PREVIOUSLY: In Spectacular Spider-Man #204, the super-villain known as Tombstone resurfaces in New York City and immediately makes his presence known by sending Hammerhead packing and taking over his criminal empire. He then applies for a position on the council of gangs but his application is rejected by the council because of one influential member going by the name of Nick Kaska. Furious, Tombstone hashes out a plan to take over as leader of the council. He and his henchmen head over to Kaska's club to rob its occupants and make an impression on Kaska that he means business. During the battle that ensues, two of Kaska's lieutenants dig out a rocket launcher to try and take down Tombstone. Though Tombstone is shaken up from the blasts, he manages to blow up a nearby gas main, which creates an explosion that levels the whole building. Web-slinging not far from there, Spider-Man hears and sees the explosion so he heads towards the club to further investigate. At the same time, police cars, fire trucks and ambulances arrive on the scene of the explosion. Wanting to leave the scene before getting caught, Tombstone tries to hijack one of the ambulances but one man stands in his way: Flash Thompson.

In Spectacular Spider-Man #205, Spider-Man arrives just in time to save Flash Thompson from getting killed by Tombstone. Unfortunately, Tombstone is able to get away. The following day, Peter/Spider-Man's relationship with Felicia Hardy, a.k.a. Black Cat takes a turn for the worse when she confronts him about not telling her that her boyfriend (i.e. Flash) was sent to the hospital by Tombstone (Spidey is forced to reveal this part). Elsewhere, Tombstone shows up uninvited at a meeting of the council of gangs to claim his seat on the council. Nick Kaska gives Tombstone an ultimatum: if he manages to kill Spider-Man, he can get a seat on the council; Tombstone agrees, though reluctantly. Later on, at an abandoned warehouse, Tombstone and his henchmen are readying themselves to track down Spider-Man (to kill him) when Black Cat shows up and crashes their party. Tombstone easily takes care of her and prepares to kill her but Spider-Man – who had been following Black Cat – swings down just in time to save her hide. A battle ensues between Tombstone and Spidey and the fight is taken outside the warehouse and the two of them end up in the river. At issue's end, Tombstone is the only one to resurface, holding Spider-Man's mask in his hands.

This is where this issue picks up.

REVIEW: Tombstone basks in the glory of having defeated Spider-Man but his moment of pride is cut short when Black Cat, who has regained consciousness, attacks him and his henchmen. She is able to take two of them out but Tombstone is too formidable a foe to take on her own so she dives into the river in search of Spidey. Tombstone and his men use the opportunity to flee the scene. While searching for Spidey, whom she now realized would have resurfaced if he weren't dead, Black Cat starts to struggle for air and is afraid to go back up for air since Tombstone and his men are probably waiting to gun her down. Just then, a hand wraps around her arm and pulls her up to the surface: Spider-Man is not dead after all. Spidey hoists her up on the wharf where he gets an earful from Black Cat who still doesn't forgive him for lying to her about Flash and still wants Tombstone dead. Having lost his mask to Tombstone, Spidey stands up and takes Black Cat's mask off and puts it on. The Cat is taken aback and asks him what he is doing to which Spidey replies that he has a secret identity to protect whereas everybody and the next guy knows that Felicia Hardy and the Black Cat are one and the same. Felicia replies that Flash doesn't know to which Spidey replies that perhaps Flash only reads the sports section. He adds that she doesn't have what it takes to go against Tombstone by herself, which is whey she should stay away from him and go see to Flash. Having said that, Spidey takes off into the night.

Peter/Spidey enters the Parker apartment through the skylight where he runs into his wife, Mary Jane, who just got off the phone with her agent. MJ tells Peter that she has great news and explains that she's found them an apartment on the upper East Side. She goes on explaining that one of her agent's other clients is moving to the Coast for a series and has to dump her place in a hurry, which they can move in on the following Wednesday if they want it. Peter is resilient to say yes at first, fearing that it will cost them too much money but MJ convinces him otherwise and he agrees. He then tells her that he needs to go and find Black Cat before she gets herself killed. He shouldn't have a problem finding her since he snagged her with a spider-tracer.

Tombstone arrives at the council of gangs to claim his seat and shows them the mask of Spider-Man. Outside the window, Black Cat watches on. Nick Kaska doesn't believe that Tombstone killed Spider-Man and accuses him of having his girlfriend sown together a fake Spider-Man mask. Totally infuriated, Tombstone demolishes the table in front of them and advances towards Kaska. Kaska yells for the others (who are armed) to kill Tombstone but their bullets ricochet off his impervious skin. Tombstone manages to grab hold of Kaska and throw him out the window. On the other side of the window, Black Cat is unable to stop Kaska from falling down. Thankfully, Spider-Man arrives in the nick of time and grabs the man before he hits the pavement. He drops the man off on the rooftop, where Black Cat confronts him about following him. Totally annoyed with her insistence to get revenge on Tombstone for what he did to Flash, Spidey webs her up to a nearby chimney. He then proceeds to make his way back a few floors down to take care of Tombstone. He crashes through a window and enters the boardroom, where a battle is already taking place between Tombstone and his men and other members of the council of gangs. Spidey joins into the battle.

Back on the rooftop, Black Cat manages to set herself free from the webbing and she makes her way down to the council boardroom. The battle between Tombstone and Spidey continues on. Using his trusty spider-sense, Spidey dodges Tombstone's attack. When Spidey finally manages to punch Tombstone with all his might, Tombstone barely budges and simply shrugs it off. He then tackles Spidey through a window and the two of them start falling towards the concrete pavement several floors down below. Spidey tries to slow their descent with a web-line but Tombstone prevents him from doing so. With Tombstone at the bottom, the two of them smash into the pavement, which crumbles under the impact. Unfazed and unscathed, Tombstone pushes Spidey off of him and proceeds to punch him in the face and in the gut. Unable to withstand any more punches, Spidey jumps out of harm's way and lands on a nearby wall. Realizing that he only has once chance to defeat Tombstone, he starts webbing his hand, creating some kind of webbed boxing glove, so as to put everything into one punch. Tombstone is growing impatient and yells at Spidey to come down or else he'll bring him down. Spidey jumps down from his higher position and using the momentum of his decent, punches Tombstone with all his might. Amazingly, Tombstone is still standing and makes fun of Spidey, calling his attempt pathetic. Suddenly however, the signal finally reaches his brain and Tombstone falls to the ground; he is knocked out. Seeing what Spidey did to Tombstone, the henchmen give themselves up.

The unconscious body of Tombstone is wheeled into a waiting patty wagon while his henchmen are handcuffed. On a nearby rooftop, Spider-Man and Black Cat watch on. Spidey tells her that him stopping Tombstone is a payback for what he did to Flash. Black Cat doesn't think so and accuses him of using her and, more importantly, spitting on everything she told him that was important to her. Spidey tries to answer back but Black Cat continues on her rant and tells him that she understands he was hurt after what happened to Harry and then Flash but that did not give him the right to treat her like dirt, even if it wasn't his intent. As she swings away, she tells him not to push his friends away, because someday, when he needs them, he'll realize that he doesn't have any friends at all.

The end...for now.

PREVIOUSLY: J. Jonah Jameson takes Lance Bannon, Joy Mercado, Gloria Grant and Robbie Robertson out to lunch at a nearby burger joint. This proves to be a bad decision on Jonah's part because, once the whole restaurant finds out that the five of them are working for the Daily Bugle, the patrons start to scoff at the Daily Bugle and its anti-Spider-Man editorial. Furious, Jonah storms out of the restaurant. That night, Jonah never returns home so his wife, Marla calls Robbie Robertson to seek his help. When Robbie explains to her what happened earlier at the restaurant, she realizes that Jonah might be doing something really stupid.

REVIEW: J. Jonah Jameson is walking along the docks when a thug, knife in hand, confronts him and demands that he gives him his valuables. Jameson agrees to give him his watch as long as the thug answers his question, which is whether or not he reads the Daily Bugle. The thug starts to laugh and tells Jonah that he wouldn't even wipe the blood off his knife with it. Totally infuriated, blood boiling in his veins, Jonah punches the thug out.

A few hours later, Jonah is drowning his sorrows in alcohol at a nearby tavern sitting on the docks. The bartender stops serving him drinks, as it is closing time and because he thinks Jonah has had enough, so Jonah asks him what he thinks of the Daily Bugle. The bartender replies that he thinks it is okay to which Jonah replies sarcastically that he must be an expert. The bartender replies that he did four years of journalism school at Syracuse and that he doesn't have an opinion but he adds that his old professor would roll over in his grave if he saw something like the Daily Bugle passing for a newspaper. The bartender turns around to put a few glasses on the shelf and when he turns back around, Jonah has left.

Jonah stands at the end of the dock and seems to contemplate suicide.

To be continued.
