1974 - 3 Year Old Female Horse Of The Year
Gone...But Not Forgotten. The magnificent filly Ruffian was the Name-like fulfillment of generations of planning and dreaming: a huge, mealy black three year old with rippling muscles and those rare champion eyes that seemed to know that she couldn't be beaten or even seriously challenged. Perhaps Ruffian was the greatest filly that ever lived. Certainly her tragically brief career was as perfect as any horse ever put together. From her first prancing step into the starting gate until the moment she injured her right foreleg at Belmont Park, she never allowed a rival to get in from of her for a single stride. Only one horse in the last two decades- Secretariat-excited the nonracing public as much as Ruffian did in her ten straight victories leading up to her match race with Foolish Pleasure.
Note:Blue equals male (stallion) Red equals female (mare)
