Text Box: The watering systems seem to be working very well. The Dutch Industries windmill at Bryon Mailer’s has been of interest to many people and seems to be working exceptionally well.
The horn fly trap was used again this year. Ralph Maull is the producer that is letting us do project work with his cattle. Ralph is happy with the way the horn fly trap is working. We found that between mature cattle and yearlings, it seems that the yearlings bother the horn fly trap more than the mature cattle did.
Sage control seems to be an issue that everyone needs to recognize. Over the years sage has started taking over the pastures and producers are looking for answers for what might work to decrease the amount of sage in their pastures. We have been working with Grazon and 2,4-D to determine whether these products will help and if they are economical in controlling sage.
Text Box: The silage varieties were seeded on May 28 of this year we had good results although they may seem a little high, they are still comparable.
The perennial forages that we seeded did not turn out. We are not sure of the reasons why these varieties are not germinating very well, but we hope they will survive over winter and we will give them another chance.
Cow Supplementation is going well. It is not complete yet , it will run for another 2 months or so. The cows and calves at this project are looking good. Its hard to tell the differences in the two groups of cattle. The cows were weighed at the beginning of the project and will be weighed when they come off the pasture, so we hope to see the differences between the groups at that time.
