The battleship Missouri is anchored next to the Arizona Memorial. It is fitting that the two ships should be side by side. The sunken hulk of the USS Arizona (underneath the Memorial) represents the beginning of our involvement in the Second World War, and the USS Missouri, onboard which the Japanese signed the instrument of surrender in 1945, marks the ending of that conflict.
