discuss Traveller's ability to read minds, time travel, and destroy city blocks with a thought, which makes them wonder why he even needs the Host to back him up. When the conversation changes to MJ's pregnancy, Peter uses the occasion to ask Ben to become their daughter's godfather. Ben happily accepts, just as Peter's pager goes off; it's Robbie Robertson from the Daily Bugle. Peter calls Robbie, who asks him if he can contact Spider-Man, because John Jameson of Ravencroft is looking for him.
In an abandoned warehouse, Mr. Nacht meets with Gaunt and Scrier, and updates them on the Host's failure. Gaunt is furious and explains that their employer wants Traveller neutralized before he can interfere with his plans for Spider-Man. Scrier tells Gaunt to calm down and explains that Chakra will be found and Traveller is in no position to save himself now, as the scene cuts to Traveller sleeping in a containment pod.
Ben, as Spider-Man, and Peter arrive at Ravencroft where John Jameson immediately introduces them to a frantic Chakra, who tells them that Traveller is not who they think he is and the power he holds is not what it seems. She explains that he is in grave danger and that she needs Spidey's help. Peter tells Chakra that they will help until Spidey remains him that he has a family to take care of. Peter doesn't argue and heads home. When he arrives at the house, he is greeted by none other than Anna Watson, who flew in to help MJ with the pregnancy.
A short time later, Spidey and Chakra check out an abandoned gym, unsure whether Traveller is there or not, though Chakra can feel him. Spidey comments that he doesn't know how much help he can be to a being whose powers are at a near cosmic level. Chakra replies that it was all an illusion and reveals that Traveller has psionic powers, but his primary ability is altering people's perception of reality. She adds that several manifestations he witnessed were the result of technology supplied by Scrier. Spidey asks what Scrier's role is in the whole equation but before Chakra can reveal anything of importance, the Host shows up and attacks them.
Meanwhile, the man known as the Rose and his enforcer Delilah are paid a visit by Scrier, who asks them what their positions are with regards to his proposal to ally his organization and the Rose's. The Rose replies that his European contacts dug up information on Scrier and is organization and he did not like what they found. The Rose explains that his contacts discovered that Scrier is not an individual; it is the name of an entire organization.
While the Rose continues to discuss the information his contacts discovered, Spidey and Chakra are confronted by an army of Scriers. Though they defend themselves admirably, they are soon overwhelmed by Scriers. Thankfully, Peter, wearing a mask and gloves, shows up on the scene to lay a helping hand.
While the battle rages on between Spidey, Chakra, Peter and the Scriers, the Rose reveals further information his contacts discovered about the Scrier organization. The Scrier is a secret cabal inspired by a mystical being who was the inspiration for their costumes. The cult was almost wiped out of existence until an unknown mastermind took over, with dreams of becoming the European version of the Kingpin of Crime. The mysterious new leader honed their fighting skills, espionage techniques, and gave them sophisticated armaments in return. Rose tells Scrier that his organization might be impressive, yet he does not know if they have what it takes to make it in the American market. Scrier replies by threatening Rose, revealing that he knows certain secrets about him. For instance, he knows that the Rose is also known as Richard Fisk, the Schemer, and Blood Rose. The Rose replies that his assumptions are interesting, however, he believes Scrier cannot prove anything. On that note, Scrier leaves. When he returns to the warehouse and informs Gaunt that the Rose has declined the invitation, Gaunt snaps his neck, reiterating once again that their employer absolutely does not tolerate failure.
At the abandoned gym, both Spider-Man and Chakra are able to fight off the Scrier's attack long enough to find Traveller in a containment pod at the bottom of the swimming pool. Spider-Peter frees Traveller, which causes Traveller to go all weird. Tired of being used and manipulated, Traveller uses his mind-bending to take out all the Scriers, weakening himself in the process and even dazing Peter and Ben. Before taking off with Chakra, Traveller warns them that the mastermind behind the whole thing is more powerful than him, more powerful than Scrier. Peter and Ben are not sure what he means but feel that things are about to get worse.

SUMMARY:
In Spider-Man Redemption #2, the story opens with the police arriving on the scene of Janine's murder only to find Spider-Man holding her lifeless body and mumbling something about how Kaine killed her. As the cops move closer, Spidey lashes out at them, which prompts them to draw their weapons. Furious, Spidey tells them that they have no idea who they are up against and that he will find Kaine and kill him. But, before completely losing all his marbles, Ben composes himself and calms down. He then proceeds to check the body of Janine to for clues about Kaine's whereabouts and discovers that it is some kind of construct, upon which a note is attached, telling him to come to the "womb".
Elsewhere, Kaine looks at himself in the mirror and sees the ravages of the clone degeneration in his face; the face of Peter Parker. Kaine dons his specialized costume that slows his degeneration and goes to visit the real Janine, who is being held captive. Janine is frightened of Kaine but Kaine tells her that she has noting to fear, because she is only bait. Reminded of his one true love, Kaine proceeds to kiss Janine who pulls back in disgust.
Spidey arrives at the lab where the Jackal fist cloned him and finds Kaine, who had been waiting for him. Kaine welcomes Ben and starts to talk about his past and how the Jackal tried to destroy him when he discovered that he was flawed. Ben makes the mistake of telling Kaine that he understands him, which only serves to infuriate him even more and prompts him to start smashing Ben's face into the ground, telling him that he has no idea what pain is. As Kaine continues to beat on Ben, he wonders if he desires to see him suffer. He asks himself if he loathes his weakness or his bleeding heart of if he just feels unworthy of him. Kaine knows Ben will retaliate with all his strength, and then he will probably contain his rage and maybe even forgive him. Kaine laughs at the thought of Ben, knowing that he is beyond redemption and forgiveness.
Kaine finally knocks Ben unconscious. When Ben regains consciousness, he discovers that he's been injected with a formula created by Kaine. Kaine explains that it will give Ben a small taste of what it is like to live with cell degeneration. In extreme pain, Ben begs Kaine to stop and finally blacks out. When he regains consciousness, he and Kaine are standing in front of the Parker home in Forest Hills, Queens. Kaine tells Ben that it tears him apart to think of the life he only knows in memory. Kaine grabs Ben and leaves, anguished at losing the opportunity to redeem himself.
When Ben awakens the next morning, he finds himself back in his apartment, his arm throbbing from an antidote Kaine injected while he was passed out. Ben finds the real Janine, sleeping in his bed. He wakes her up and hugs her for what seems like an eternity. Janine tells Ben that they should move away from everyone and everything. Just then, Ben's spider-sense kicks in, warning him of danger. Believing Kaine to be back, Ben grabs hold of Janine and the two of them race out the door, only to find the police waiting for them. More specifically, they are waiting for Janine, who is under arrest for the murder of her father.

SUMMARY:
In Spider-Man Redemption #3, the story opens with Ben Reilly vowing not to lose Janine once again. As she is being transferred to prison to await her trial, Ben dresses in a makeshift costume, to protect both his identities, and stops the patty wagon that is transporting her. He then kidnaps her and, later on, reveals himself to her. They go out to get something to eat at the Daily Grind and plan their future together. Ben reveals that he has money stashed away that they can use to leave right away. Janine comments to Ben that, years ago, all he talked about was coming to New York to have Peter's life. Now that he is in New York, she wonders why he would want to leave. Ben replies that he had the chance to see his Aunt May and now that she is gone and that everyone else he knew is either dead or irrelevant to him, there is nothing left for him in New York.
As they continue thinking about leaving, Janine explains how Kaine, all those years ago, kidnapped her, when she and Ben were in Santa Cruz, and forced her to leave and never come back by threatening to reveal her past. Kaine’s goal was to make Ben think she was dead, that she had been ripped away from him, just as Gwen Stacy head been years earlier. As if on cue, Kaine shows up. Totally infuriated, Ben starts screaming and kicking at Kaine with everything he has. As far as Ben is concerned, Kaine is not just a clone – he is the darkness in his own soul. Before things get out of hands, Janine manages to calm Ben down. Kaine taunts Ben by telling him that he has already become just like him and vice versa. He then mentions that it's all over and before Ben or Janine can react, the Daily Grind explodes.

SUMMARY:
In Spider-Man Redemption #4, the story opens with Kaine remembering when he was "born" and how his creator, the Jackal, rejected him when he discovered that Kaine had a scar, thus was not a perfect clone. This was Kaine's first lesson in how cruel the world is. Back in reality, Kaine rescues all the patrons and employees of the Daily Grind and when asked if there are more people inside, Kaine replies that there are two more, however, he is not going to rescue them, he is going to perish with them. Kaine heads back inside and finds Ben Reilly and Janine injured, though still alive. Ben begs Kaine to let Janine live, as she is not part of their war and does not deserve to die because of that. Ben adds that she's suffered so much at the hands of her father, which is something Kaine, of all people, should be able to relate to. Moments later, Ben's plea seems to sway Kaine and he rescues both of them. As they come to rest on a nearby rooftop, Kaine tells them to go and love each other and try to find happiness. He has one final request, however; for Ben to kill him.
Ben tells Kaine that he won't kill him. However, he has to deliver him to the authorities to be held accountable for his crimes. A battle ensues, in which Ben tries to reason with Kaine, telling him that accepting responsibility for his crimes is the only way to find redemption. Just then, the police arrive on the scene and Kaine attacks them, hoping that they will kill him. As the police prepare to open fire, Ben, having donned a makeshift mask, races over and pulls Kaine to safety. Kaine wonders why Ben saved him again. No other words are exchanged and none are necessary. For the first time, both Kaine and Ben realize that they are the same. Kaine, who spent his whole life trying to destroy Ben's, has saved him, and Ben has done the same for Kaine.
Having witnessed Ben's speech to Kaine, Janine realizes that the only way for things to get better is for her to face her responsibility. Having said that, she surrenders to the authorities. Moments later, Kaine surrenders to the police as well. Kaine believes that Ben showed him the way to take the first step in redeeming his corrupt soul.
Now alone, Ben thinks about everything that has happened, and believes Janine will find her way and that she will be vindicated in the end. He also decides that he will try his best to help Kaine find inner peace. Perhaps telling the judge and prosecutors about the horrible circumstances that made Kaine the way he is will help him attain that goal. In a sense, his greatest enemy would become his greatest advocate. At issue's end, Ben, as Spider-Man, looks down from the rooftop, as Janine is taken into custody. Ben comments that as long as he lives, he will love her and he will always be watching over her, both as Ben Reilly and as Spider-Man.
