Marvel Knights: Spider-Man #6 |
WRITER:  Mark Millar
PENCILLER: Terry Dodson COVER BY: Terry and Rachel Dodson INKER: Rachel Dodson STORY TITLE: Venomous - Part Two of Four REVIEW:  Peter Parker wakes up from the battle of his life to find himself broke, badly injured and his Aunt May still missing after a mysterious kidnapping. His wife, Mary Jane refuses to stay in hiding any longer and promises to help him, but their investigations are going nowhere. On top of things, the Daily Bugle is offering 5 million dollars to anybody who can identify the man behind the mask of Spider-Man based on a picture that was taken of him "sans his mask" when he was hospitalized after having been beat up by the Vulture. Having recovered from his injuries, Peter, as Spider-Man goes out web-slinging, hoping to find some clues about May's disappearance. While on patrol, he finds nothing except a drug-addled, rampaging Doctor Octopus and a problem with a pursuing SWAT team he never expected. ACT 1: Spider-Man struggles hard to evade having his mask removed by the encircling SWAT team members but finally manages to escape; in part thanks to the intervention of newfound friend Detective Lamont. ACT 2: Peter meets Mary Jane for lunch and together, they go over a list of active super-villains that may have potentially kidnapped May. Eddie Brock, also known as Venom, shows up at the top of the list. Furthermore, according to information obtained from the Black Cat, the super-villain A-list is getting together for some kind of big auction that night and Eddie Brock appears to be at the heart of it. Whether or not Eddie has anything to do with May’s kidnapping remains a mystery for now. ACT 3: Meanwhile at the offices of the Daily Bugle, normal people dressed in fake Spider-Man costume keep showing up in J. Jonah Jameson's office claiming to be the real thing so as to claim the reward for themselves. JJJ doesn't fall for any of it and throws them out of his office one after the other. Peter shows up and manages to score a few bucks by selling some of his pictures to JJJ. He also finds out that the 5-million dollar reward offered by the Bugle came from an anonymous donor. While there, Peter also bumps into John Jameson, Jonah's son, who is working in Queens for the Department of Social Services and who is planning to start flying again for the air-force if everything goes well. Note: John Jameson is also known as the Man-Wolf. ACT 4: Peter, as Spider-Man, heads over to Riker's Island, where Norman Osborn, a.k.a. the Green Goblin, is imprisoned. Norman is not much help but does suggest to Spider-Man that he ask himself two questions: (1) what was the police doing to Otto Octavius in last issue? And (2) why all of his offices are being burglarized right now? ACT 5: After his less-than-enlightening chat with his arch-nemesis, Spider-Man goes over to the Xavier Institute, home of the X-men, to meet with one of the telepath to try and get some information about May's whereabouts. Rachel Summers, daughter of Scott Summers (a.k.a. Cyclops) and Jean Grey from a parallel future timeline, meets with Spider-Man and using May's old engagement ring, tries to pinpoint her location. Using her powers of telepathy, Rachel reveals to Spidey that May knew her attacker and that he knows him too, although he is different from how he used to be; he is not human anymore. Spider-Man asks Rachel to tell him who it is but Rachel doesn't know. Even worst, Rachel thinks the ring is faulty because it reveals to her that May is dead. ACT 6: Elsewhere, the auction mentioned earlier is about to take place. Criminals of all genres are making their way into an old theater, cleverly called the Ditko Theater. To name a few, the Sandman, Mysterio, the Owl, Mister Fortunato and his son Angelo, the Shocker, the Beetle, and others that, I have to admit, I do not recognize. As they all take their seats, the auction begins and it is revealed that the Venom symbiote is up for bid, starting at ten million dollars. To be continued.
