GEE BEE Model Y Super Sportster Page

Last Updated 3/24/99

Below are photos of my 25% scale Gee Bee Model Y Super Sportster in several phases of construction. The airplane is being built from a Northwest Hobby Technologies kit. It is all foam construction which is new to me so hopefully I'll learn something. The model has a 90" wingspan and is 66" in length making it perfect for the USRA's overall 156" rule for the Thompson Trophy class. It will be powered by the same Aerrow Q100XL 6.0 cubic inch engine that has been modified by Ken Laski that I had previously in the model Z. I plan to cover the plane with Stits cloth covering for scale realism and the incredible strength I have heard it provides. I have just opened the kit on Saturday March 20 and I want to have it in the air by the middle of May so.... Here we go...............

This photo shows what the overall kit came with. As you can see the fuselage and all flight surfaces are foam. The kit came with excellent quality hardwoods and balsawoods, hardware, fiberglass cowl & wheel pants, fiberglass cloth, and Northwest's own foam bond glue.

More photos to follow in the upcomming weeks....Stay tuned

Thanks for your interest in my Gee Bee Y project!
