While there, he receives a phone call on his cell phone from a mysterious stranger who claims to know Parker's secret identity as Spider-Man. Peter, of course, claims that the caller is mistaken, until the man insinuates that he's kidnapped Peter's Aunt May. In a panic, Peter frantically swings through the city – sans costume – to May's apartment, only to find the place smashed and ransacked with Aunt May nowhere in sight. As Spider-Man, Peter enlists the help of the Black Cat but she is out of town and won't be back until the next day. As a result, he heads over to the Avengers Mansion, hoping that the Avengers may assist him in his quest. The Avengers would love to help him but they need to know whom they're looking for and Spider-Man feels that telling them may jeopardize his secret identity. Utterly disappointed, he leaves the mansion. His next stop brings him to the Owl's lair where the Owl reveals that super-villains Electro and The Vulture are responsible. Spider-Man tracks them down to a brothel where he first finds Electro. ACT 1: Hanging from the ceiling on a cobweb, Spider-Man confronts Electro, who starts taking off his street clothes to reveal his costume hidden underneath. A battle naturally ensues between the two foes. Meanwhile, Adrian Toomes (a.k.a. The Vulture), who is standing nearby with a large suitcase in hand, begins to run away from the scuffle – to go get his costume which is back at the helmsley – and exits the building by jumping through a window. Before Toomes is able to fly away, Spider-Man spins a web and manages to grab the large suitcase held by Toomes. The suitcase opens up and twenty million dollars are sent flying down to the streets below. Furious, Electro discharges thousands of volts, which blow a gigantic hole in the side of the building and which also send Spider-Man flying across the street. Electro tells Toomes to quickly go get his costume and hurry back so as to take on Spider-Man as a team. Although confused as to why Electro and The Vulture would have been paid twenty million dollars to kidnap a septuagenarian with a cocoa habit, Spider-Man continues to fight to get to the bottom of it. He and Electro trade blows after blows, neither of them hardly ever getting the upper hand. That is until Electro plays dirty and involves innocent people in the midst of their brawl, which Spider-Man is unable to prevent. In one swoop of the hand, Electro murders several bystanders and people in nearby cars by having those cars and nearby trucks crash into each other to create a large heap of twisted burning metal. The explosion rattles Spider-Man and knocks the wind out of him. Confident that Spider-Man is momentarily incapacitated, Electro calls Toomes on his cell phone to inquire about the whereabouts of the latter. Toomes explain that he hasn't made it to the hotel yet since without his wings, he simply floats in the air, and the wind is completely against him there. Electro tells Toomes to get himself down there to help him finish Spider-Man off. At that moment, Spider-Man appears out of nowhere and tackles Electro through the window of a nearby building. He then furiously starts to throw punches after punches until Electro drops to his knees, blood pouring from his every pore. Totally enraged, and neglecting to look around where he's landed, Electro prepares to discharge a massive electrical load. When he does realize where he's landed – a gas and propane supplier building – it is too late. The propane ignites and the building blows up. Amidst the wreckage of the building stands a bruised and battered Spider-Man and to his feet, a really bruised and battered Electro. Spider-Man grabs Electro by the throat and demands that he explains what he's done with his Aunt May, while trying not to reveal too much information about his connection with her so as to not reveal his secret identity. Electro explains that Toomes and him were sent to the Kingpin by the Owl to collect the twenty million dollars (that was in the suitcase) that the Kingpin owed the Owl. However, the fact that the Owl was freshly out of prison and was only reestablishing himself as a major crimelord, Toomes and him decided to collect the money from the Kingpin and disappear with it, hence double-crossing the Owl. When Spider-Man hears this, he realizes that he's been played by the Owl and for a second, stops paying attention to Electro, who uses that opportunity to electrocute Spider-Man. Shaken, Spidey loses his footing and falls out of the building through the gigantic gap caused by the explosion of the gas and propane. He lands several floors below on the hood of a police car, rolls off, and ends up lying in the middle of the street unconscious. ACT 2: Spider-Man is brought into the New York Methodist Hospital, where doctors immediately start operating on him (he has burns and broken bones) and going as far as taking off his mask, not concerned at all for the face underneath the mask; instead simply caring to save his life. Meanwhile, Mary Jane, who Peter told to get out of the city in last issue, is trying to reach Peter on the phone but he isn't at the apartment. While she's leaving a message, her attention is suddenly turned towards the television, where a newsbreak informs her that Spider-Man has been brought into the hospital, courtesy of Max Dillon (a.k.a. Electro). She is utterly terrified. ACT 3: Back at the hospital, a police detective, most likely in charge of investigating the Spider-Man/Electro incident, is angry with the doctors for reporting to the media that Spider-Man was brought into their hospital for treatment. Meanwhile, in Spider-Man's room, which is guarded by cops, Toomes, as The Vulture, crashes through the window, takes a nearby cop out, proceeds to jump on Spider-Man's bed and prepares to kill him. To be continued.
