WRITER:  Mark Millar
PENCILLER: Terry Dodson COVER BY: Terry and Rachel Dodson INKER: Rachel Dodson STORY TITLE: The Last Stand - Part Three of Four REVIEW:  His beloved Aunt May has been kidnapped, his secret identity has been compromised, and now – in hopes of saving his Aunt's life – Peter Parker has been forced to break into Riker's Island prison to free his arch-nemesis, Norman Osborn, a.k.a. the Green Goblin. It appears that Norman is at the heart of a conspiracy involving super humans that dates back more than 60 years, and this secret has put his life at risk. And, on the very night Norman is supposed to be murdered, Spider-Man, with the help of Felicia Hardy, a.k.a. the Black Cat, breaks him out of Riker's... But, as they saying goes, no good deed goes unpunished. Norman betrays Spider-Man and has a group of elite super-villains from Spider-Man's past – The Sinister Twelve – ready to meet the web-slinger just after the breakout…(The members of the Sinister Twelve are: the Green Goblin, the Lizard, the Vulture, the Shocker, Hydro-Man, Boomerang, the Sandman, the Scorpion/Venom, Electro, Hammerhead, Chameleon, and Tombstone Now, Spidey and the Black Cat find themselves surrounded by bloodthirsty psychopaths... ACT 1: Hovering in the air near the rooftop where Mac Gargan – the old Scorpion and now the new Venom – is standing, the Green Goblin is not at all pleased with Gargan's new look. Down below at ground level, Spider-Man and the Black Cat are also quite surprised. The Green Goblin tells Gargan that he was supposed to wear the new Scorpion costume he designed for him and that him becoming Venom was not part of his plan. Gargan tries to reason with the Goblin but the latter tells Gargan that once he murders Spider-Man's pretty little wife, they'll further discuss his defiance. The Goblin then takes his leave and proceeds towards the Parker household. ACT 2: Back on the ground below, Spidey and the Black Cat use that opportunity to attack the Sinister Twelve. Spidey first kicks the Sandman in the face, then he webs up Hydro-Man's mouth. The Black Cat takes care of the Lizard as Spidey moves on to fight the Vulture. Then Spidey subsequently takes out Hydro-Man, the Sandman and the Shocker, while – in the background – the Black Cat takes care of the Lizard and faces off against Electro. Chameleon yells at the others to "hit that clown" and on those words, Gargan/Venom shows up and tackles Spidey into a pile of empty wooden crates. The Black Cat gets distracted when this happens and she is caught off guard by Electro who sends thousands of volts coursing through her body. Hovering above Electro, the Vulture is angry with the latter because he wanted to get revenge on her for what she did to his face a few issues ago. Electro replies that all he has to do is sit tight until she comes around and then he can get his big revenge. The Vulture retorts that she might be brain-damaged after receiving a charge like that and there is no fun in messing her up if she's already brain-damaged. The Shocker intervenes and tells the Vulture to take his anger out on Spider-Man since he's the one who caused him to lose his grandson's money (see Marvel Knights Spider-Man #3 for further details). A few of the other super villains also get involved and tell the Vulture that he can take his shot at Spider-Man once they're done with him. Nearby, while Gargan/Venom holds down Spidey to the ground, he tells him that having the symbiote inside him has given him enough pain and resentment to feed it for a lifetime. He adds that he's going to die tonight and that Mary Jane will also die tonight. On those words, Spidey kicks Gargan/Venom off of him and sends him flying several feet away. Spidey stands up and readies himself to finish off as many of them as he can before they finish him. He is soon knocked back down to the ground when a stream of water hits him in the back, courtesy of Hydro-Man. In that instant, Electro, the Vulture, the Sandman, the Lizard, and Hydro-Man pile on him and start pummeling away. Suddenly, out from the top of a nearby building, the cavalry arrives in the form of Captain America, Iron Man, Daredevil, the Fantastic Four (i.e. The Thing, the Human Torch, Mister Fantastic, the Invisible Woman), and Yellowjacket (i.e. Henry Pym). Daredevil takes care of Venom while Iron Man grabs the Lizard and Hydro-Man and flies off with them to God knows where. The Thing grabs hold of the Shocker and the Sandman and lifts both of them above his head. What he does with them is not seen but one can safely assume that it must have been painful for them. Yellowjacket grabs hold of Boomerang, Hammerhead and the Chameleon while Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman advance upon Electro. All this time, Spidey wonders how they knew where Osborn was meeting him. ACT 3: Miles away, back at the Parker household, Mary Jane Parker hangs up the phone; she's the one who called S.H.I.E.L.D. and told them what was going on. Hence, the folks at S.H.I.E.L.D. called up some reinforcements and they showed up at the docks to help out Spider-Man. Talking to herself out loud, MJ apologizes to Peter for what she had to do but she just had a bad feeling that Osborn would not hold his end of the bargain. Right behind her, the Green Goblin emerges from the shadow and tells her that she’s very clever. He then uses gas on her and she falls unconscious. ACT 4: Back at the docks, Captain America and the others have the situation under control, so Spidey swings away towards his and MJ's apartment. But as he makes his way over there, he is suddenly attacked by Gargan/Venom who tackles him in mid-air. Gargan/Venom and Spidey start falling towards the ground several stories below but Spidey manages to shoot a web-line that snags the side of a building. Their descent is slowed down but Spidey is unable to control their swing and the two of them end up striking the side of a building, breaking an apartment window in the process. The male resident of the apartment takes a gun out and starts shooting at the window. As bullets stream over, Spidey pulls Gargan/Venom down and the two of them once again plunge towards imminent death. That is until Gargan/Venom shoots a bunch of web-lines that snag the buildings surrounding them, creating a huge tangled web. Spidey knows that if Gargan/Venom gives one big twist, the whole thing is going to come down on the pedestrians and vehicles down below. And the idiot does just that. Flabbergasted, Spidey starts shooting and spraying webbing all over the place, trying to catch every falling piece. And he does, to the screams and applause of the crowd at street level. Turning his attention back to Gargan/Venom, he starts beating on the latter and finishes him off by pulling an abandoned building on top of him using well-placed weblines. Again, the crowd is ecstatic. He then quickly swings off towards his apartment building. ACT 5: Meanwhile at Riker's Island Penitentiary in some kind of laboratory, doctors are wondering what is going on outside, as choppers are seen flying around the prison perimeter. One of them replies that Osborn has escaped and the whole place has gone into lockdown. Another asks what they are suppose to do with Doc Ock as he’s primed to "go off" around this time the next night. Suddenly, Ock wakes up and sitting up, he screams out Norman's name. The Doctors quickly inject him with some kind of drug to calm him down and he lies back into his bed. One of the doctors is angry with the other one for shooting his mouth like he did. The other doctor replies that he was asked what was happening out there and he simply answered the question. He adds that he thought Ock was supposed to be under control anyway. The first doctor replies that Doc Ock was programmed with a mission and that they don't want him so doped up he can't remember his own name. He tells the other that he's lucky they don't put him on report for what he just did. At that exact moment, Doc Ock wakes up and violently disposes of all of them using his deadly tentacles. He then escapes. His destination: unknown. ACT 6: Back in the City, Spidey approaches the Brooklyn Bridge/George Washington Bridge – where Gwen Stacy was killed – and locates the Green Goblin hovering above the bridge on his Goblin glider, Mary Jane being held up by the scruff of her shirt (beautiful artwork by the Dodson team). The Goblin speaks: "Look familiar, Mister Parker?". To be continued.
