History
The society was founded in 1996 by Lisa Conway and Pamela Glynn. San Francisco and Los Angeles had societies, San Diego should as well, right? So here we were. We had a society, now what should we do with it? Workshops of course! We need Lindy Hoppers if this thing was gonna fly!
The very first workshop we did was in 1996 with Bernard of Hollywood and Josie Say. Believe it or not, it was held in a coffee house. Twelve people attended! Boy...that was a long time ago! But the dance couldn't survive on workshops alone...Thus...
The story of the Bora Bora Room, Hanalei Hotel Summer 1997
We had to find a place to go on a regular basis. The Casbah and Tio Leo's once a month was just not cutting it. Then it happened. It jumped out at us from the Reader. "Swing on Friday nights in the Bora Bora room of the Hanalai Hotel". What? We'd never heard of the place. But there we were that Friday night. Just us and the promoters. What a sad start huh? Don't worry, this story has a sad, but happy, ending. The good news is that we convinced the promoters that everyone wanted to lindy hop and thus began sponsoring lessons there and advising on bands. Oh...the first class was sad. Three people. Three months later the place was cookin'. It was the spot to be. They brought down the hottest bands around. The dance floor was small but it didn't matter. Everything was right with the world until the wrecking ball came in. The Bora Bora Room was replaced by the lobby of the hotel in September 1997. But we had five glorious months.
Life after the Hanalei
The clubs may not have wanted us on a regular basis, but the kids want to lindy! We threw ourselves into workshops. Catrine Ljunggren was our first truly large workshop. Boy was I scared. But we got 65 people to show up!
Next was Lennart Westerlund, then Rob & Diane from San Francisco. Peter Loggins & Lisa Ferguson....Alicia and Minn...Bernard and Josie...too many to name. Each time the workshops grew in size. This was too big for two people to handle.
The next step...a board of directors...so let's meet 'em!

Current Plans
We plan to continue to hold workshops every two months. We also plan to hold free membership dances once a quarter. Also in the works is a very large philanthropic event to be held next year! But we need your help. Please consider joining the San Diego Lindy Hop Society and keep the dance alive!
You too can become a member of the San Diego Lindy Hop Society. The following are a list of benefits you will receive. Please note that there are two levels of membership. All proceeds go back into SDLHS events and not into the pockets of the board of directors. This is a non-profit organization!
