HISTORY: Maxwell Markham was originally a professional wrestler known as the Grizzly. His excessive violence in the ring brought him to the attention of Daily Bugle Publisher, J. Jonah Jameson whose crusade in the name of public decency got Markham expelled from his sport. Several years later, Markham met the Jackal (a.k.a. Professor Miles Warren) who provided him with a grizzly bear costume and an exo-skeleton harness, which amplified his strength considerably. Using this newfound strength, Markham set out to get his revenge on Jameson. Fortunately for the latter, Spider-Man came to his rescue. Spider-Man also deduced that the Grizzly's amazing strength was in fact the result of a special harness he was wearing, and knowing his main weakness, he easily defeated him, trashing the exo-skeleton at the same time.

Upon his release from prison, Markham tried to go straight. However, vowing revenge on Spider-Man, he soon joined forces with the Tinkerer, who repaired his damaged harness and patched up the Grizzly suit. Markham eventually encountered Spider-Man again and when the wall-crawler realized that Markham would never regain his self-esteem until he had defeated him, he allowed his opponent to win the battle and bask in the glow of victory. However, nobody believed that the Grizzly could have succeeded where others had failed, especially since Spider-Man was still alive and well. Feeling ridiculed by his peers, the Grizzly joined forces with the Gibbon, the Spot, and the new Kangaroo and together they became the "Spider-Man Revenge Squad".

However, their name did not stick and to their dismay, everybody else started calling them the "Legion of Losers". Trying to make a name for themselves, they captured Spider-Man. However, Grizzly and Gibbon realized that Spider-Man was in fact a good guy (Duh!) and to redeem themselves, they released him and even helped him capture the remaining two members.
