Multiformat Stereo Viewer
Multiformat Stereo Viewer
(Realist, 2x2x2 horizontal or vertical format, and Superslides)
The lenses are double 36mm dia x 94 mm focal length achromats. The resulting optic is
36mm dia x 50mm FL. The results with Realist and 2x2 slides are superb. The
lenses have slight pincushion distortion which is most noticable when
viewing superslides. Thanks to the large lens diameter the entire slide
can be seen even if you wear glasses.
The lenses are mounted in white PVC holders made for me by Mark Robson
from plumbing adapters. The box is a previously used project box from
Radio Shack.

This viewer is a prototype. I hope to do something nicer eventually,
but it works so well it may be a long time. The viewer is fixed focus
and fixed interocular spacing. I don't find this to be a problems thanks
to the large lens diameter. But, if you have missmounted slides where the
infinity spacing is too large you can't make it easier to view by adjusting
the lens spacing (like you would with a Red Button viewer or similar).
The viewer was designed to use the Franka adapters (from Reel 3-D) to allow
both 41x101 mm (Realist) and 2x2x2 slides to be viewed. Superslides have the
same outside size as 2x2's and the Franka adapter opening is big enough to
allow them to be viewed.
The photo shows the viewer with a pair of 2x2's installed. Beside is the
Franka adapter for 41x101mm slides (holding a 5 perf slide). On the light panel are a pair of Superslides.

This photo shows the rear of the viewer. White plexiglass is used
as the diffuser. Both Franka adapters are shown in this photo (top
has 5 perf slide and bottom has vertical orientation 2x2 slides).
