WHAT IS FTP File Transfer
Protocol (FTP) is an application used to exchange files on the Internet.
FTP works on server/client principle. FTP server sotfware is installed on
remote host computer and all you need
to get connected to that FTP server is FTP client program on your computer.
That program helps you to download/upload files.
FTP CLIENT SOFTWARE Some Web browsers have that option, just type in Location(URL) field "ftp://ftp.xxxx.com/", instead "http://www.xxxx.com/", where "www.xxxx.com" is any khown FTP site. But web browser helps you a little. Big and awkward, they do only small part of what FTP clients can do. Use FTP client, it's more convenient. Many FTP clients available via Internet. FTP SERVER SOFTWARE Wanna make your server as FTP one, It helps you maintain your WWW server. Use that software.
TEST YOUR FTP CLIENT Well, you've got your FTP client program, now it's time to test it. Try to download some files from FTP sites down below or use web search engines to locate other ones.
TO LOCATE A FILE, USE ARCHIE SYSTEM Archie helps you find certain file or program and gives you list of FTP servers that have file or program you're looking for. It can be done by using Archie client, FTP search engines on the Web or order via Email. Some Archie servers:
ANANIMOUS FTP Many FTP sites extend the courtesy of public access through a unique sign-on convention, called "anonymous FTP". When using a public FTP site, type 'anonymous' at the name prompt and your email address at the password prompt. PRIVATE ACCOUNT If you have account on a server you want to connect to. Well, there you can download, upload, delete, rename files and directories (usually it's your own directory). REMEMBER THAT Number of users connected to FTP server is restricted. That's why sometimes it's hard to get connected or download files (especially in working hours). |
