Bonny Portmore
as arranged and performed by

Loreena McKennitt

Loreena

The first time we heard this melody is during Highlander III when Connor returns to his abandoned home in the Highlands and re-creates his dragon head Katana with the steel billet forged by Sorcerer Nakano. This is Loreena McKennitt's arrangement of the song, which seems to embody the Celtic spirit of times gone by. Loreena McKennitt is a popular, Juno award winning Canadian singer, her version of this song was released on her Album THE VISIT.

The Lyrics

BONNY PORTMORE
Music and lyrics traditional;
arranged and adapted by Loreena McKennitt
LOREENA McKENNITT: Vocals, Keyboards ANNE BOURNE: Cello
TOM HAZLETT: Bass, PATRICK HUTCHINSON: Uillean Pipes

O bonny Portmore, you shine where you stand
And the more I think on you the more I think long
If I had you now as I had once before
All the lords in Old England would not purchase Portmore.

O bonny Portmore, I am sorry to see
Such a woeful destruction of your ornament tree
For it stood on your shore for many's the long day
Till the long boats from Antrim came to float it away.

O bonny Portmore, you shine where you stand
And the more I think on you the more I think long
If I had you now as I had once before
All the Lords in Old England would not purchase Portmore.

All the birds in the forest they bitterly weep
Saying, "Where will we shelter or where will we sleep?"
For the Oak and the Ash, they are all cutten down
And the walls of bonny Portmore are all down to the ground.

O bonny Portmore, you shine where you stand
And the more I think on you the more I think long
If I had you now as I had once before
All the Lords of Old England would not purchase Portmore.

These are the lyrics as they appear in the liner notes for the CD THE VISIT. If you listen carefully, the song starts with the second verse on the CD itself.

The other *version* is the Roger Bellon arrangement sung by Laura Creamer
