Daring Diva-D's Concert Page!

WOOHOO!!! Welcome to my page. Here you will read some reviews and see some pics of concerts I've had the opportunity to see in the past. I used to do a lot of entertainment writing for the University College of the Cariboo's student newspaper, the OMEGA. So here you'll be able to read some of my published reviews and hopefully soon I can get some pics from some of the concerts to add onto this page. So if you're thinking of checking out some of these singers/bands/artists of many forms, then here might be a good place to start. I'll be adding links on this page to the bands featured. Please e-mail me to let me know if any of the links provided are no longer valid. Thanks and enjoy!

ALABAMA CONCERT REVIEW

By Dina L. Salvatore

You can take the cowboy out of the country, but you can't take the country out of the cowboy. The quantity of country music lovers was apparent Saturday night at Sport Mart Place. Cowboy hats spotted the audience at the Alabama concert with guests The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Diane Chase. The coliseum was as full as if it were the Blazers playing in the Memorial Cup!

Canadian country star, Diane Chase, opened up the concert with about four original songs. A talented guitarist accompanied her while the best song she sang was called "Taking Back my Heart". All her songs seemed to have an odd key change that didn't seem necessary. Her CD probably sounds better than she does live.

Next in line, and the best part of the entire concert, was the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band playing a bunch of their hits from over the past 35 years! This being part of their Reunion Tour, the original founding members, Jeff Hanna and Jimmie Fadden, were joined by Jimmy Ibbotson, Bob Carpenter, and John McEuen.

Highlights of the NGDB were when John McEuen, violin and banjo player extraordinaire, told the audience that this was his first ever visit to Kamloops. He said that he liked Kamloops very much and if he lived here he would own two businesses that he thought would be successful here. He said he'd own a taxidermy business and a veterinarian clinic, so as he put it, "No matter what, you'll get your dog back!" Other highlights included the amazing Jimmie Fadden on drums and harmonica, even playing both at the same time, and the all time favorite song, Fishin' in the Dark. After the NGDB's set was finished, the audience hooted and hollered, jumping up and down and clapping madly for an encore in which the band conceded to playing two more songs.

After a short set change break, Alabama came out to a somewhat enthusiastic crowd. This was Alabama's first visit to "Kamloops, British Columbia" as lead vocalist, Randy Owen told the audience. What a charismatic guy Owen and the rest of Alabama were. A full piece band, including a brass section, three female backup singers, great lights and good sound, Alabama rocked the night away with their blend of rock and country music that has been so popular for longer than some us college kids have been alive.

Owen even brought up an older lady from the front row so that her husband could take a picture of her with Alabama! Owen told the husband that he was saving his hide for something the husband did earlier to the wife concerning taking pictures at the concert. Owen even received a rose from someone in the audience. "I love roses," he said as he engaged the crowd in singing and hand clapping along to the music.

This superstar band was engaging and most enjoyable. All in all, the concert given by Alabama, NGDB, and Diane Chase rocked!
