Peter Parker Spider-Man #9 (107) | |
WRITER:  Howard Mackie
PENCILLER: John Romita Jr. COVER BY: John Romita Jr. and Scott Hanna INKER: Scott Hanna STORY TITLE:  Shadows of the Past REVIEW:  Eddie Brock, a.k.a. Venom, has escaped from prison and is making his way towards New York City. ACT 1: The bowery, on New York City's lower East side. Moe Edwards, a homeless man, is drinking his life away, when he is suddenly engulfed in a black substance, which is revealed to be the symbiotic half of the super villain known as Venom. Moe begs the symbiote to release him. Strangely, the symbiote lets go of him and vanishes through a sewer grate; not before saying the names "Brock" and "Parker". ACT 2: Elsewhere, at the Fifth Avenue Penthouse of Peter Parker, Peter is talking to Aunt May about the recent phone calls Mary Jane has been getting from what appears to be a stalker. Coincidently, during their conversation, the phone starts ringing. Neither Peter nor May pick up the phone. Speculating - without proof - that the stalker is Eddie Brock, who recently escaped from prison, Peter switches to his Spider-Man duds and goes out web slinging in the night, in search of Eddie. ACT 3: A short time later, at the home of private investigator Arthur Stacy, Spider-Man enlists the help of Arthur to find out where Eddie Brock is hiding. Unbeknownst to Spider-Man, the alien symbiote is following him, hidden in the shadows. ACT 4: A short time later, back at his penthouse, Peter is soundly sleeping when the phone suddenly rings, awaking him. He picks up the phone and is greeted by the operator who informs him that all lines are down where MJ is vacationing due to a severe tropical storm, and that it is the reason why he was unable to reach her earlier. As Peter speaks to the operator, he notices, from the corner of his eye, that the symbiotic half of Venom is clinging to the ceiling of the bedroom. To make matters worse, Aunt May enters the room to ask Peter if it is MJ on the phone. Afraid that his aunt may collapse if she sees the symbiote, Peter nonchalantly pushes her out of the room, pretending that he has to change so as to take her out to dinner. Back in the room, he confronts the symbiote and asks it where Eddie is. The symbiote replies that Eddie is gone and that it needs to merge with Peter. Peter tells the symbiote to stay away from him and it does (strangely), leaving through the window. Peter slips his Spider-Man costume on so as to follow it but at that exact moment, the doorbell rings. He heads into the living room to find out who is at the door; it is Jill Stacy. She tells Peter that she just got a telegram from Mary Jane which said that she is coming back home. Jill suggests big time groveling when MJ arrives to which Peter replies that he was planning on it anyways. Jill adds that Peter is reminding her of her father who was grouchy when she left the house because he found something out for Spider-Man and he can't figure out how to get in touch with him. ACT 5: A short time later, Spider-Man meets with Arthur Stacy, who provides him with the address of Eddie Brock's apartment. Again, Spider-Man is unaware that the symbiotic half of Venom is still following him. Elsewhere at a single room occupancy hotel near the East River, Eddie Brock prays for an end to the relentless pain which is his life. Eddie seems to be suffering from his separation from the alien symbiote. At that moment, Spider-Man enters the room via the window. Eddie is infuriated with Spider-Man, whom he blames for everything that has ever happened to him. He swings a chair at Spidey, which the latter breaks apart with the simple swift of a hand. Spidey grabs Eddie by the throat and lifts him up inches from the ground. He asks Eddie why he has been torturing his wife by making those threatening phone calls. Eddie is confused at Spidey's allegations and it seems that he truly doesn't know what Spidey is talking about. Eddie adds that he doesn't seem to remember who is under the mask ever since the alien symbiote has been ripped from him back in the Spider-Man: The Venom Agenda one-shot. Suddenly, the symbiotic half appears at the window and attacks them. Eddie runs for his life, not wanting to merge with it, while Spidey fights off the symbiote. In a moment of carelessness, Spidey gets hit hard in the head by the symbiote and loses his grip on it. The symbiote immediately jumps after Eddie, who throws himself out of the window. Both Eddie and the symbiote disappear in the Hudson River. Spider-Man scours the river and its surrounding banks for hours until exhaustion overwhelms him and he leaves the scene. ACT 6: Hours after Spider-Man is gone, Venom emerges from the river. Eddie Brock and the alien symbiote are one once again. To be continued.
