The Frostbite Opening

This information on the Frostbite Opening was sent to me by a Chess Historian -- AD of Oz -- with whom I am playing e-mail chess and lives in Austrailia and works at the Univesity of Sydney. [apalmer@postbox.library.usyd.edu.au] The names of the participants are spelled out phonetically to get an idea of the meaning of their real names.

When Ima Gonna (Italy) lost to Soyathortyagotmi (Japan) in 1647 the scene was set for a challenge to the World Chess Championship held by Alaskan - Eyeisfrozen. The Match [1649] was played in Venice, Italy before a packed Gondala - in fact the match was actually ON the Gondala (that was why it was packed).

The opening move of Eyeisfrozen was the famous 'frostbite' opening. This move was pawn to a3....hence the name (because anyone playing this move would have to be suffering from something).

As Soyathortyagotmi stood up to ponder a reply his head hit an arch of a canal bridge and he fell unconcious into the canal - this had occured because Eyeisfrozen steered the Gondala towards the bridge with these bad intentions in mind.

As a result of Soyathortyagotmi's untimely swim the match was declared null and void (which is exactly what onlookers had originally thought of the game anyway). The Championship Committee decided to leave a warning for future chess games on the canals. On each arch was erected the sign which conveyed a warning...
