WRITER:  Samm Barnes
PENCILLER: Scott Eaton COVER BY: Greg Land INKER: Cam Smith STORY TITLE:  Sins Remembered: Sarah's Story - Part Two REVIEW:  Peter Parker recently learned of a secret affair between Gwen Stacy, his late girlfriend, and Norman Osborn, the Green Goblin, during which Gwen became pregnant. Osborn arranged for her to give birth to their twins in France. These twins – Sarah and Gabriel – were now fully grown, the Goblin formula in their blood resulting in superhuman strength, but also in the twins aging extremely prematurely. After Peter informed the twins about the truth of their parentage, Gabriel became violent, eventually injecting himself with Goblin serum and becoming the Gray Goblin. After being shot by policemen and receiving a blood transfusion from Peter, Sarah shot her brother rather than letting him harm the man who saved her life. Gabriel's whereabouts are currently unknown. Weeks later, Peter received a phone call from a doctor in Paris, informing him that Sarah was hospitalized after trying to commit suicide. He left immediately for France, feeling responsible for Sarah's well being. Peter chose to travel alone rather than with his wife, Mary Jane, who volunteered to go along with him. When Peter arrived at the hospital, Sarah informed him that she was not trying to kill herself, but rather she regularly takes an enormous amount of pills to stave off the pain of her accelerated aging. Sarah takes Peter back to the Stacy Estate, where, unbeknownst to Mary Jane, Peter has reluctantly decided to stay while in France. Meanwhile, a mysterious man seems to be following Sarah and Peter, tracking their every move. This is where this issue picks up. ACT 1: Peter is snooping around the Osborn Mansion/Stacy Estate, looking at some of the memorabilia that Norman Osborn has collected over the years. Peter is amazed with everything but realizes that even if Norman had everything money could offer, he never had a decent relationship with his son, Harry, who succumbed to the Goblin formula back in Spectacular Spider-Man #200. After a quick recap where we see a perfect example of the tumultuous relationship between Norman and Harry, Sarah shows up and starts telling Peter about her childhood and how Norman used to treat her and Gabriel – although she keeps a few "key moments" to herself. Sarah then asks Peter to spend the day with her so that they can have a picnic together and visit Paris. Peter reluctantly agrees. ACT 2: Sarah is in her bedroom getting ready to go out with Peter and she's talking on the phone with a man named Yves about a debt that her brother, Gabriel, owes to a certain Mister Duprés. All the while, she is counting stacks of money spread out over the table in front of her. She tells Yves that she doesn't know about all the things that Gabriel was involved with and that she doesn't want to know. She tells him that she has the money and that she'll meet him at the usual place. She then hangs up the phone, grabs her pill bottles and swallows close to a dozen pills of different sizes and shapes. Then she stands still for a moment and looks at herself in the mirror. Suddenly, her reflection in the mirror springs to life – probably an hallucination caused by all the pills – and it tells her that she is a fool and that Peter loved her mother, not her. Sarah grabs a hairbrush and smashes it into the mirror. ACT 3: Back in New York City, Mary Jane is paying a visit to Aunt May and is discussing the fact that Peter has forgotten to call her. May tries to reassure her that everything is all right but MJ has a bad feeling that Peter might be in danger. As well, she is not comfortable with the thought of losing her man to a memory, since Sarah is the spitting image of her late mother. Having said that, MJ tells May to tell Peter that she left for Paris if he calls, and she takes off. ACT 4: Back in Paris, Peter and Sarah are sitting down at a café, enjoying some lattés and each other. Unbeknownst to either of them, they are being watched by two individuals in a nearby car. While one of them takes pictures, the other is on the cell phone relaying some information about Peter to whoever is at the other end of the line. Once Peter and Sarah are done their lattés, they continue their tour of Paris. Meanwhile, at Charles De Gaulle Airport, MJ's flight has just landed. ACT 5: Peter and Sarah make their way into the subway system to catch a train ride back to the mansion. Strangely, everybody else leaves the subway platform when the two of them show up. Peter can't shake the feeling that something is just not right but Sarah tells him that he is just being paranoid. Sarah then tells him that someone has been trying to reach her on her cell phone and that she is going to go back up to see if she can get a clearer signal. She leaves Peter standing there and heads back up. Suddenly however, Sarah voluntarily takes a wrong turn and ends up face-to-face with Yves, the man she spoke with on the phone earlier. Sarah tells him that she is going to need twice as much next time but Yves replies that it's getting too risky, especially with Duprés threatening to come down on her hard. Sarah replies that "she is not afraid of Duprés" just as Duprés' goons emerge from the shadows, telling her that "she should be". Yves takes off running like a chicken with his head cut off while Duprés' men encircle Sarah. The lead goon grabs the bag of money Sarah had just given Yves – who dropped it when he took off – and tells her that he's going to put it on the interest that's being accumulated on her brother's debt. He then proceeds to take from Sarah the bag Yves had given her but Sarah fights back by pulling on her end of the bag. The bag rips apart and its content falls all over the floor: dozens of pill bottles. Sarah falls to her knees, trying to pick up the pill bottles. The lead goon steps on her hand and tells her that she'll get her pills when they get the rest of the money Gabriel owes them. One of the other goons pulls out a large knife and tells her that since she's probably going to see her brother before they do, they're going to leave a "message" with her, one he can't miss. Sarah boldly replies to "bring it on". ACT 6: Back on the subway platform, Peter is impatiently waiting for Sarah when a couple guys come running by, screaming for help, yelling that "there is a fight up there". Peter heads up the stairs and finds Sarah kicking Duprés' goons' butts. He tells her she should have called for help but she replies that she didn't need his help, that she is well capable of taking care of herself. Peter replies that he "can see that" and that he hears their ride coming. Sarah replies that she can hear it too but doesn't know how they're going to get there, as they have to go through Duprés' goons. Peter grabs Sarah, shoots a web-line at the ceiling and swings over to the subway platform, right in from of everybody. As they land on the platform, Sarah asks Peter why he showed off his super-powers in front of everybody. Peter replies that nobody in Paris knows who he is, and asks her to explain why those guys were after her. Having made their way into the train, she replies that they were trying to steal their picnic baskets but Peter doesn't buy it. He knows there is more to it. As they silently sit in the train, Sarah starts having hallucinations again, just as they coincidently arrive near a train station. Terrified, she tells Peter they're going to get off here because she doesn't like the way a nearby little girl is looking at her. So they get down from the train and head over to Père Lachaise Cemetery, to have their picnic (Note from the reviewer: I've had the chance to visit this cemetery and it is astonishing in its own creepy way). Sarah directs Peter towards the grave of Abelard and Heloise, two people brought together by their passion, then separated by her uncle's vengeance. Peter asks if their story has an happy ending to which Sarah replies that Abelard was castrated and Heloise ended up in a nunnery where she died of a broken heart. Peter asks Sarah if she has fascination with death and whether or not he should be worried about it. Sarah replies that she doesn't, that everyone has to die. She adds that she will die before Peter and Peter asks why she says that. Sarah replies that it is inevitable: even with his blood flowing into her veins, she is still aging three or four times the normal rate. She adds that soon she will be at this cemetery and he (Peter) can come visit her. Suddenly, her cell phone rings so she excuses herself (walking away from Peter) and takes the call. However is at the other end of the line tells Sarah that Mary Jane has arrived in Paris. Sarah tells the person at the other end that they should have stopped her because it is dangerous, "très" dangerous. At that moment, a sniper appears to be aiming a rifle at Peter's head from somewhere in the cemetery. To be continued.
