Dull answer: The group started in a dead news group called AFOS (Alt.Fan.Oksana-bayul.Small-tits) Around 1/98 the "net gods" started filtering binary (picture) posts in non-binary groups. The group moved to ABIF (Alt.Binaries.Images.Fun), the elders realized that we would have to move like nomads all the time. With the help form Nail, Keith and others a new group was requested and started hence Alt.Binaries.Images.Afos-Fans ", or "ABIA-F" for short.
