Pipher, Mary, Ph.D. Hunger Pains. Ballantine Books, 1995.

Eating disorders are the tragic fallout of a culture which idealizes and glamorizes thinness and appearance rather than our individual gifts. Self-worth and thinness are inextricably linked. According to Pipher, the media and our culture of thinness is much to blame for society's emphasis on looks, and the detrimental effect it has on our body images. She offers sound advice and solutions to the eating disorder behaviors. She gives us hope that recovery is possible, is within our reach if we are willing to change our value systems. Pipher's message is that once we can start valuing our special qualities and abilities over our looks, we are well on our way to happiness, tolerance, and a full life.
