Ever since I first heard the song "Last Rockers" on the Punk Generation compilation
(it's live, which I personally think sounds better than the other version
but.....) Vice Squad has been one of my favorite bands. They formed in early 1979
in Bristol with Beki Bondage on vocals, Shane Baldwin on drums, Dave Bateman on
guitar, and Mark Hambley on bass. Their debut EP was "Last Rockers" which was
released in the beginning of 1981. The band had some doubts about selling all 1500 copies
but as it turned out it was a hit which sold 20, 000 and the single shot to the
top of the indie charts. The band was getting a lot of good press after supporting bands such as the Ruts and the Damned, as
well as for Beki's fondness of leather outfits and whips. In may of 1981
the band released the "Resurrection" EP, which sold just as well as "Last Rockers"
Along with Simon Edwards of Heartbeat Records the band formed their own label
Riot City. The Success of "Resurrection" attracted the attention of EMI and the
band in a joint production with Riot City. The first single for EMI, "Out
Of Reach" went to number 68 in the UK Top 75 to become the bands first
(and sadly only) hit single. Pretty good considering it was only rehearsed
in a nearby pub the day before recording. Their first LP "No Cause For Concern" was produced
by the band themselves in three days they had off while touring. Near the beginning
of 1983 Beki left the band and was replaced by Lia on vocals. Another new addition
was Sooty on guitar who had been the bands former roadie. After Beki left the band
was immediately dropped by EMI and their next record "You'll Never Know" featuring
the new line up broke away from their usual punk style and went in a more rock
and roll direction. The band decided that by now they could decently play their instruments
and they might as well make the most of it.
