X-8: MUD PAINTINGS
1981-1988

Downtown Los Angeles:

X-8 began collecting adobe dirt from such California areas as Mission Viejo, Riverside and the Mojave Desert.

Using a technique that turned the dirt into mud and affix it permanately to canvas allowed him to bring "nature" into the city.

The pieces, often diptychs and triptychs, have been described as "strong and silent".

Use Of Blood and Other Fluids

Blood, saliva, and/or urine would sometimes be mixed within the mud works. Though unconventional in modern society, these materials have been part of the creative process since prehistoric times.

It was felt that this created a more 'balanced' work by binding natural elements between nature and man himself.

These mediums would also be used in later figurative works.
