Peter Parker Spider-Man #27 | |
PENCILLER: Mark Buckingham COVER BY: Kaare Andrews INKER: Dan Green STORY TITLE:  Getting Ahead REVIEW:  ACT 2: Below, everybody is confused about what has just happened. A firefighter on the scene commands his men to move everybody out of that area pronto. As Spider-Man tries to obtain information from the officials present at the scene, he is nearly struck by an enormous flash of lightning. Regaining focus, our hero identifies the source of the electrical surges. It’s coming from the main screen above the square. “There has to be a way to cut off the flow to the screen” thinks Spider-Man. In the midst of all the lightning flashes, Spidey notices a power coupling. ACT 3: Spider-Man, guided by his spider-sense, moves through the flashes and quickly reaches the top of the building, where the surges appear to be originating from. He pulls on the coupling, which turns off the screen. At the same time, a face appears on the screen followed by a message: Spider-Man I require your presence.... The screen turns off. “Stromm?”, Spidey wonders. FLASHBACK: Mendel Stromm, also known as the Robot Master is a former associate of Norman Osborn. Unfortunately for Stromm, Osborn, performed the ultimate takeover by having him committed to the slammer. To pass the time while he was inside, Stromm developed a strain of funky gadgetry and some pretty nifty robots...all designed to blow things up and kill people. ACT 4: Peter knocks on a door and an old lady greets him: Miss Smith. Daphne Smith was Peter’s science teacher in tenth grade and as Peter recalls, she was one of the smartest people he’d ever met. FLASHBACK: He remembers how she could bring an entire class to its knees with laughter while at the same time holding its interest. As well, a unique method of teaching, which she called “creating a spark”. He recalls how he could never tell if that meant the figurative spark in the minds of her students, of if it referred to the huge and deafening explosions that frequently rocked her classroom. Either way, Peter remembers, she really knew how to shake things up. ACT 5: They sit down and start discussing about the recent electrical surges that occurred in Times Squares. Ms. Smith reveals that the available machinery shouldn’t have been able to carry the necessary current. Peter replies by saying that he noticed how the electrical equipment remained intact, despite the high voltage involved. She compliments him on his understanding and suggests that he should look at the source of the surges first. She also suggests that Peter should investigate the electrical company who is surely trying to pinpoint the anomaly, as they speak. Peter agrees and then asks her if she’s heard about the death of Mary Jane. She nods in grief and offers him some comfort saying how much M.J. was such a sweet kid. Peter describes how he feels she’s still here but at the same time, realizes that it’s just because he wants her to be; and that all his friends keep telling him it’s time to let go and how he doesn’t want to. The only thing she can say in response to that is “then don’t”. ACT 6: As the day continues, reports of electrical failures come in from as far as Long Island and Bridgewater, Connecticut. Innumerable traffic accidents take place as entire networks of signals seem to be affected. Both the governors of New York and Connecticut declare a state of emergency until the problem can be brought under control. Authorities advise users of all credit card and automated banking machines to discontinue use until the problem is resolved. ACT 7: Peter, with the assistance of Randy Robertson and computer pal, Shea hack into the electrical company main frame computer and access the electrical grid control. After a few minutes of hacking, Shea pinpoints the source of the electrical surges: one of the electrical company relay stations. Peter compliments Shea by calling him a “virtual genius” and leaves for the station. ACT 8: Upon his arrival at the station, Peter/Spider-Man admits to have no idea of what’s going on. His spider-sense appears to be buzzing but with all the electricity playing havoc with it, it’s difficult to tell what to expect. As he makes his way into the station, his spider-sense suddenly kicks in overdrive as flashes of lighting strike from everywhere around him. Luckily, he manages to find cover inside a nearby shed. ACT 9: Spider-Man is now stuck in the shed, so as a last measure of hope, he decides to go down. He makes his way into tunnels surrounded by electrical cables that seem to be alive. As he ponders about that thought, the cables unexpectedly attack him. Using his spider-strength, Spider-Man succeeds to break free from the assault. He encounters more killing machines but again, he manages to overcome them. Finally, he reaches a hull door, which he breaks by driving his foot through it. “What say we make this face to – face..? In the middle of the room, Stromm’s head, mounted on a pedestal, cables and machines surrounding him, keeping him alive... TO BE CONTINUED... |
